Episode of the Week – Impact -- Araninda, 01:09:48 07/25/08 Fri
Wow, great discussion below, I hate to push it down! Our EOTW is Season 3’s "Impact.” Harm and Bud investigate the mysterious crash of a Marine helicopter. Witnesses claim the helicopter collided with another aircraft, and Harm and Bud uncover a secret installation nearby that is developing a new prototype flying device for the military. But when Harm approaches the installation, he encounters potentially lethal opposition to his inquiry from government security officials. Meanwhile, Mac, who is dating Dalton Lowne, accepts a job offer from his civilian law firm and submits her resignation from JAG. This episode marks the first appearance of Harm’s nemesis Clark Palmer.

1) How do you rate this episode and why? And in this episode, Harriet joins the JAG office as an administrative assistant. Do you think the show was enhanced by having Harriet work at JAG, or did this result in too much emphasis on the personal lives of Bud and Harriet?

2) When Mac interviews at the law firm, the senior partner comments that "it would be nice to look at a pretty face around here”. Why would Mac not be repulsed by such blatant sexist behavior?

3) Mac tells AJ that she’s leaving JAG to "spread her wings.” But what exactly did that mean? Was she dazzled by the lure of a large civilian law firm, a chance to litigate important cases, the large salary? Was she bored with her cases at JAG? Did she want to work with Dalton? Or was she running away from Harm and her feelings for him?

4) Should AJ have tried to convince Mac to stay at JAG? And why didn’t Harm try to talk her out of leaving?

5) Mac: "I’m going to miss you, Harm.” Harm: "I’ll miss you too, Sarah.” They hug, then Harm says: "Your ride’s here. Nice car.” Mac replies sadly: "Yeah, but it’s no Tomcat.” What was Mac feeling at that moment? Was she doubting her new life, or was she doubting her new man and how he measured up to Harm? Was she longing for Harm to express romantic feelings for her?

6) Harm’s stricken face as Mac gets into Dalton’s car and they drive away is a powerful episode ending image. What was Harm experiencing -- the loss of a partner, or the loss of a deep friendship, or the loss of a romantic love? Was he feeling sadness? Or regret? Was he feeling jealousy toward Dalton?

A comment – IMO, Randolph Mantooth almost stole the show as the Marine base commander. I loved him as a young actor on "Emergency” (yes, I'm old!). And didn’t Harm look incredible in that brown Marine t-shirt?

- I'll give it a 5. Love the interaction with Harm and Bud--and the introduction of Clark Palmer. And I loved the tension that was created by Mac 'leaving' to go into civilian practice. We got to see Harm's reaction to that-- and anything that gave us a glimpse into their personal feelings for each other --was yippe kiyoooh time for me. And it made it a lot more dramatic when Mac comes back to defend Harm in People vs Rabb. I think the remark about nice to see a pretty face was a clear sign that it wasn't going to work out. - I liked this episode, alot! This was before I really got my shipper on, as far as Harm and Mac were concerned, so Dalton didnt feel like too much of threat to me. I thought Mac looked so beautiful in that red dress, I couldnt help wishing Harm could see her. Its a 4.75 for me. In this morning's JAG episode "A Separate Peace, Pt. 2," Harm is talking with Bud toward the end of the episode. He tells Bud, "I've never lost a child, but I do know what it means to lose the woman I love."

Who do you think Harm was referring to, Diane or Mac? He obviously lost Diane to death, but he also lost Mac due to his failure to respond in Sydney. This episode occurs after Mic has come back to the U.S., and is the episode right before Mac moves the ring.

So, who do you think he meant?

- I've always thought that he was referring to Diane. Yeah, he had botched things up in Sydney, but Mac hadn't yet moved the ring so I think he was still hopeful that they'd figure things out. JMHO. (NT) -- Christa, 10:58:27 07/24/08 Thu
- I think he was talking about Diane. He and Bud were talking about loss due to death. Despite Harm's reaction at the Sydney airport, I just don't think at this point that he believed he had "lost" Mac and I don't think he realized the depth of his feelings for her. - I also believe he was talking about Diane. I think it would have been insensitive of Harm to equate the loss of a child through death, to the uncertainties of his love life. At this point, Harm had not "lost" Mac for sure, and if he had lost her, it would have been because of the choices he'd made to put their relationship on hold because of their careers etc. Diane was murdered, and he had loved her.   - Actually, they weren't seeing each other. Harm said in "Skeleton Crew" that he & Diane were just friend. He said they always played by the rules, and they were going to get together that weekend to decide about pursuing something more. Obviously, the "something more" never happened. I think that a person is not bad when he/she made a mistake, you can learn from your mistakes, ask for forgiveness too, a bad person is one who do bad things with intention to made other unhappy, or be totally selfish and without remorse and I could see Harm Sr like that.   - I agree with that. We only saw him as reflected through his child's eyes and that is hardly ever accurate-- good or bad. Was there any type of storyline that was never done that you would have wanted to see?

Maybe Harm or Mac married either to each other or someone else.

A new junior officer for them to mentor after Bud had left for the Seahawk.

A new JAG sooner.

- I really would have love to see an episode dedicated to Harm's grandfather and grandmother Sarah's love story, before and during WWII. It would have been so interesting to know the history of Harm's family. I just would love to have 'met' his Grandma Sarah, I'll bet she would have been something else.       - I totally agree with you. Killing her off was just plain ugliness on TPTB's part (his way of flipping the bird during contentious contract negotiations with the actress's husband)....made no sense in terms of the storylines they had built over the years. She was an interesting character, and such a foil for Mac and Harriet - I too wanted to learn what made her tick.         I just think this would have had people glued to the set. When Singer hinted to Harriet and Bud that she had been abused and that her mother didnt protect her, there was a real sadness there, and her scenes with Harriet when she talked to her about terminating her pregnancy, they were powerful and so full of possibilities.         I think NC often got a bad rep for only being on because of who she is married to, but I think she did a great job as Singer. She was annoying as heck! - I would've loved to have seen H&M dating. Trying to keep it under wraps, little squabbles & tiffs & make-ups, teasing, the looks & covert touches. Does anyone know if Season 7 is out on DVD yet and where I might find it? Came up empty at Wal-Mart.com. The DVD sets I do own have been such a huge blessing during my present recovery from major back surgery.. I can't do much, but reliving that great joy at watching my favorite pair do what they do has been better than any medicine they could ever put in a bottle..

In one of the "Legacy" episodes, Mac takes over changing Alexi's taxi tire. At the time, I didn't think it was any big deal--except just now I was "reviewing" another fan fiction story in which Harm is changing Mac's tire for her. That got me to thinking:

I grew up on a farm 20 miles from the nearest town--so you can be sure Dad knew all of us (there were four girls and one boy in the family) knew how to change a tire the minute we got our "learner's permit"--not just the driver's license. (And to REALLY date myself--this was before cell phones, etc.!)

Back to Legacy: remember when Alexi kinda shrugged his shoulders and told Mac he used to be an "executive"--he told others what to do.

Now the question: Is this Bellasario's way of "poking fun" at certain high-class executives, ya think???

Just wondering before I go back to work on several projects.

- After the fall of communism, a lot of people lost their jobs since everything was owned by the government. I think that TPTB were alluding to the fact that he may have had a white collar job, lost it and was now driving a cab. When I was in Moscow three years ago, they were still feeling the effects of the change-over, but they were making great strides. (NT) -- Lee, 13:00:00 07/19/08 Sat
- IMHO it was both: just as we now have cab drivers with doctorates in their native lands, he was caught in a revolution that left him stripped of his past and no future. - I never saw that at all. I guess its pretty subjective. We all see things differently. I merely thought he was referring to the fall of the old USSR and the state of the Russian economy at that time. The only group of people that I know for sure that tptb had a huge amount of contempt for were defense contractors and clueless/ambitious congress people(on both sides of the aisle) who endangered military personnel to further their own careers.(I always liked DPB for that) (NT) -- mkim, 14:39:50 07/21/08 Mon

Hey everyone! I have posted a couple times on here but not recently. I have a bit of a random question..it is about a post from 05..long time huh? I'm pretty sure I got it from here. I don't mean to push anything out of the way, it's just something that I would love to have more info on. If anyone could be of some help that would be great :) I and a few others from the board I am apart of(allthingscatherine.org) sometimes bring up in our posts how silly David and Catherine were on the set..or stories that we heard of. The one in particular we like but don't have much info on is the one where a lucky fan was on the set during the rehearsing of the last episode. It was said that during rehearsing for the kiss, Catherine licked David and he licked her back and it got kinda silly. We just would like to know if this is true..and how that fan got to be there? once again it's very random, sorry bout that lol.

- I could be wrong, but I believe that it was a lucky lady named Daphne who won an auction to appear as an extra or spend time with Catherine on the set for the Finale. Episode of the Week – Ghosts -- Araninda, 00:28:25 07/18/08 Fri
Wow, it’s great to see the board busy with discussion threads! Our EOTW is "Ghosts,” the Bill the Goat episode mentioned in a thread below and the only remaining Season 2 episode to discuss. Harm and Mac learn that AJ and his former SEAL team were part of a CIA-controlled mission during the Vietnam War, and AJ is the only member of the team still alive. Suspecting that AJ is the murder target of a rogue CIA agent, Harm and Mac launch an investigation which leads to the agent's plot to eliminate all witnesses to a terrible incident that occurred during the mission. And when the assassin kills AJ’s girlfriend, he (AJ) decides to take his own action.

1) What is your opinion of this episode and how do you rate it? Was AJ’s behavior in this episode understandable or out of character for him?

2) From this episode, we learn that AJ and Laura have had a serious relationship for some time, that Laura is a judge, married though in the process of splitting from her alcoholic husband. Laura is smart, openly loving with AJ, and determined to share his life and problems, despite AJ being unwilling to open up about this past. Do you think Laura was the right type of woman for AJ?

3) Mac, talking to the midshipman about the mascot goat kidnapping: "I’m sure you’re not the first midshipman to engage in an Academy prank." (turning to Harm) "Isn’t that right, Commander?" In later seasons there were also a few mentions about Harm’s hi-jinks at the Academy. I find this odd, because I think of Harm as a serious student, focused on "following in his father’s footsteps as a Naval Aviator.”     Do you see Harm as a serious student or was he a hell raiser at the Academy?

4) Mac: "I can’t believe I’m laughing after what happened (Laura’s death)." Harm: "Well, you know, Mac, life goes on.”    Was that statement in character for Harm? Did Harm always have such a fatalistic view of life and death?

5) Mac agrees to have dinner with an FBI lab technician in exchange for information about the mine that killed Laura. Was this in character for Mac? Do you think Mac did much casual dating? Was she the type of person to enjoy casual dating, maybe even a few sexual flings, without expectations for a serious relationship?

6) AJ to Harm: "Try my chair, Commander. My guess is that it will be yours in a couple of years.” In the series finale, FWFS, Bud makes a comment that Harm’s new post in London is a steppingstone to the Judge Advocate General position.     Do you think Harm ever aspired to be the Judge Advocate General? Do you think Harm would be happy in that position? Why or why not?

- 1. I rate it a 3.5, nice but not too memorable. AJ is the cowboy we know and love in this one though. Latter seasons, not so much. 2. Laura was good for AJ personality wise, what bothered me was that she was dating a Navy Seal, why did it have to be a process to leave her husband. It's not like AJ wouldn't protect her from that drunk. Why not leave him high and dry? 3. Harm was soooo the type to pull pranks at school. He did whatever he wanted no matter what people said. - This is a 4 for me. I liked the AJ story. I missed this Admiral in the later seasons. I think AJ's behavior was understandable given his history with Osborne, his confrontation with Holford(in the past) and the fact that he'd lost a womanh he appeared to care deeply about. It does not mean she did or did not engage in casual sex. My belief is that she didn't just sleep around, and had to feel strongly about someone first, though not necessarily in love. Not to disrupt the EOTW discussion (I've contributed my 2 cents worth, thank you!), and maybe this has been discussed before and I missed it, but:

If everything post-Paraguay stayed the same-except there was no "Mattie" story line, how would the series have gone?? And especially, what would have happened to Harm??

(This is an "itch" I can't get rid of--and wondering what others thought.)

  - I disagree with the not wanting to be a lawyer anymore. I seem to remember him telling someone that he would make the rounds at the local law firms. Also, when Harm was in Kershaw's office with Catherine Gale, he specifically stated he was interested in their "law department" or whatever they called it, but Kershaw said he just had to trim his staff and lay off some lawyers. That's when Kershaw said "what else do you do?" I think the fact that he ended up doing something other than law was because a flying job literally fell in his lap. How could he say no?     - After coming home he didn't go to any law offices, even though he said he might and when he went to Kershaw's office he spoke up about the only thing he thought they might need that he could do. I used to think that Mattie was one of the things that made Harm swallow his pride and go back to JAG(after Mattie's Grace Aviation) got into financial difficulty, but now...I'm not so sure. Episode of the Week – Shadow -- Araninda, 23:43:20 07/10/08 Thu
This week’s focus is Season 1’s "Shadow,” the first JAG episode after the pilot, airing on September 30, 1995. A disgruntled civilian weapons technician, using a state-of-the-art torpedo, holds the crew of a U.S. submarine hostage. Lt. Meg Austin is introduced in this episode as Harm’s partner.

1) Using our ratings scale, with 5 being great, how do you rate this episode and why? Also, IMO, Harm looked a little gaunt and gangly in this episode, though his eyes were very expressive in the low lighting of the sub. How drool-worthy do you think he was in this episode?

2) Meg is introduced in this episode as Harm’s new partner. Besides both being females and in the military, what, if any, characteristics did Meg and Mac have in common? What, if any, personality traits did they share? Did they approach being in a man’s world the same way?

3) Harm consistently had a female partner throughout the seasons, first Kate, then Meg and then of course Mac. Would the series have been better or worse if Harm had had male partners at JAG with say, a female love interest at night?

4) Meg: "You don’t like me because I replaced Kate.” Harm: "No, I don’t like you because you didn’t disqualify yourself from this mission (because of her claustrophia). That at least I would have respected.” Should Meg have disqualified herself? Would Harm have truly respected her if she had disqualified herself? Did Harm, throughout Season 1, wish his partner were Kate instead of Meg?

5) Do you view the final scene in the conning tower with Meg taking Harm’s cigar as a flirtation? Do you think TPTB was toying with the idea of a romantic relationship between Harm and Meg?

  - I don't think Meg was looked at as a love interest, she was too kid sister like. I think Harm looked hot! I did prefer Kate to Meg. I never thought of Harm having a male partner. I loved "Dream Team" with Harm and Vukovic working together. If only they had introduced and used Vukovic like that. But that is another discussion. Overall I give this ep a 4. - This was a 3.5 for me. Nothing wrong with the episode, it just didnt do anything for me. Harm was gorgeoous, we even got a bit of Jeffrey Dean Morgan in this one, its not one I've watched over & over.2) Meg's approach was different because she was Harm's subordinate, Mac wasnt. Meg was determined to make her own way, with no help from anyone, she was proud, that she had in common with Mac. Mac approached working in a military man's world differently, she was more confident, but, we didnt see her in the beginning. Mac might have just had a tougher hide, due to her father. - Oh I SO wanted that. I honestly thought the two of them would get together. I doubt either Harm or Mac would have been upset. I think they'd be bemused, but not bruised. If it had happened after Harm punched out, there would have to have been some time, or it would have looked really bad. The hook up would have to have happened either before the engagement, or way after the wedding cancellation. Mic and Renee should not have been a factor in Harm and Mac getting together.
