Subject: Miss Universe Canada 2008

So I’ve been reading all of the posts on everyone’s opinions, on Samantha Tajik’s victory last week. And it seems to have caused an up-roar on the credibility of the Miss Universe Canada Organization. Now, a lot of you believe that the pageant is rigged. I don’t have an opinion on that factor, mainly because I’m not an insider. But there seems to be a trend with the way things work within the BOC organization, and it has been evident within the past couple of years.

I think that a contestant having some sort of previous pageant experience is an asset, and to any winner that is chosen, that should be a given. Personally, girls that have gone through a process previously, are the girls that really want to win, and therefore deserve to win, if the crown eventually lands on their head, come finals night.

Taking into consideration the last 3 years, Natalie Glebova was a deserving titleholder and it was evident with her Miss Universe victory. The same should be said about Alice Panikian. She was gorgeous, and although she was sent to and became the International Queen of Coffee, I think her Miss Universe Canada win was very well deserved. With Alice, her placement at Miss Universe could’ve been higher, had the organization avoided making her into a Natalie clone, but still I can’t deny the fact that she was the best for Canada in 2006. Inga’s win was a shock to me, because someone who had an excellent tracking record of pageant experience was shut out. Ramona Amiri, Canada’s rep to Miss World 2006 was the true winner of 2007, and for Inga to win, was a surprise. Even Serene Andahl, who already had MUO prior experience, didn’t even make the top 5! But the “formula” of the tall, Eastern European girl from Ontario, didn’t make the cut in Miss Universe 2007. Getting over my disappointment (Fairly quickly) I eventually began to support her, because she was representing Canada. I was surprised with her non inclusion in the semis, because Inga actually ended up fighting for that spot, until the very end. Her MU gown presentation was amazing! Looking at Inga Skaya now, I think that she’s very pretty and has become very well poised.

Now we go onto my take for this years’ winner. If the Eastern European girl from Ontario formula were to take place, the 3 girls that would’ve had the shot to win were Genida Prifti, Elena Semikina, and Aleksandra Malkin. BUT....Samantha Tajik won. So the BOC organization wanted to change their formula, so that the winners wouldn’t be so predictable, therefore choosing Samantha Tajik? I can’t really say except for the fact that it’s better to have diversity than always having the same type of winner.

With that said, I honestly like Samantha Tajik. I think that she looks pretty (as plastic as some people think she is). If she could come across as more natural, then she would definitely fair well at Miss Universe. Seeing her on E Entertainment, I was pleasantly surprised with her interview and when she speaks, she comes across as real and not rehearsed. I still would’ve loved to see Sahar Biniaz win, but the final choice has already been made. We all have our preferences in terms of beauty and personally, Sahar was the overall package of beauty and intelligence. Being bias to actually speaking to her on various occasions, she truly is a class act. She’s poised and elegant and is just a very classy, young woman.

I’m sad that pageants have become this way. Because back in the day, the winners were chosen solely on who had been consistent throughout the prelims, and shined on stage during the pageant finals. No handpicked winner whatsoever. I guess I’m being naïve to the fact, that maybe pageants have always been this way. But in the past, it was never as evident as it is now. As we take a trip down memory lane, and we assess the winners of Miss Canada’s past, we should be proud of the accomplishments of winners, who made the semifinals at Miss Universe solely because they deserved to be up there.

1995-Lana Buchberger (2nd Runner Up @ Miss Universe 1995)
2000-Kim Yee (3rd Runner Up @ Miss Universe 2000)
2002-Neelam Verma (Top 10 @ Miss Universe 2002)
2003-Leanne Marie Cecile (Top 10 @ Miss Universe 2003)
2005-Natalie Glebova (Miss Universe 2005)
2006-Alice Panikian (Top 10 @ Miss Universe 2006)

In my final analysis, I’m happy for Samantha Tajik. She was pretty consistent throughout the competition, and she looked amazing in her evening gown. Her determination to win was what kept her going, and she conquered her dream, by winning! Sam will be representing Canada this year, and we all need to support her, no matter what. There’s nothing worse than having your own country, not support you. She will be flying to Vietnam to vie for the title of Miss Universe 2008, and whatever the outcome will be, she’s going to do her best to represent Canada.

Thanks for letting me share my opinion.

That was a very thoughtful post, Drew. Thanks for taking the time to write it. (NT)Brent14:47:26 05/05/08 Mon
I personally think that everyone is always wanting their favorite to win. When someone is crowned whether they deserved it or not, no one's going to be happy. So instead of dwell on how a competition is fixed or not, we should all just support our delegate and give her the advice she needs to succeed in the competition. I think support from people, is what every country lacks when it comes to beauty pageants...and that is the biggest downfall of a delegate not doing well in her competition. She reads posts on different message boads, bashing her, and that could either enforce her to prove her detractors wrong, or take it personally and not be focused. Whatever the case is, I too, think Sam will be a wonderful rep with some few helpful tips on make up, and the way she carries herself! (NT)Anna Lee15:34:38 05/05/08 Mon
Thanks Drew!! Great message, whether there was bias or not (which there is in most things in life) this girl is representing Canada, cheer for her or not but shes the only rep we have at MUC. As for contestants being angry, you probably heard that the Beauties of Canada organization was biased before you went and you still signed up. For girls thinking of going, now you know, make your decision based on the info and then make your choice but once you do you cant scream "unfair". Lets wish Sam the best of luck!!
