Subject: The gift thing is not accurate. Any goods received by post into Australia with a declared value of $AUD1,000 or more is subject to import duty, it does not matter what it is. From the Australian Border Force website inside...
In reply to: DM 's message, "Normally they will ask you if you have a bling budget, ranging anywhere from $400-$1000+ so speak to the dress maker about what your budget is. Shipping normally quick but the dress can often sit in customs for a while then you pay a fee for it to come out. Ask the dress maker if it can be sent as a 'gift' which can usually avoid customs. Tell them the date you need it for and it should arrive by then" on Tue, Jul 19 2022, 13:31:37"

"Goods valued over AUD1000
If the goods you have imported have a declared or assessed value of over AUD1000, you will be sent a First Notice by Australia Post advising that you will need to lodge an Import Declaration with us for the goods.

The Import Declaration will be assessed for duty and taxes and an import processing charge (83KB PDF) will also be applied. After you have lodged your Import Declaration, we will advise you of the amount you need to pay before your goods can be delivered.

Goods with a value over AUD1000 are unable to be to be delivered by Australia Post unless an Import Declaration is made and any duty, taxes and charges owing are paid in full

If you take no action within 30 days of receiving a First Notice then Australia Post may return the goods to the sender (excluding tobacco and tobacco products)."

The only way to avoid paying duty is to lie on the customs declaration and declare the value as less than $1,000 which also means you can not insure it for more than $1000 and as I recently saw on facebook a dress sent from the UK to Australia was lost, so if not insured for full value, you lose. End of story.

  • Most professional dressmakers won’t do this anyway, unless they’re into dodgy business practices! (NT) -- :), Thu, Aug 04 2022, 23:41:35"
