Subject: Stay cool in the summer heat with this Stephen Colbert inspired review.
In reply to: Patrick Lonergan 's message, "REVIEWS: Stephen Colbert 06/10/06" on 22:12:11 06/10/06 Sat

I had some time off so I thought I would review. Pretty decent show, now if SNL will actually book Colbert as a host then we can have some fun. Now onto the review.

Tony Awards: I didn’t watch the Tony Awards. Was this an actual pairing... Martin Short and Hicks? Because really, I see no need to make fun of Soul-Man anymore. Honestly, I never found Jason’s impression that funny. Hearing someone shout Soul Patrol for 1000th time doesn’t work in my book.. Martin Short throwing in his Ed Grimley character. Plus, I would have had Martin Short cameo because I don’t see Andy playing him.

Monologue: As I said before Jim, it was alright. A little long but still a solid monologue.

Captain Lipstick: This was pretty good, the jab at super-hero movie remakes was a nice touch. Throwing Bill Hader in was a nice gag. Lipstick’s comments were not necessary and I would have just made it a complete narration trailer with a title screen at the end. But still solid nonetheless.

Ned and the Doctor: If anyone could pull this off it would be Colbert. It was an interesting idea, but I think the execution was bit off. I don’t know why, but it just came off a bit forced. The coffee bit was predictable and uh... I haven’t seen the first episode of Strangers with Candy so I was lost on that visual. I’ve only caught random segments of the show on the internet, because Comedy Central never seems to re-air episodes anymore. Really, I just can’t believe how many damn times they can repeat South Park, Mind of Mencia and MADtv.

Now Hiring-Meteorologist: The Hurricane Hilarity continues! Pat, hurricanes obviously inspire some of your craziest sketches. With Stephen Colbert as a looney weatherman the possibilities are endless. I wouldn’t mind seeing him actually deliver some forecasts in that manic demanor. The gender bit in the beginning of the interview was hilarious. And of course Parker trying to conjure up a hurricane was excellent. I’m glad you didn’t go with the predictable ending of a hurricane hitting and went with “golden showers” line.

SNY Digital Short: Jason, you must have Lonely Island in your blood because this everything that the Digital Shorts represent, and you carried it out even better. Very descriptive sketch and it was actually easy to visualize with the constant one-upping. The absurdity just kept building up and of course the single line of dialogue was a great way to close out the sketch. Nice Job.

WU: Jokes were definitely stronger this time around.. Stephen Colbert would definitely be proud of us. Finesse’s commentary was a bit soft in my opinion. I would have been more brutal. I’m all for black hockey players, hell they gave the NBA MVP to a white guy might as well balance out the race card with NHL’s newest rising star! Anyways the Nicholas mea thing fell flat and my favorite jokes were the cheese-steak joke and the crossed fingers joke.

Nancy Drew: Never read Nancy Drew or Hardy boys. Overall this piece seemed a little bland and corny at times. But I think that might have been the point, trying to expose the corniness of the series. I did laugh at the parts about Nancy reading other peoples mail and the interrogation with Spencer. But the rest was kinda flat in my opinion, but still I applaud your effort for writing something different, you won’t find Nancy Drew sketches anywhere else.

Dr. Phil: Sorry Mark, but Dr. Phil’s crazy impression just doesn’t appeal to me. Jesus vs. his dad(God) jokes have been done before. Plus the whole “game-show” angle with God fell flat. Though, I would like to see Colbert dressed as Jesus; the prophet and a man of Latino descent.

The Basement: Not bad. I would have done less flashbacks because some of the smaller ones fell flat. The others were alright. My favorite was the 1970 one; disco will die... no it won’t. I am a sucker for crazy costumes, especially outdated disco suits. But the ending was a letdown in my opinion.

With that comes the end of our first episode. I see great things for the rest of the episodes and we’ve got a good host lineup this summer including Hank Azaria, Michael Ian Black, Zach Braff and the legendary Dustin Hoffman. Well that’s all for me, and that’s it for the rest of the month I guess. For July 1st comes Amy Sedaris.
