In reply to: Patrick Lonergan 's message, "REVIEWS: Luke Wilson 11/20/04" on 11:42:42 11/20/04 Sat

I had some time so why not review. I’d like to congratulate SNY on reaching it’s 100th episode. Real or fake, there is a lot of great comedy here. This site has become not just a creative outlet, but a place where fans of the show or comedy in general can chat and write and aspire for a future.

I couldn’t think of a title for the review. This episode has so many titles. “SNY 100", or
“Luke Wilson: The Real Deal”, or “U2 Live featuring that guy from Alex and Emma”. The best title has to be “That SNY episode that comes before Thanksgiving so it better not suck!”
Let’s start reviewing.

Lorne’s Message: It’s great that we mentioned SNY 100! Lorne appears annoyed with the success of SNY, and who would have thought, Luke Wilson says the phrase. Come on, if anything all of the writers should have appearing in one big conga line and announced together. Or better yet Pat you alone could have said the phrase. Other than that. A well developed idea and the best way to honor and lampoon the 100 episodes of SNY.

Monologue: Pretty much like other classic monologues where less famous peeps try to upstage the host. For example Alex Winter upstaging Keanu Reeves. You guys were able to tackle all of Owen Wilson’s faults and go after the recent influx of British hosts. Nice job having Luke punch him in the nose!

Saber Advanced: A nice spoof of those commercials. It was short and sweet and to the point. There were no flaws however I would have added a disclaimer with some crazy side-effects. That would have been nice ending for the commercial.

Anita + Hero: Image consultant with super-heroes. I actually found this pretty good. The side-kick not having actual powers was my favorite part. It was well detailed, which made it easier to picture. Nice job.

Celebrity Poker: I liked the lampooning of the celebs. However the commentary was okay. I really don’t know who Phil Gordon is. If he is just a Poker Commentator then the commentary between him and oddball Foley was great. But if he is also a celeb, then he should have been lampooned. I would have also had Nicholas Cage plug his movies in amidst all this Poker. I really found Joe Rogan the funniest part in the whole sketch.

WU: I wrote Tina’s rant about Has-Been Stars, and the Jerry Seinfeld joke and the Pee Wee Herman Joke so I won’t comment on them. There were a couple good jokes like the Spongebob Movie joke, and the activists joke. That makes 2 Seinfeld references in the WU. The Chris Parnell commentary was okay. It wasn’t insanely funny, but still funny. The Jingle All the Way plug was a nice touch. I think the commentary fell short. A rant is more of a longer diss while this was more of an attempt to convince execs to consider him. It was a pretty good WU other-wise.

Radford James: Nice twist at the end. I like how you write simple sketches. That is key for sketch comedy. In my case, I could improve on my set-ups. Yours have a distinction that makes them not too flashy but still humorous. The bar man’s dialogue was a great addition.

Ray and Belle Rob a Bank: Not bad! There was some great dialogue from the couple. The whole boob job thing was funny in the beginning, but became repetitive. Overall, I enjoyed the concept of the game-show questions pertaining to the robbers. It was a sketch that was different, and that is something to look at. It may not provide a super punch, but I think that sometimes the clever concept what helps a sketch as well.

Late Late Show Auditions-Part 2: I enjoyed part 2 better than part one. There was a bit more distinction between the characters. The appearances of Jimmy Fallon and Jon Lovitz were great. Of course the Walken cameo couldn’t have been at a better time. A pretty solid sketch.

Advanced Copy: I won’t review my sketch. But I do have to say a couple things about it. This was originally written for the Matt Leblanc Summer Episode. Where Willy James tries to sneak into the SP2 premiere, and gets in only after showing Sam Raimi, the alternate ending of Spider-Man 1. But I still wanted to do the concept, so I waited until sometime close to when the DVD was going to come out and rewrote it. Willy James was originally Will Forte, but then obviously he was the one who had to play Raimi. So, I wasn’t sure who to cast as Willy James, therefore I wrote “The Writer” as the person playing Willy. I think Pat changed it to Kenan, and that is why it says a skinny man.

Good show, there was a lot of great material and keep up the good work.
I might be able to get a sketch ready for the Colin Farrell episode. I had to scrap my Michael Moore sketch, because of time.
