Weekend Update Joke Review (in order of appearance):

1st Bush Joke: Could be less wordy, but funny. A simple Photoshop pic of Bush in one of those helmets would have been preferable to explaining what the helmet was for in the punch line. Hell, what am I saying, I don’t even know how to use Photoshop.

2nd Bush Joke: Nice joke…although still a little wordy. I’d find a way to combine the first two sentences.

1st Star Wars Joke: Aren’t Jar Jar Binks jokes a little old? I see this playing well with the current SNL audience, though…which is kind of a backhanded compliment in some ways. The good you could take from this is that I picture this being an actual joke said on WU.

2nd Star Wars Joke: If Jar Jar jokes are old, Hamill jokes are fossils. You have to be ultra-clever to pull off another one of these.

Prison Joke: Funny stuff! Nice use of “crazy bread” instead of simply saying “breadsticks”.

Arnold Joke: I like this…especially when I imagine Tina trying to do it. Could’ve been a little more clever or surprising, though.

1st Army Base Joke: I’d compartmentalize this joke into two short sentences, because it’s very good, just seemingly wordy. Who needs to know that 33 are major bases? You could leave out the phrase “it’s been promised that” in the punch.

2nd Army Base Joke: Snappy, funny, clever, and a great use of current pop culture!

German Homeless: Nice joke! The use of “nuggets” here was priceless!

1st Microsoft Joke: There have been too many jokes like this, where a group of people who play games, or like Star Wars, or read fantasy books, etc. have been dogged. Like with the Jar Jar and Hamill jokes, you have to be ultra-clever and fresh to pull these off.

2nd Microsoft Joke: Okay, we get it, Gates is rich!! I refer to the last criticism…be fresh and ultra-clever, because we’ve seen these over and over.

Zelwegger & Chesney: Nice joke, and excellent commentary on our current news coverage!

Koppel Commentary: Imagining Hammond doing this certainly makes it funnier, but overall, I’d have been a little more creative with the messages he read on-air. Leave in blank spaces for the words she said that were so bad he had to clean them up, and use context clues to make it obvious what she might have said. Not bad, though.

3rd Bush Joke: Funny stuff! Gotta love a Mr. Rogers reference!

Instanbul Joke: Nanny 911 was the best you could muster? There’s plenty of totally terrible shows out there…Nanny 911’s just terrible.

Chappelle Joke: For whatever reason, I didn’t find this that funny. I don’t exactly know why, it just wasn’t.

Rick James Campaign: Nice material, and a good idea for the punch…it’s just too wordy and not well-executed, especially with regards to the punch line. Poehler’s rejoinder was useless.

2,000-yr.-old Shoe: Nice jab at Streisand!

Chris Tucker: Not very funny or clever. Where’s Chris Tucker these days, anyway?

Health News: Kinda obvious…only funny if Nealon gets to deliver it.

Cosby: Not very funny or clever…unless you had Photoshopped a silly-looking photo of Cosby and the title “Kids Don’t Know Anything” in funny font scrawled under him.

Lopez: She has a big ass…we know.
