Subject: I'm reviewing Steve's show again?
In reply to: Patrick Lonergan 's message, "REVIEWS: Steve Carell 10/01/05" on 19:26:55 10/03/05 Mon

Let's go with the first review for the premire of our new season.

George W. Bush: Evil Genius at Large - okay, I'm going to be blunt, and forgive me if I seem harsh, but this was totally inappropriate. Criticizing the President and the federal government for their delayed response to the Katrina disaster is one thing (I was even critical of how long it took them to act), but trying to imply that they were responsible for the devastation of Katrina, even if it was intended to be humorous (which failed here) is just wrong. Really, would you show a sketch that said Israel was responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center? I'm sorry, Pat & Mark, I expected better from you two.

Monologue: Just like his first with Lewis Black, Justin's second monologue scores big. The entire argument between Carrell and Colbert was hilarious; I loved the "Steve/Steven" confusion, Colbert's twisted metaphors, and the blood oath flashback were great. Extra points for the bit where Colbert berates the director for taking so long to bring the camera to his face. You have got talent for writing monologues for Daily Show correspondents, Justin.

Let MTV VMA Up Your Life: Killer bit, Prateek. A nice satirical attack on how MTV has whored itself into mediocrity. The VMA Producer's disgusted soliloquies are hilarious, especially when he finally realizes he's on camera. Admittedly, you did go a little overboard on the swearing and scatology at some points (i.e. Orlando Bloom talking about cumming), and I didn't find the Ludacris bit as funny as the other two, but overall it was still quite good, and to think I was getting sick of celebrity and TV parodies.

... Or Else: It had a great premise, and wonderful lines, but it ran a little too short for my liking. You could have included some more bits about how to effectively use "... Or Else" in varying situations, and not stopped after the part where it showed how to deal with rambunctious children Still, this was quite good. It gives me an idea for my own ad-parody to modify behavior: The Shokakrotch 5000.

Songs of the Pedophile: Sorry Mark, but just posting song lyrics that imply pedophilia isn't comedy.

Band Aid: The band members in this sketch were hilarious; I loved their inability to remember what really happened to the previous guitar player, and Skag's repetitive confessions about sleeping with the women in Dak's life. Plus the "Other NRA" slogan was quite nice. It fell rather short at the end, though - you'd established Andrew as a straight-laced guy who's no longer a badass and no longer as accomplished on the guitar (even though he's "better than the last guy"), but the montage at the end doesn't really provide any comedic closure. Maybe you could have ended it after he went on stage, and mentioned that a distorted version of a song they were doing was heard from off-screen. Just my opinion, though.

Domino's Pizza: Another clever ad parody that effectively works current events into it. The Domino's guy had great lines. My only complaint is that this sketch, like "Or Else" was too short for my liking. Regardless of length, though, this was great.

Well, that's my review. In all, I'd say we had a typical season premire: a few good sketches, a few not so good sketches. That's to be expected, it'll take a while to get into the groove of the new season. I can't wait to see what's in store for the rest of the year. Bye, all.

PS: Patrick and Mark, if you read this, know that my criticisms of your CO were not intended to be personal.
