Subject: Christian Television?!?!?! (What next?)

You know what is really scaring me? So-called 'Christian' television. If TV can't acurately portray humans on the social, emotional, and cognative level (what they do, feel, and think). How can TV acurately portay humans on the 'spiritual' level? Or portray God (even more impossible)? I think it puts God in a 'box' (no pun intended). My parents got Christian satellite (though I was wary of it from the beginning) and I think my relationship with God has suffered because of its introduction into our house.

Even though some (though very few) of the preachers are good to listen to, most of the rest of the programs on 'Christian' kind of scare me. I mean 'Christian' music videos? You think, "Hey this is kind of cool for thr youth and everything," but then you start to realize that "You know what? This is just like MTV and after a while your focus becomes more on the 'stars' (celebrities) rather than on God." When the 'novelty' begins to wear off, what are you left with? A watered-down version of who God really is and what it really means to be a Christian.

Christian TV is like an attack of the 'warm fuzzies'. It consists of much eye and ear 'candy', but where's the beef? Where are the real deep nutrients for the soul? They are hard to find in 'Christian' Television (though if you look hard enough you may find something, here and there).

Most of it is just entertainment, which causes people not to take Christians all that seriously. Instead of thinking: "Man those Christians are powerful! They really have something to say!" Most people are probably starting to think: "Oh! Here comes the freaky entertainment crew with the cool-sounding, but weird music!" Something like that.

Christian TV makes the Christian walk look so easy . . . just say a prayer to Jesus and you're 'in' (and in a way, that is true), but there is much more to it than that. If you really love God and you've made a commitment to Him, you're not going to say one moment: "I love you and need you," And the next moment spit in His face and say: "I don't need you any more, I can do this by myself!" That just doesn't make any sense! If you love someone, you're going to PROVE it.

Also, Christian TV makes it look as if God is going to take away your problems as soon as you pray to Him. He DOES forgive you and take away your sin, and gives you eternal life when you pray to Him that you surrender your life to Him, but . . . He's there to help you get THROUGH the problems of life, NOT make all your problems 'magically' disappear.

Christian TV makes life seem so easy and happy, as if God will give you everything you want when you want it. But life is about the ups as well as the DOWNS, and God knows that this is how we learn and grow, through perservering through the trials and tests. And if we trust in Him, he will lead us through them, and we will be victorious in the end. Though we will not being immediately self-gratified in the way that TV promotes.

That is what I see happening in Christian TV. It makes it seem that God will answer everything IMMEDIATELY and that you'll always be happy and have everything you want. But the truth is, He provides us with what we NEED when we need it, (if we ask, and sometimes, even if we don't), and our WANTS may or may not be granted right away (if at all). He's not a 'magic genie'.

Like I said before, the church needs to 'get real' about thier faith, and stop playing 'rock band' like a bunch of careless and crazy kids. We need to reach out to this dying world with REAL caring and compassion, not just 'the warm-fuzzies'.

And here's the WORST part about 'Christian' TV . . . It promotes commercialism! It is selling 'Christian' music, 'Christian' housing plans, 'Christian' skateboards, 'Christian' bumper-stickers & keychains & fuzzy bunnies! Need I go on? This is NOT Christianity, this is a marketing ploy! Who's going to take us seriously if they keep doing this sort of ridiculous, embarrassing, and childish things that (in my opinion) teeter on the border of sacrelige?! I can only but sigh and wonder at the monster that's been created by so-called 'Christian' TV (and contemporary music , as well.)

Does anyone agree with me, or have anything they'd like to add to this topic?
