The battle for Echo's life left the stallion breathless, hope flaring anew within his chocolate orbs. Her plummet to the sands would have left him terrified if he hadn't seen her expression before her lapse of conciousness. She wasn't out of danger yet, that much was certain, but she had shown the indomitable spirit he admired so much and had beaten back the disease. Nickering softly, he stood over her prone form, intent on watching over her until she regained conciousness. A smile lingered on his lips as he watched Death bestow her gentle touch on Echo only to disappear as her tears came into view. Confused, he remained silent as her muzzle traversed his pelt, his russet hide quivering in response. He could feel the emotion behind the caresses, as if every touch conveyed the content of her heart. As he lowered his muzzle to return the affectionate gestures of the mare, her whispered words stopped him cold. Goodbye? Alarmed, his gaze flew from the sands to meet her own, confusion and pain reigning in his eyes. -Where are you going?- he asked quickly, unconciously taking a step closer as if to hinder her departure. But then she was gone as if she had never been there, her tragic expression the last image his mind's eye would have of her. Her endearing phrase lingered in his pricked auds, if she loved him, why did she leave? He emitted a mournful nicker after the departed mare, his sense of loss too great to comprehend at the moment. His skies had brightened only to have the sun stolen by night once more. Dejected, he turned back to Echo, resuming his protective stance of before. The muscles and sinews of his neck bulged against his satin hide as he lowered his head to gently nudge Echo, his snipped mug pressing against her cheek. At least one friend remained to him, for he had the sinking feeling that Death had returned to her previous brethren. Furthermore, the stallion knew not if she could ever be reclaimed.
