It's deja vu all over again. Looks like like I'm going to have to have the "Difference between IN love and love" debate all over again. I don't think I was able to convince DRH of seeing things my way the last time we've debated this , and the end result will probably the same with you, but I'm still going to try, here goes...

Yes, Mulder protects and wants what's best for Scully because he loves her, but not because he's IN love with her. He feels these things for her, because he loves her as a freind and nothing more. I won't dispute that Mulder was once IN love with her, but that crush ended after "Triangle", when Scully had no reaction to his telling her that he loved her. It may have been the wrong way for him to interpret her reaction to his declaration, but the fact remains that he did take it that way. Ever since that time, Mulder has never tried to make their relationship evolve into anything more. He kind of fell out of being IN love after striking out in the XF Movie and in "Triangle" shortly after.

Mulder really does occupy all of Scully's time, but that's not his doing. It's Scully who's IN love with him, that hangs around him and makes sure that she spends all the time she can with him. If I were to ask you what Scully's hobbies were, what would you say? All I can come up with is that she likes to go jogging. If I were to ask the same about Mulder, I'm sure you could come up with alot more. The sad truth is that Dana really doesn't have much of a life outside of her job at the FBI. So even if she saw that she didn't get any sentimental feeback from Fox, she'd rather stay with him, because it's alot more interesting to hang out with him than to go back to her dreary life of jogging and fruity tofuty ice cream eating.

It's true that Scully's no dummy and that she's a strong woman who has self respect. She does feel respected and valued at her job, because of how important her input in Mulder's quest is. But since she's never told Mulder how she really feels about him, it's a good excuse as any to hide behind: "...I'm not IN love with Mulder, I just hang around because of how important my work is to him and his quest...", but we all know that that's just a small part of the reason she's still with him.

"...this is our quest Mulder." (man I hate it when she says that!), another classic excuse Dana hides behind to validate her wanting to hang around him. Proof of that is her reaction to the trust Mulder put in Fowley in "Two Fathers". Her usual jealous self, made her tell the LoneGunmen to run a background check on Diana and when she told Mulder about the discrepancies and he still said that he trusted her, Scully threatened to leave!!! If the quest was so important to her, why wouldn't she welcome the input of someone that could really help them? Granted, Fowley wasn't really trustworthy, but she could have went along just the same. Mulder never really trusted "X", but he still cautiously went along with him, because he saw that he could really help him, and because HIS quest IS that important to him.

It's nice that Scully always wants to know more facts than Mulder does, before jumping head first into a case, but we now know how useless that has been since most of the cases they've worked on have been left "unexplained" (by her standards anyway). It has saved their lives in the past, but lately, her scientific approach to things has only slowed down Mulder's progress and really hasn't helped much.

A man IN love does want to give his love all that she needs and wants, but when he can't, the wisest thing for him to do is to follow that old saying: "If you love something, let it go", and that's what Mulder did. We don't need to hear him say that he doesn't want to have kids and settle down someday to understand that right now he doesn't feel he can give Scully that until he's finished with HIS quest.

I know you'd like it if the child was Mulder's, but I'm 98.9% sure it isn't. CC's just yanking our chain IMO and I'm not buying it.

Sorry to have rambled on for so long kenamom, but I just wanted to make sure you didn't fall in any of those nasty craters you keep finding. ;-)
