Subject: Hi! Remember me? Want to talk about GA's ep? Huh, do you, do you, do you?

Hi Everyone! Sorry I've been away for so long. Melody could take some lessons from me. If the people on the forum offend you, just disappear for three or four weeks at a time and don't say anything about it. :-) :-) Just joking. My absence wasn't planned. There was a death in the family and some other stuff too, but I don't want to talk about that. You guys are my escape from reality. I did come here before, but Hanson scared me away. I don't want to talk about that either. What I would like to talk about is GA’s ep, All Things. I actually started this post a week ago, but didn’t have time to finish it until now.

Like SMH, I absolutely loved DD's ep last year and was really hoping that GA's ep would knock me out too. It didn't. I was afraid I would have to sign off as The Lone Dissenter, but I’m glad there were other people who weren’t gaga over the ep. (I did get to read a few posts.) There were some really interesting questions to chew as a result of All Things, but the episode itself wasn't that great, IMHO.

I agree with everyone who said the slow-motion was overdone. At one point I wondered if GA had written a 30-minute script and just really, really needed to slow it down. The slo-mo was absolutely beautiful in Rush, but in All Things, it seemed forced. A little is sophisticated, but you can't depend on a camera technique to tie the episode together. On that train of thought, it would have been hard to keep the story connected if it weren’t for the ever-present slo-mo. Not a strong enough connection.

I didn’t think the plot was that great. “Fate” reconnects Scully with a lover from her past and, in the process, with the road not taken. I never felt that there was any believable danger that Scully would choose her life with Daniel over the life she has now. Maybe the point wasn’t to make her aware of all the choices available to her in the past, but to make her aware of all the possibilities for the present. Okay, I could buy that. I realize this was supposed to be a “Scully-introspective,” but what, exactly, made this X-filey? Just because Scully was in it? The most important thing I “learned” about Scully as a result of this episode is that she’s not very nice, and she’s certainly not the saint we once thought she was. It was a cool move for GA to show some less than savory aspects of her character, but for me, All Things didn’t add any more depth to Scully.

Another thing I disliked about All Things was Carol (was that the ex-physicist’s name or her partner’s? It’s the only one I remember.). I didn’t find her believable at all. I know that a theme in the episode was that “everything is connected,” but it was too huge of a coincidence for me to Scully to meet up with Miss Redhead, I used to be a scientist who followed everything by the book, and I also had cancer, and I also was in a relationship that I felt I had to conceal, but now I’m happy with my career that deals with the paranormal, and Look! we have matching charm bracelets too! GA was certainly not concerned with subtlety.

But my biggest peeve is the fact that there are so many episodes where all Scully does is play Mulder’s straight man and so few episodes that show depth to her character (or at least give her interesting lines!) Are we supposed to be happy to get a few Scully-intense episodes IN PLACE OF having her well-represented in normal ones?

Okay, the good stuff- I did LOVE the vision Scully had while she was in the temple- the gold framed images of people in her life flying through her head, finished with a transparent Daniel begging her to “speak to me.” That was absolutely beautiful and spooky, a wonderful combination for The X-Files.

Another plus: I’m really glad this episode didn’t turn out to be “How Fox Mulder Changed My Life” or “Daniel vs. Mulder.” Although, for the record, if it was necessary, Mulder could have kicked Daniel’s ass.

Am I the only one who thought that the blonde woman Scully kept on seeing was smiling a bit... flirtatiously? Up until the point the woman turned out to be Mulder, I was wondering if Scully’s sexual preferences were in question. Was the lesbian couple put in the story to suggest yet another way Scully’s been repressing herself? Even though the “girl” turned out to be Mulder, it still could have worked-- S: Shoot, Mulder! I thought you were a girl!
Heh-heh. That’ll build his confidence.

All Things did raise some interesting questions. In the beginning, Scully asks Mulder how the crop circle phenomenon is even remotely FBI related. We’ve wondered before where all of Mulder’s money goes. Porn and medical insurance can’t account for all of it. I think that some of his money certainly does go into pursuing his own bizarre interests. What do you guys think? And, equally importantly, does he also pay for Scully to go along with him? Is she aware of this? Would/Does she still allow him to pay if she was/is aware? (Does Mulder, the gentleman (as someone called him,) pay for two rooms on these little excursions? Whee! Jumping to conclusions is fun!

Speaking of which, you guys have probably hashed and rehashed the Did They or Didn’t They issue, but I’ll plunk my two cents in too anyway. I can the situation where Mulder and Scully did sleep together. I can see the situation where Scully stayed on the couch all night, washed up and went home, leaving Mulder untouched in bed. However, I can’t see an in-between situation. If there wasn’t any sex, IMO, Scully was not in that bed. I really hope that they didn’t sleep together, if only because it really hurts my feelings that Scully would leave the next morning. :-( :-( But maybe she was being nice for a change and going out to buy breakfast for Mulder. Or maybe, after she slept with Mulder, she decided to go back to Daniel after all. Aaaugh! IF they did sleep together, I applaud the subtlety- no mushy love scenes, no overly sentimental declarations- if this is msr, keep it this way (I would say “minus the ambiguity,” but what good would that do me?). But what *really* happened? I think Mulder simply wanted to make good on his “I’m not wearing any pants” comment and Scully finally gave that comment the attention it deserved.

Personally, what would have been much sexier would have been a slow pan of Mulder sleeping, fully clothed... on his couch.

Glad to be back,
hairytoes, who still loves GA but is afraid Scully will leave her for a salad

P.S. No, I didn’t watch Brand-X on Sunday. It’s the first episode I’ve missed this season! (For some reason I had a dream that I did watch the episode and that a computer-animated Jim Henson was in it. I don’t want to know the details of the plot, but that WAS just a dream, wasn’t it? Though I do love Jim Henson and his wonderful creations.)
