>Motel Lobby: ...I don't mean to be presumptiuous Patrick, but am I right in guessing this was inspired by your lodging experiences during your trip last week?

How muy presumptiuously correct of you, Jim! The general premise also got me thinking back on two older SNL sketches: Hardware Store Gigolo with Bronson Pinchot, and Frequent Flyer with Bill Murray, only I went the opposite way with my character to make him annoying and not the least bit helpful. I did get down to the motel lobby a little late one morning, and they did run out of coffee a half-hour before the cutoff time. The only difference is that I walked over to a nearby coffee shop to fulfill my addiction. I did have to explain to my wife about 3-4 days in a row that coffee was only available in the lobby until 11am, though, on some days, there was leftover by the time we passed through in the afternoon or early evening. There was no continental breakfast, though the manager did bring out packets of oatmeal, hot chocolate and granola bars around 9:30 each morning. I suspect the majority of the guests were not business travelers, because there was never anyone else in there by that time. Even I already had a snack at the room, so we'd take a stash to go in preparaton of the next morning. In fact, the only time the lobby was crowded in the morning was on the weekend, when everyone was crowded around in conversation.

I had the general idea of Steve Martin hanging out at a motel lobby, I just didn't know where to expand the idea until I came up with the line about trying to get a free night's stay for dropping his pants, then more or less wrote the rest in reverse to build to that outlandish conclusion.

I didn't see anybody like this on my recent trip, but let me go ahead and mention who had the room next to us when we went to Sonoma County last summer. We think the woman might have been a hooker. And not the attractive, thin kind, either - the kind who was so bloated and unattractive that even if she paid YOU, you'd still say No Dice. All we know is, when we left the motel to drive up to Bodega Bay at 5pm, this heavyset woman was leaving her room with some squirrelly pencilneck geek. When we returned around 11pm that night, she was walking back to the room with some kind of biker dude who'd just pulled up in a cab. And by the time we checked out the next morning, we noticed a third guy coming out of the next room with her.
