Did you really hate Return to Me BDM? (I'm assuming you saw it and aren't just guessing it was bad ;-) ). I loved it. It was very well written, a funny, sweet story and DD did a very convincing job of not acting like Mulder.

People do have to work all year long and he does want to work more. Just not all year long as Fox Mulder. And I think anyone who was in the financial positon that would make them able to take a leave of absence from their job to spend more time with family would do so. Many people can't aford to do this but if they could and told thir friends they were going to cut back on work to spend more time with their new baby they would be commended for the repsonsiblity they showed rather than be chastised.

People also get to the point where they know that a particular job just isn't challenging enough for them anymore and they want to try something new. Seaven yeas is a good run and even ordinary people can wish to explore new options. He's not obligatd to us or anyone to stay on and on forever just because the fans want him too. If a factory worker got a better oportunity to move on do you think he should stay if a bunch of people said, "But we love the work you do in the factory! Please keep doing that for a few more years! You owe it to us!"

Originally the show was never supposed to stay in Vancouver. Only the pilot was to be filmed there and DD was told it would be shot in LA. So he spends 5 years up there on a botched agreement. I wouldn't call that being a prima donna at all.

Just my two cents ;-)
