I'd like to second many of the points you made in reviewing the jokes, Jim. I, too, am tired of the "Bush is dumb" jokes, as there's simply no originality in this punchline. The same goes for the majority of the jokes about celebrities, especially if the punchline is nothing more than the celebrity quoting one of their movie lines when "asked to comment." We had 20 jokes and 3 commentaries in our last WU, which isn't a bad total overall, but I'd rather see more time put into jokes about the news so that they're funny more than they are plentiful. We have a pretty consistent contribution pool in the "SNY Writing Crew", and I think the piece can be improved in a major way if each contributor committed themselves to their best 5 jokes each week, which would focus the piece on the comedy instead of the quantity. The goal is to put together a version of WU that is funnier than what we get to see on television, not one that settles on providing the same tired punchlines. Use Thursday night chat to get reaction from the week's jokes to help narrow it down to your best 5. Come on, surely all of us together are funnier than "a couple of girls"!
