  • She felt, more than heard, someone behind her, but didn't turn around for a minute - there had been plenty of people wandering by and she had paid most of them no attention - people that she knew could have wandered right by without even recognizing her. It was when the person lingered that she began to get curious, craning her neck over her shoulder to get a glimpse of who was standing there, just a quick one, before she did a double take. Adam.. She had thrown herself into her studies when she'd gone to the new school, resolved to make herself feel better - She was jealous and she hurt but she had quickly dulled that ache with books, literature, study groups, and now here she was - he still made her heart flutter a little bit though. • His head jerked up almost immediately as he heard his name - and that voice. He stared at her, almost blankly for a few seconds before taking a drag on his cigarette, clearing his throat a little. He didn't know why he was so surprised to see her .. he had known she would probably be coming back home for her summer holidays and maybe breaks in between. • Finally snapping to reality, she thumbed one corner of the page she was reading over and closed the book altogether, rising to her feet and bringing the small blanket she had been sitting on with her, shaking the bits of sand and grass out of it before climbing up onto the boardwalk and taking a long, asessing look at him. "Still up to that dirty habit, eh?" She referred to the cigarette - she remembered him trying to quit when he'd started keeping the baby, right around the time that she left.. and when she thought of the baby, she felt a bit of a pang - she might not be where she was now were it not for that baby. • He arched a brow at her a nodded a little, a slow smile spreading across his lips - he couldn't believe he'd almost forgotten how beautiful she was, or how easy it was to talk to her "Yeah..calms the nerves, you know?" Wether her was nervous because of her or .. just stressed, well, he'd let her figure that one out. He let his gaze trail over her, his eyes following the gentle curves of her body before he glanced back up at her "I liek your hair.." • To the untrained eye, it could look like she was trying to hide her true identity - truth was she had found herself among a sea of blondes - bleached and otherwise at the new school and struggled to find identity by dying it brown - it still suited her. "Yeah, well everyone at CMU is blonde, it's like, totally the thing.." She grinned as she tossed in the "valley girl" accent typically associated with the blonde haircolor. "It's different but I'll probably let it grow out this summer, or get it treated and back to normal." She shrugged a little bit, a slight smile tugging one corner of her lips. • He grinned a little at her valley girl accent, only amused because it suited her so much .. and he remembered thats a little bit of how she once was, though not in a completely unbearable way. "Yeah, I'm doin' okay .. Lookin' after Leo every other day you know? I never realised before how energetic one year olds can be.." He smirked a little. • She swallowed a little, feeling a slight flutter of panic in her stomach when he mentioned the child. She didn't know if she had thought she could go away and when she came back, it would all be a big nightmare or what, but she supposed she hadn't expected the child to be such an integral part of his life - Adam had never shown a real comittment to much of anything during his life, maybe she was a little jealous that he could show it to this child, and it had nothing to do with her. • He smiled back at her, offereing her a hand at his cigarette. He knew she used to smoke, but he wans't too sure if this new Kendall did. "Yeah, it's pretty crazy. He's walkin' and talkin'. " The commitment thing was where Kendall had gotten it compeltely wrong.. She was the first girl he'd shown any kind of commitment to when they'd first got together, and he was still loyal to her. He knew it was sillly, but he couldn't help it .. he haven't given many other girls the time of day since Kendall had left, though krista had Angel had made a game of setting him up on dates with a few of the younger girls they knew - his sisters friends and relatives, mostly, but his heart just hadn't been in it. • She eyed the cigarette he extended - she had quit a year ago, but now, she felt the need for something to soothe her and took up his offer easily, the stick slipped between her fingers felt like it belonged there, she took a draw and smiled, handing it back to him, blowing smoke to the side "Thanks." She paused, slightly intimidated by the fact that he was talking about the baby, looked to the side nd then focused back on him. "So what are you up to besides looking after the baby? School? Where are you living?" She cocked her head as she inquired - she had wondered these things but had banned anyone from telling her anything about Adam's doings when she spoke to her mother and some of her friends. "Just a casual job in retail, you know so I can help Portia out with Leo, saving so we can send him to a good school and stuff in a few years.." He knew he brought up Leo a lot .. but that kid was his life now and he loved him to bits. • She had emailed back and forth with Elise once or twice over the year but as she had asked for a ban on Adam related chat, she didn't even know if Elise still lived in the place. "Are you on your own or is Elise with you?" She really had drifted a long way from where she had been and who she had been in the year that she had been gone - gone were her dreams of fashion design, now she was much further into the idea of an English major - she wasn't sure what she would do with it but it was something to make her feel like she had a real purpose and that was the most important thing. She nodded a bit when he spoke of the school, the future, with the child - and she almost couldn't stand it, but let out a shakey breath instead of the scream she wanted to release. • She nodded a little, swallowed again - "Does Leo have his own room?" Was it her room? God.. she swallowed again to keep her balance - if anyone else had moved into the room, it would have been fine, she just couldn't explain this - maybe it was jealousy. She wasn't ready to share Adam, she hadn't been - she wasn't ready to take second place to someone else in his life and she wasn't ready to play house with him either - being a mother to the child while it was visiting - she was young, she had her whole life stretched ahead of her and she couldn't even begin to imagine responsibility for a small child. • She nodded a little bit, understanding, and let out a long breath, finally leaning on the railing much as he had, her blanket and book dangling from one hand. She looked up at him, pausing a moment as though to think about what she was going to say and then finally saying it. "Look, Adam.. I'm sorry I never stayed in touch - it had nothing to do with you.." The old, 'it isn't you, it's me' addage wouldn't likely work or make things easier, but he had a right to know that she was sorting out her own neurotic problems while she had been away. She could sure use another drag off his cigarette right now - she didn't even want to be thinking about this, she'd start crying and then there would be no stopping. He'd leave her behind for good, that's what he'd do, even if it was killing him, but he couldn't keep tricking himself into thinking that she actually wanted to be around him. • Crossing her arms protectively across her midsection, she took each word like a blow to the face - it certainly was a blow to her ego, and watched him, waiting until he was finished his tirade with tears blearing her vision. She hadn't wanted to do this, but she supposed in a way, she had known she would return after her year away for this very reason, to clear up this little bit of baggage, or, as it turned out, BIG bit of baggage that had been weighing her down the whole time she was gone. • "Did you ever ask yourself why I wouldn't want to have anything to do with you?" She was getting angry now, not so much defeated, she was upset. "Did you ever stop to consider that maybe I have feelings too? Maybe I have a heart too? And maybe it's shattered.." She had already said too much - she wasn't into her storming off days, but she could certainly turn on her heel and flee - she didn't want to be here, wanted to still be living in her bubble six states over, pining away for him, wishing things could be the way that they were.
