Subject: I am Zim! I will destroy you! But first... I'll review the show.
In reply to: Mark walsh 's message, "Re: REVIEWS: Tom Hanks 05/06/06" on 00:40:02 05/07/06 Sun

Sorry about the odd intro. I just recently discovered "Invader Zim", and found it to be comedic gold. Pity I never got the chance to see it when it was on the air. Would there happen to be any other fans of the show here?

Now, before I get to the review, two matters I must bring up. First, I'm sorry I was unable to get a sketch in for the show. Finals kept me busy and I had trouble tying together some pieces, but I should have it ready for the next show. SEcondly, and more importantly... my brother got accepted to Harvard! He got a huge grant too. Everyone in the family's proud, and I wanted to brag on his behalf.

Finally, after much delay, the review... I said, "the review". GIR, bring me the review now! (had to throw in another Zim reference, couldn't resist.)

Hardball: I'm sad to say, this was about on par with the "Hardball" sketches we've seen on WU as of late. The Matthews and Buchannan personas have been done before, Tony Snow's lines weren't that funny, and Zell Miller was unnecessary and added nothing to the piece.

Monologue: A so-so piece. I just didn't find it that funny, probably because it was overly meta-referencial. There were some good lines, however, ("I host because I want to, not because I need to.)

Dr. Phil Promos 1-3: These were incredibly short, and not that good. It was basically the same "Dr. Phil's annoying" joke rewritten for each piece. Sorry, but these were unnecessary in my opinion.

Yield: I thought it was great, and I've never heard of Ronnie James Dio. This sketch relied on a variation of the same joke for each punchline, and was carried out successfully by making each successive alteration more outlandish than the previous one. Plus, there were some great one liners (the mother duck's a whore, "How many tumbleweeds are in suburban Chicago?", ect). Nicely done.

Bad News Bailey: Much like "Yield", this piece also managed to do a great job by taking the same joke to insane heights. You've got to feel bad for Bailey, a simple misunderstanding ostracizes him from his friends and co-workers. Plenty of absurd situations abound, a nice twist at the ending when you think he's finally abreast of the bad news, and a sly reference to Mr. Short Term Memory. Loved it.

WU: I'll cover this in a successive review. Time to take the pressure off of Prateek (thanks again for all the reviews you've done in the past.)

Short People: I didn't think it was that impressive. It was pretty predictable and the dialogue wasn't that funny. I did enjoy the Antman character, but that was pretty much the only thing I liked about the piece.

NBC Special Report: Didn't like this at all. Mark, I know you don't like the presidential administration, but it's not something you have to bring up every week. That just makes it cliche. And I didn't find this sketch funny at all. The slams at Cheney and the administration have been done to death, the dialogue wasn't funny, there were unnecessary pop culture references, and the sketch broke for no good reason. It was just totally disjointed.

The Adventures of Fatman and Blobin: A rather predictable piece. I think "Fatman and Blobin" jokes have been done on and off since the 60s show, there was nothing new or original to this.
