Subject: Can we have a conversation about pageant ethics?

Former Pageant Contestant

OK, I would like to ask everyone what their definition of a fair pageant is because BOC did not put one on last year, and this year, I fear, they have become even more blatant in their favortism of the contestant who won-Samantha.

SInce last year MUC Samantha was taken by BOC all exspenses paid to watch Miss Universe with the group and Miguel prides himself on selecting his new "queen". She was also sent to numerous competitions inernationally by BOC, which I think we can all agree experience=advantage. I do not know if her dress was provided by BOC at this year's MUC but Inga's was last year so I wouldn't be surprised. I also, would bet my left breast that Samantha did not pay any fee to enter this year's competition. She is now the new MUC and I am sure that the organization eitehr told the judges to crown her or Denis/ Miguel did the honors of rigging the ballat themselves.

Even if you don't believe the competition itself is rigged (which I do) how can we call it fair that one contestant has been groomed by BOC to win the title--more or less sponsored by them?

In my opinion the special treatment of any contestant leading up to or at MUC is grouds for all other girls to ask for their money back. If a pageant director in the states even shows the slightest favortism or sponsors a girl--the whole competiton is considered unfair.

I really don't know what they have ever seen in plastic Samantha--I have seen her up close and she looks stuffed, plucked, and injected. And, to say the least, she's not intelligent.

Jimmy Steele, you run a pageant in Canada....is it considered fair for an organization to give a contestant advantages?

Not trying to be bitter, I just really want to know if other people think its unfair or not?

SO is it unfair?

Jimmy doesn't run a pageant. He's an interview coach. (NT)yyz12:57:23 04/29/08 Tue
Don't come on this board and try to pass things off as facts, when you don't have the faintest idea of what you are talking about. Samantha went to Mexico for work with another former contestant. BOC did not pay for them to come, the client did. Coincidentally it happened to be around the time of Miss Universe 07. thats it. Secondly, Miguel no longer works for Beauties of Canada. He is still a supporter of some girls but has absolutely no say in who wins. If there was really favoritsm and it was so "blatant" as you say, why weren't people on this board last week saying "Samantha is being favoured and will probably win" ? I think If ANY girl had won, all you jealous ex-contestants would have been screaming "ITS FIXED!!!!" Get over it hunny, there is a reason you didn't win...and probably didn't place either. And I really take issue with your statement "Even if you don't believe the competition itself is rigged (which I do)". How do you know? Do you have evidence of this rigged contest? Maybe some photographs? Or a judge's taped confession? Let's see. Because, if you don't have any proof, then you can't be sure and if youre not sure, then you DONT KNOW CRAP. Be careful what you claim to "know", you can get yourself in a lot of legal trouble throwing around accusations like that. And another thing---at least 5 of the contestants had dresses that were either worn in previous years/pageants and even made by one of the judges!!! they didn't win. It may make you feel better about yourself to rationalize your loss, but stop diminishing the win of Samantha and her predecessors. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Samantha won because she did an amazing job. because her REAL scores were highest. Thats the way it works in pageants, whether you choose to believe it or not. (NT)SHUT UP13:07:34 04/29/08 Tue

OK, I wrote this post and its not illegal to bring to people's attention some of the unfair things that go on at MU/ with BOC. Thank you to all the sensible people who might not agree with all my beliefs but are sensible enough to acknowledge that some things BOC does ARE very unfair. I think this is an interesting topic. I don't know if it was rigged, but I'd like to hear what other people think about this. (NT)Brent13:44:35 04/29/08 Tue
Hi Brett, thanks for posting the results so quickly. I am impressed with the level of passion that everyone conveys, positive or negative towards this year's pageant. At least it is being discussed. For many years I only thought that it was Jimmy and myself that had any interest in what happens at Canadian pageants. So it is great to hear from other people also passionate about our pageants.mitch11:44:41 04/30/08 Wed
I can understand the animosity of some that think that the pageant results may be rigged or at least tainted. Preferential treatment may be alloted to some over others. When watching the pageant as a pretend judge, none of that mattered to me. I was there critiquing the pageant based on what I observed without any preconceived notion of any of the delegates or their history or relationship with BOC. I had selected 9 of the top 10, and all 5 of the top 5 solely based on each delegate's performance on that evening. I wasn't influenced by reputation, but I was impressed by all who made it to the top 5 final. (NT)mitch18:51:07 04/30/08 Wed
Anyone could have won, and it was up to the final question to sort it all out as far as I was concerned. Does exposure to other pageants give an unfair advantage? Sure does, no one disagrees with that. In reality, any beauty pageant really is an extremely glorified interview process for a job that only lasts 1 year. And like any interview process, the more practice that you acquire and get, the more prepared you are to do well. Does that necessarily mean that you will win? Well it does give you an advantage, so I do agree with that point that my fellow posters make. (NT)mitch18:54:26 04/30/08 Wed
When it is was down to the final 2, Sahar and Samantha were my final 2 choices as well. Both were clearly the stand out delegates that night in my opinion, they rocked the pageant. Did their previous experience give them an advantage, probably yes. But I wasn't influenced by the candidates association with BOC or with Denis or whether she resided in Toronto. On that evening at 10:28 pm Samantha was selected as the representative of MUC for 2008. And I am very happy for her. (NT)mitch19:28:58 04/30/08 Wed
