Subject: This is my 14th SNY review... ok I lied. But light the torch anyways!
In reply to: Patrick Lonergan 's message, "REVIEWS: Steve Martin 02/04/06" on 11:34:44 02/04/06 Sat

Who needs the Olympics, history is in the making here. STEVE MARTIN IS HOSTING... WOW! Anyways it was a submission filled episode and I’m quite happy. Now here are the reviews and not a moment too soon.

State of the Union: I’m gonna be honest. When you have the epic Steve Martin hosting SNY for the first time, you should try to use him in the CO, and make him say the phrase. That really brought down the piece. Anyways what we get are pop-culture references that have been done to death on this site and everywhere else. Comparing Napoleon Dynamite to Osama, while that is random it’s just way too forced for a state of the union sketch.

Monologue: Not bad, I was thinking about why Steve didn’t host for awhile. Could have been a funnier reason as to why he hasn’t hosted. The Prince on roller-coaster part was a chuckler, but for the most part it just came off a bit forced. But still, it's tough to do a one-man monologue so I award you on good effort.

Dr. Phil Parts 1-3: Here’s the thing... the Dr.Phil gag never appealed to me. OOH let’s make Dr.Phil a raving Texas lunatic. I was sick of it from when the first Dr.Phil parodies were done. But I did read your piece for the Sarsgaard ep Mark, and given that you were under a time limit I applaud you. But honestly, these 3 segments were just flat. Sorry Mark, but you’ve had better.

Diamond Dump: Pretty good work. Some of the lines were hilarious especially that part where Bijou explains his family's history. Stuffing the corpse full of jewels, wow I want to see that on network tv! For the most part it's good stuff, the only thing is that it took awhile for it to pick up steam, I would have cut down with the intro. It was a bit wordy and that kind of slows down the piece. But still good overall, a little tightening up is all it needs.

Health Talk: Ah, this little ditty, some in the SNL realm say that it's formula has been used in the Butt Cancer and Firmium commercial, and I say yes, but with less side effects. Seriously, it's alright, not bad. The euphimisms definitely were quite absurd, and it started to run out of steam, but the callers definitely added some pizazz, and of course the ending with the fines and lawsuits that definitely summed it up. I don't know about anyone else but I really want to actually here Steve Martin say whirligigging the fishy mustache one day. He could be selling time-share and if he says that I might buy some, I just might.

Sexy Teacher: There should have been some mood music or something as an extra bonus. It's a pretty sub-par idea, teacher being a pervert. But actually I ended up laughing more than expected. The descriptions defintely helped and the fact that it was in detention was a nice touch. And that one slutty girl was a great insert, Of course the ending couldn't be better, nice twist man. Solid work, and this proves my theory that even a sub-par idea can take off with great delivery and details.

WU: I will do a joke by joke review one day, but not today. The jokes were mostly misses. Sorry, but we get a lot of stale bits. Why must we continue with Donald Trump jokes, I find no use for them. And I'm not being arrogant, but when you've beaten a gag beyond death, it's just useless. And I get it, Britney spears is evil, TomKat is evil, and reality tv is evil! Now that everyone knows, please stop the jokes. And quite frankly the 2 commentaries were filled with so many stale pop-culture references that it was hard to laugh. Really, how many times can we make fun of Laguna Beach! The angry overtones and swearing didn’t add anything, sorry but those were both a miss. Now... I always have a few jokes of the week and there were some gems. The Wing bowl joke, and the subway joke and the Fred savage joke were the only decent ones. I do want to add that I plan on submitting to WU more and apologize for lack of Update material so far.

Motel Lobby: Gripes about Traveling, I can relate Pat. Chronologically, we should have had the flight sketch first. And then the hotel one. Steve was more smug in my sketch and that's kind of how I pictured him. In this sketch, he's bit more outlandish and out there. That was kind of a good take, we get the smug and wild and crazy side of Steve. Anyways definitely solid work. The different conversation topics were great and of course the running out of coffee gag was hilarious. The ending was just right, with the twist at the end and Bill Hader definitely suited his role.

Super Bowl XL: Parnell as the crazy statistic man, heh that was definitely worth a good laugh. But the ending, getting shot yup that’s what happens in the Detroit. It was a bit slow in the middle, but the crazy teleprompter also beefed up the gag. Though Horatio as John Madden, ugh! I would have brought Frank Caliendo from MADtv for a special appearance as John Madden I may hate Madtv, but Frank has some killer impressions.

Eulogy: Awkwardness at a funeral, yup Steve was a great man for the piece. The metaphor for driving and then the twist that the guy died from driving, heh wow, great stuff. The tv themes was an interesting gag, I loved the twist that the mourner was actually the producer for 3's Company. I definitely would love to see this sketch played out. SNL's funeral sketches do not pack as powerful a punch as ours do, so I would really would love to see one of these played out, this one especially.

MFL: Midgets playing football, the team names were a hoot. Wow... no one says a real hoot-in-nany anymore. Another phrase for Tweeterson. I found the Steve Martin endorsement idea kind of nice. I would have played with that a bit more. It was alright, but there could have been way more development.

Ok... so we cut the MFL sketch and now we get... Gay Osama, BAD IDEA. I love jabs at Osama, but making him gay, that's really not going to work. SNL even in their gay bashing season last year did not attempt this because they knew it would fail. What we have here is so many gay cliches it is just sad. I'm sorry but this was a miss. And the terror speech at the end was not comedy it was a column from US Weekly.

Normandy 1944: Heh, reminds me of that WW2 sketch from Phil Hartman’s hosting stint; Johnson, you’re not coming back! Trying to remember the dwarves names, I thought it was going nowhere, but the end result was hilarious. Oh man, Sleepy, er, snory, wow the art of war! They were just going insane over that task and it made for a good piece. And of course the ending made it just as good, really sealed the deal and perfect build-up.

You Finish?: The crazy waiter gag is getting old. It would have to be uber-creative to be hilarious. What we get is a so-so piece. The ending should have much more developed. I was expecting it to take off, but it didn't. And Jim's suggestion was definitely good, with the bathroom bit. Crafting is definitely the key here.

Really, I apologize if I was harsh, but harsh reviews will help us, and I applaud Jim for really being honest in his reviews as well, because that is only way to improve. The end result was still a decent show. When you look at SNL and compare it to SNY, the winner by a smidge is SNY. Our ideas are definitely much more fufilling, and more creative than SNL's we just need to tweak our sketches. Well that's all for now, take it easy everyone.
