Subject: The (usually) Lone Reviewer strikes again
In reply to: JP 's message, "I will quickie review!" on 02:38:44 11/21/05 Mon

Hopefully this week I won't be the only one to lend a review. Let's go!

Reluctant Lorne - this was a rather lackluster sketch. The dialogue was flat, all the jabs at the show were somewhat juvenile and lacked creativity, and it didn't really go anywhere in the end. It could have been better.

Monologue - too many weak one-liners and poor character personas, plus an overabundance of celebrity jabs brought this piece down.

Jake Something and the Hippies - I wasn't too partial to this character in his first outing... and I'm still not. The dialogue was just too disjointed and not very funny. I'm sorry, but "Jake Something" is not a good character. He brings nothing to the party. The hippies weren't too great either, their lines were weak as well.

Totally Awesome Tires - the "Tatas" acronym was a little crude, but carried out well for the sketch. It was quite nice; I loved the ever-increasingly hilarious disclaimers and learning about what went into the tires. The ending was kind of weak, but overall a great piece.

A Message From God - First off, I hate Howard STern, I don't even like to see him parodied, so that brought my opinion of the sketch down. Secondly, Stern wasn't funny at all - he was just being loud, vulgar and arrogant. A jab at Pat Robertson would have been good if it had been clever, but it was handled in a rather childish manner. Word of advice: being loud and angry isn't the same as being comedic.

SNL Season 31 - This was a rather so-so sketch. It had some good slams at the show's lackluster performance so far this season, and rather clever portrayals of the cast and crew, but for some reason this didn't really fly with me. The Scientology slam could have been a little more inspired, though.

The Markie Post Show - I have no idea who Markie Post is, so that kept me from having any prejudged opinions on the sketch. Regardless, I still didn't like it. The washed-up celebrity jokes, I say again, are LAME. Quoting song lyrics - lame. Parodying old sitcoms - lame. In case you haven't guessed, I had a low opinion of this piece.

Well, that's it for another, and perhaps my harshest review of the season. I hope this won't cause any bad blood, I'm simply voicing my thoughs on what I found funny and what I didn't. I don't want anyone to be mad at me... please...

Love to stay and chat, but I've got a steak in the oven and I need to take it out before it freezes. That, and I have some work to do if I want to get my two bits in for Dane Cook's episode. Catch you all later.
