Subject: A Vietnam Service Memorial in Myrtle Beach SC

Hope everyone is well & enjoying the Holiday Season. I recently shared this communication with J. Lleras that subsequently went to the local committee and I’m now hoping to hear how the VSPA would consider supporting the project. At this time we’ve been notified of the upcoming ground breaking ceremony scheduled for January 7th 2026 and hopefully know more about what I’m proposing to honor our SE Asia service with a wall plaque. Stay tuned as more info becomes available that I will share here.

To the Myrtle Beach Vietnam Memorial Committee,
I am writing as a member of the Vietnam Security Police Association (VSPA) on behalf of our Board of Directors. The VSPA represents the United States Air Force’s combat defense units that served in Vietnam and Thailand in Law Enforcement, Security, K-9, and Safeside roles. Throughout the conflict, no Air Force base or installation under our protection was ever overrun or captured—our enduring legacy of service and sacrifice.

Formed in 1997, the VSPA has grown from a small group of Air Police and Security Police veterans to more than a thousand members as a 501(c)(19) military association. At our 30th annual reunion in Tucson, Arizona, we dedicated a second KNIFE-13 Memorial at Luke AFB honoring the 18 Security Policemen and five aircrewmen lost during the Mayaguez rescue mission. This year marks the 50th anniversary of their sacrifice. More information about our history and memorials can be found at https://vspa.com.

At our recent business meeting, our organization discussed supporting the Myrtle Beach Vietnam Service Memorial through the funding of a plaque and/or other contribution. As Horry County residents and life members of VSPA, VVA, and DAV, Jaime Lleras and I will serve as points of contact.

We respectfully request guidance on the following:
• Will there be a formal application process for proposed plaque inscriptions or submitted text?
• What is the anticipated timeline for reviewing and approving engravings or plaques?
• Are there guidelines for submissions—including word limits, style/format, size, or material specifications?
• May interested parties address the project through public comments at upcoming Myrtle Beach City Council meetings, and if so, what is the procedure?

We appreciate the extraordinary effort underway to honor Vietnam veterans and would be grateful for any direction you can provide as we consider participating in this memorial.

Respectfully,
Hector Ramos
Vietnam Security Police Association (VSPA)
