Subject: But are the characters messing around or serious?

Ace of Base comes from when I (as a young girl) actually called a radio station and said I was taking a poll to find the coolest station in the area and requested The Sign because I knew they wouldn't be able to play it. I also think there's something nice about a this station being so behind the times it can't even play an outdated teen song.

I think you have to fundamentally consider your characters before anything else. A terrific gag that's transitioned into poorly will ruin everything. While it is funny that such a station would be so behind the times that they couldn't play Ace of Base, the characters came off to me as if they were serious about booking this DJ for the dance. I think you should stand by what's right for the characters, which in this case would call for a more contemporary request.

If you still wanted to do the Ace of Base gag, I feel it should be approached differently. Perhaps when they request some current dance hit, the DJ counters with having the "new" Ace of Base CD, but then Kandy tells him it's off limits. I dunno, it's still not working right, but as written the gag runs cross-current to your perspective of "these kids are serious about getting their DJ." I'm not going to tell you "jokes about the central comedic thought only" but I've found sketches work better without contradictions (unless the contradiction is an obvious comedic mistreatment itself).

Maybe the fact that I've heard "The Sign" played on the local light music station multiple times is also causing me to view it as a poor litmus test for the kids.
