Maybe this is the shipper in me talking, but I think the point of all that was that Scully is willing to simply "be there" for Mulder, even when she's not making any obvious contributions to the case. She knew that the case would be difficult for Mulder, as it was so similar to Samantha's abduction, and just wanted to provide the comfort of her presence.

I think Scully works very hard to *NEVER* criticize Mulder in front of other people. They have their differences, but they both seem to feel it is important to keep them private.

> And was Mulder being even more obtuse than normal?
Mulder was not thinking clearly due to the eerie parallels between this case and Samantha's disappearance. He admitted as much near the end, when he asked Skinner to remove him from the case.

I think it is further proof that Scully will do just about anything for Mulder. Performing an autopsy on someone you personally know has to be unpleasant, but she was willing to do it for him because he needed her to.

I know everybody seems to hate Mrs. Mulder, and I have to agree that she's not nearly as warm and loving as Scully's Mom. But I think we have to take a couple of things into consideration: 1.) Presuming that Tina Mulder truly had no idea exactly what happened to Samantha, she's lived under a horrible strain for over 25 years. I'm sure that can take its toll on a person. 2.) Many women in a similar situation — divorced, one of their children missing, no career of their own (at least, none that we've ever seen or heard of) - would "cling" to their only living child. Mrs. Mulder could have insisted that her son always stay close to her, marry and provide her with grandchildren to make up for the loss of Samantha, etc. I will give Mrs. Mulder credit for not standing in his way when he wanted to attend college in England, devote his life to his career, etc.
