Fair Winds and Following Seas to JAG! We shall miss you!

Welcome! This MB was created for fans of the Donald Bellisario Production's JAG's Lt. Colonel Sarah Mackenzie. This is to be a PG, Family Friendly board, and will not tolerate any explicit language or innuendos regarding the actress who plays Lt. Colonel Sarah Mackenzie, or the character herself.   I was talking with a friend today about NCIS. She didn't know that NCIS began on JAG. I am not sure if it is considered a spinoff or not. None of the JAG characters went to the show, but it began on JAG. I always thought that somehow they would have combined the characters to work together but they had other ideas.
  I find it very funny that it seems (just my opinion) most big JAG fans didn't care for NCIS and most big NCIS fans don't care for JAG even though they both had the same writers and producers LOL! I kinda like both but I guess it is obvious which one I liked best!
  
  Would you have been interested in seeing any of the JAG group go to NCIS on a regular basis?
  
  Would you have been interested in seeing Mac become a liasion of some type with NCIS?
  
  Do you think that NCIS had any effect on JAG ratings?
  
  Do you think that the quality of JAG stories suffered after NCIS was established?
  
  I tried my very best to find screen caps from Ice Queen or Meltdown to show to my friend but no luck. If you know where I can find just one or two please let me know. She said she would love to see these two episodes but I know I don't have them.

  • NCIS is ohk i guess but im not into it with nearly the same passion as i was for JAG. The characters lack the energy and emotional stuff that the JAG characters have.   • I think the move to Friday nights affected JAG ratings. I would have loved to see a Mac/Rabb/Gibbs triangle. I would have loved to see Action Mac on NCIS riding a motorcycle and using her marine skills and markmanship skills as they did not get as much play as I think they deserved on JAG. Yes I felt the writing did suffer as the balance between the drama and humour was lacking. Having certain JAG characters at each others throats was not very entertaining. • I'm working on a fic and need some info. I think it was in Second Sight that we find out Mac's mother left on Mac's 15th b-day. And then Mac mentions she later ran away from her father. It's driving me crazy that I can't find my tape w/ this episode and I would like to know if Mac says how old she was when she left her father or how long she stayed with him.     • I thought both Trish and Montel played their roles vey well, even if I was not enamoured of either character. Montel's character was very combative and acted out with very little concern for the consequences to others and Trish's character seemed to be a bit sullen.   If you could make a dvd of favorites of Mac which episodes would you choose??? Would you choose shippery episodes or KA Marine episodes?? I believe my season 3 dvd has 24 episodes. Do you think we can come up with a list of 24 favorites? I am curious to see what kind of a list we can come up with as a board.

  • Though I thought Mac was an excellent litigator, if we were up against Harm TPTB rarely let Mac be victorious. In a bar fight it would be great as Mac would be stone cold sober and have the advantage but one could still live without her. That leaves on the battle field where my life would be at stake left as my choice. Mac has been shown to have a cool level, quick-thinking head in times of stress and her marksmanship is legendary so that is where I would want her most. As she said herself, Marine first.     • It's fan fiction fairy tale that Mac didn't win in court with Harm. If anything she won more often then he did... though she didn't always win all the cases she should have. I think Mac was the better by the book lawyer. Her cases were more soundly presented. Harm won more often on his presentation, investigator skills and passionate closing arguments.       • I disagree with you on this one p. Mac did not fare well when it came to her cases vs. Harm. I remember someone on the board figured this out (not in the fanfiction world).   I came across some news that CB and DJE will be reunited on a BMW Pro-Am golf tournament on May 17-20. CB has been there before but DJE is a newcomer on this event.
  
  I think this will be a blast and hopefully we get to see some pics of them together and the fans. Any scoop on their present and future projects will be great too.
  Fans should tell them to reunite on a TV project. It does not have to be Jag.
  
  My thoughts and prayers are also with our mourning families of Virginia Tech. The nation and the world are so heartbroken about this.

  You know what I was thinking today I am so excited and looking forward to Army Wives it looks like such a good show. Everytime I have seen the commercial or read anything about it I just have very I high expectations for this show.
  I am excited for CB to have a new opportunity and yet at the same time I am really going to miss Mac. Will I be able to get used to her playing a different type of character? I read on CB's site that Mac and the new character are polar opposites and that she had to pretend like she didn't know how to use a gun.A neat challenge for CB but will I still be expecting these words to come from her mouth
  "I expect you and your shipmates to maintain the respect due an officer If I find this lacking in any way I will haul you out the forward escape trunk and feed your ass to the crabs!" LOL!

  I think it would have been a very interesting JAG episode or an interesting fanfic in real time, to have a military connection of some kind with the shootings at VA Tech, and how Mac, Harm, and the people in the JAG office deal with it. Mac is a very compassionate feeling person and I think this would affect her in a lot of ways.
  
  I think they could have done more to deal with 9/11 on the show. It could have made for some very intense episodes (even more than we got), especially if Mac or Harm had someone they knew in the towers at the time. They could have written someting that was reflective of the sadness that most of the world was feeling after that tragic event.
  
  That's what I think, so I'm curious, do you think it's wise and right to do episodes of a show that showcase a real life tragedy up close and personal? Some people find that distasteful.

  • I think it all depends on how it is done and the motivation behind it. If it is to help others deal with a tragic incident and help us all heal than I think it is a good idea. If it is done to exploit the incident than that is wrong. We all deal with grief differently no one way is better than another one and to criticize someone for the way in which they deal with grief is wrong. Some people want to deal with it right away and head on others might want to take time or just pretend it didn’t happen.   • Sadly my city has gone through this 3 times. Reality is horrific enough without having it regurgitated and dissected relentlessly by the news media, talk shows, and television crime/military shows. IMVHO it just gives the next distubed individual a study guide on how to delay the inevitable (the shooter's death) before creating as much destruction as possible. Though outraged, one gradually gets more and more disensitized to protect oneself. What burns me most, is the constant lists provided of similar events and the number of people killed/wounded, like it is some sort of contest. I feel that airtime would be more appropriately spent informing the public how to recognize individuals at risk to get them aid.   I just want to take a minute here and say that I managed to watch both Skeleton Crew and Death Watch over the weekend. I have been a bit under the weather so it gave me a good excuse to watch both. Now there was a lot of clips of skeleton crew used in Death Watch but what stood out to me most clearly was that I would not have stayed with this show for as long as I did without the addition of Mac. In my opinion, she added so much to this show. Even this early in the series the chemistry between Mac and Harm is so clear.

  ok I have another skeleton crew question In the dvd extras for season 2 CB talks about how she got the role of Mac. Doesn't she say something about how DPB didn't want her to be Mac because she had played Harm's girlfriend who had died in skeleton crew? Well I never saw this episode was it ever shown on NBC? The ratings for the show obviously were not good. And to be perfectly honest she had such a brief performance I am not sure I would have noticed when the show changed to the other network I would have probably thought hey she looks familiar but probably not have been able to tell you where I had seen her from.
  
  You know JAG recycled actors often you would see them again and sometimes after seeing the repeats I could tell you what else they played but not always. I guess my point is why do you think they made such a big deal out of Mac looking like Diane? Do you think most people would have picked up on CB playing her and then playing Mac? Or do you think most people would never have noticed.
  
  They made a big deal out of her looking like Diane, Death watch, We the people, even Bud makes mention of how she looked like Diane. I just wonder why they did all of this over an episode that really never was finished, I mean they left us with Harm being arrested but obviously when "We the people" begins he is not in jail.

  • Jagnut! This is an interesting question. I'd like to say of course they would have remembered CB. She leaves you with an impression no matter how short the role. You find yourself asking who's that? All it would take would be for one person to notice and then everyone would jump on the bandwagon. The show never aired originally in the US but it aired in Australia and I have seen it on the French History Channel in reruns, but not the English History Channel here in Canada.       • Your post wasn't taken as an insult. Some people just have a thing for remembering faces and might have remembered CB in that episode was the point I was trying to make. I'm sure there have been characters who had short but memorable screen-time. They just stood out . The scene in 'Skeleton Crew' that stood out for me was when CB walks down the gangplank and turns around and smiles then laughs. I just thought that that person has such a beautiful infectious smile. The fact that Harm did not respond to her query tells me that Mac in Navy whites may have triggered the kiss but just as he realized Mac looked like Diane but was nothing like her, once into the kiss he knew whom he was kissing IMHO!   • The X-Files project has been in negotiations w/ (I think) the studio for at least 4 years, and Gillian has been on board up to now. I can hardly blame her for finally giving up. Her career "taking off" is something of an exageration, however I believe she's happily settled into her life in the UK. If Catherine's career were to 'take off' in films I could certainly understand her not signing on for a JAG movie in 4 or 5 years. Why would she want to go backward? But, to answer your question, a JAG project without Catherine would hold no more interest for me than an X-Files film without Gillian.   My question is from the episode Lifeline. Im confuse why Renee all of a sudden panicked when Mic told her that Mac really liked her. Why worry that Mac likes her?
  She even wanted to get Harm inside the house.
  Im not getting this at all. Harm and Mac are so hot in this episode.

  • I think she was worried that Mac liked her because that meant that Mac did not view her as a threat.   • I think Renee was so insecure that she wanted to dislike Mac b/c Renee viewed Mac as a real threat to her & Harm's relationship. I think Mac thought Harm was happy with Renee, & as such she was happy for him & that transpired IMHO into a sorta liking of Renee. Does that mean Mac & Renee would've become BFF's & hung out together & did things just the two of them?   What do you think is the most important conversation that Mac ever had that we saw on screen? We saw a lot of turning points in her life in 9 years, what do you think had the most impact?
  
  For me it was the conversation she had with her mother right after her father died. That changed everything about how Mac viewed the past, and I believe healed one wound that was deep within her, at the same time creating another when she realized her mother was simply selfish and neglectful.

  • The conversation with her Mom may have answered questions about her past. Knowing this, did it necessarily help her deal with her future? IMHO no. She still aimed to please or placate (Mic and Clay). For me 'Four Percent Solution' had the most impact. It showed Mac that she didn't have to settle for the 96% if it was really the 4% she wanted. She was worth it. I don't think another wound was opened when she finally saw her mother for what she was. I believe she realized that her mother was just a weak self preserving individual and not exactly the brightest bulb in the chandelier. As children we have a fairy tale images of how things were. As adults we often realize things were not nearly as rosy or devastating as we remember and maybe people just did the best they did with what they had. (NT) -- Jubellant, 16:13:29 03/28/07 Wed

      • Good points. Though I still think Mac's view of her father and his actions was a weight that she carried with her at all times until she found out the truth at his death. I don't know if it would have effected the way she was with Mic and Clay, because both of those situations were brought about by her perceived rejection from Harm, not directly from her father-influenced view of men. It could have, like I said it's a good point. I think what effect her future more was the realization that she was worth loving, that her mother didn't abandon her because she wasn't worth taking along.         • I think her aim to please came from her tendancy to believe that if she pleased her father he would not beat her mother. If she was just a good little girl things would work out. However when her mother abandonned her, that weighed into her believing she wasn't good enough or worthy enough to be cared about. Her father's continual putdown of her character I think led her to fulfill his low expectations of her. Mac's relationship with Clay was a bit of a puzzle for me. It was almost like she became the aggressor. I always felt she resented him on some level, his drinking, his long sudden absences, his deceptions, his taking for granted that she would be there at his beck and call, and his using her guilt about him being tortured for her.           • I think her relationship with Clay came from her invincibility complex. She gave him a pass on his bad behavior because she'd seen him tortured and beaten to the brink of death. Someone as protective as Mac , in that helpless a situation would react with wanting to protect him from everything that she could, even if she couldn't protect him from the torture. Later I think she held onto him because she knew what to expect. She loved Harm, but never knew what to expect from him. With Clay she wanted something real but seemed to be too traumatized and worn out to fight the status quo. I agree when she had all of her senses about her she resented him.             • She wanted to be loved. Harm was gone. Webb was there for her. He told her he loved her. In a way Harm was like her father in that she sought his love, he was the man she respected the most, he appeared to not love her, but in the end she found out that he did indeed love her.   • To me her enlightenment while her father was dying. Not only the talk with her Mother, but with Father Genero as well. He's the one that correctly pegged Mac as a tortured soul, & I think was instrumental in getting Mac to ultimately forgive her mother. Mac was able to find her inner peace, at least in regards to her father & her mother's leaving, & was able to forgive. That had to lift a huge weight from her....I think any child, given that kind of upbringing, would at some point *blame* themselves...Mac for her mother's leaving, for the fact that her Dad thought of her as a "stupid tramp" & she was able to actually find out that even with his faults, her father was extremely proud of her & what she accomplished, how she rose above it all to become an Marine Corps Officer.
