I've been reading some of the stuff that suggests a shake-up too, and I dunno how it's going to go down. If you look at the casts through the years, they've mostly come and gone in large groups, with awkward transition periods. 1990 saw the first time new players were phased in, but the group that was replacing Carvey/Hooks/Hartman still came to the show in one big lump. In the span of two years: Farley, Rock, Sweeney, Cleghorne, Hutsell, Meadows, Sandler, Schneider, and Spade all joined the cast, along with quickly departed Fallon and Cahill. Just two years. In contrast, the current cast has really dribbled in, with Fallon, Parnell, Sanz one year, Dratch the next, Rudolph, Fey and Minor, then Poehler, Meyers, Richards and Edwards... This seems to have made it even harder for the current cast to establish itself as a single cast.

So if there's a shake-up, how abrupt is it going to be? I expect only a little worse than 99-00 to 00-01. We'll see some big departures, but nothing too extravagant. Most notably, I think there's no way NBC is letting Meyers hit the road. The only he people offends are those who like offensive humor, and he has really shown a much stronger Kerry in the past few weeks. Elsewise, I could see what you have coming to pass.

While dismissing Parnell again may seem cruel, I agree that he still has a fine acting career ahead of him. I'll always wonder what he would have been like if he was in a smaller comedy troupe with a bit more give-and-take. One where everyone gets the spotlight at some point, but everybody also plays strong support. He's probably too well known for that to happen now, though.

Just one point of clarification, well, furtherification, on what I said before about Fallon. I said he's not a character actor. This is not to say I don't think he could do well as a star of feature films. He did the shooting for Taxi recently, and hopefully he'll be taken a few more lead movie roles. This may sound odd, but I think it'd be interesting to see what happens to WU if he was gone for a week or two shooting a movie, like Ferrell in a few of the 01-02 episodes. Also, doing films would hopefully can this music thing that he's proving to be quite terrible at.

As for who comes in? Some people are saying this Liz Cachowski well be a featured player, some are saying just a writer... we'll know well enough on Saturday as I believe she starts this week. I've seen a few testimonials from people who saw her at Second City saying she's quite good, doubt we'll get to see in her first episode. I'm not going to speculate too much on other future cast members as I just don't know these sorts of things, but I will say that from the "former Nickelodeon stars" pool I would have pulled Michael C. Maronna, the elder Pete, before Kenan. Uh, so I guess maybe choose a number? NBC likes to stack em huge, and thinking realistically, I'll say 11 or 12. Including a dedicated Weekend Updater, who only shows up elsewhere on rare occasions.
