Chapter 1: The Beginning

Back in 1975 when the television landscape was looking appropriately bleak, a show was put on the air that changed pop culture in America, this show was called Saturday Night Live. For the first few years of this program this show received ratings like no other late night show had in the history of television. This success continued for the first five years of saturday night live's being on the air. After this though the quality of the show was mixed with many lows and many highs. Then in the early 90's Al Gore invented the internet and things began to change all over the world. Little did people know that something was about to happen that nobody on the internet would ever believe would.

Tony Dumont, Writer:

I met Patrick Lonergan back in '95. We used to be the best of pals. Back then neither one of us could really afford a computer, so we saved up for awhile and bought a computer together. We were living in Miliwaukee with our parents and I always thought he had a good sense of humor. We used to belong to the Star Trek fan club, Original Series only, and one time we had turned on SNL and we saw the infamous sketch where William Shatner had told of us Star Trek fans to go and get a life. I was incensed by the sketch but Pat by gosh he actually laughed at the damn thing. I subconsciously realized at that point that Patrick's allegiance to the Federation wasn't going to last for much longer.

Democratic Darkness, Writer:

I met Patrick back in '96 when we were working cleanup at a Peepshow. Every night before cleaning out the booths we would tell each other that we would be doing something better than this with our lives. I remember one time we were cleaning the booths and Pat told me it might be funny if we put coloring in "the trash" and replaced it with our bosses yogurt. Since we were getting about 10 cents above minimum wage I said "Sure what the hell", At this point I knew that Pat definitely had a great sense of humor. As for us we got lucky. Our bosses fridge conched out overnight and the yogurt got thrown out. We quit two days later.

McKenna Fuller, Writer:

Lorne and I met up in 2000 in one of those dirty chat rooms. We finally decided to get our own private chat room and we chatted a lot about our hopes and dreams. Pat had told me that he really wanted to branch out and get some original material on the internet. He had really gotten tired of some of the older bits that were running on the internet such as the endless Mary Kate Gallagher sketches were she always said "When I get nervous sometimes I put my hands in my armpits and smell them". He wouldnt stop bitching about it so I finally told him, "Just do it then and stop whining, so he did.

Tony Dumont:

As long as I live I will never forget Pat's first attempt at a comedy website. I remember it was titled "Pat's big Page of Comedy Laughter." He put it on the net in 2000 and it bombed like you wouldnt believe. Some of his sketches were just plain stupid. "Grace on Fire" and every week their would be a comic monologue by Godzilla, I remember it was like "What's the deal with this gamma radiation come on!" On an internet that is filled with depraved porn, sadistic violence, and MadTv fan sites his was the least like of them all, it was cancelled in just six weeks.

Patrick Lonergan, Head Writer and Creator:

I guess "Pat's big page of comedy laughter" was just some growing pains that I had to go through. After the disgrace of the William Shatner albums I just had to give up the Trek fan club. It was sucking my life away like you wouldnt believe. While my first attempt at a web page was a complete and utter failure I knew it was what I wanted to do in life. I remember receiving one of my few positive reviews from a reader about this absolutely tasteless sketch I wrote called "Suicides lower the population surplus." The reader told me that they were appalled, frightened, and scared reading the sketch. They also said that they would definitely be guaranteed an express trip to hell for laughing as hard as they did at it. It was that time that I knew comedy was the right way for me but I wouldn't be able to do it alone.

Democratic Darkness:

Pat and I chatted all the time back in 2000 as he was trying to find the right way to show original comedy on the internet. He said it knew it had to be open to many different kinds of interpretations but it also had to not be too broad or it would lose interest among internet surfers. Thats when I suggested to him that we try and piggyback off someone else's success.

Patrick Lonergan:

After chatting with Democratic Darkness a lightbulb just went off in my head, I had always wanted to do Saturday Night Live, so why didnt I do that. Thats when I came up with the page name "Patrick Lonergan presents sketches like the ones you see on Saturday Night Live!" I knew from the history of SNL that I wouldnt be able to do it alone. I would need a group of writers with me by my side. At the time though I was living with my Mother and had a dial up line that was a piece of shit at best. If I was going to get a whole group of writers with me doing sketches I was going to need a better connection than the one I had. I was also going to need a lot more money to get the web page space I needed. I wanted this to work more than anything, so I called up a friend that I had truly hoped I would never have to call up again.

By this time it was November 2000 just 3 months away from the premiere episode of Saturday Night You. But the show had many problems behind the scenes. Patrick was still the only writer at the time and he didnt have the money to build the site he had hoped to build. While hopes were high in the aspiring comedy artist heart he knew it could fail at any time. His need to present his art was so great he called the one man he had hoped he would never have to speak to again... Adult film star Ron Jeremy.

Next time on Saturday Night You:

Find out about Ron Jeremy's infamous role in the makings of Saturday Night You. Also hear more about the behind the scenes feuds that arose with the first show and how with less than a week to go Patrick Lonergan thought the dream would be over before it began.

Until Next Time...
