It's one of the those irregular verbs from 'Yes Minister'.

Where (or was that a joke?)? I certainly can't recall ambient radiation ever being a problem. In fact, warp cores are pretty resiliant things. We have seen ships crash land on planets without the core breeching. We have seen the Borg shoot chunks out of the hull of ships without problems. We've seen ships loose all power and the core doesn't breech. We've seen ships have nacelles shot off and the core doesn't breech. Yes a core will breech if it tke critical damage, but I submit that is no different to most Sci-Fi ships. Two death stars blew up because their cores took critical damage. Does that mean all SW engine scores are going to blow up in 'ambient radiation'? I certainly don't recall any ion storms causing worp core breeches, so I don't think we can automatcially assume that an ion canon would do so.

Well we have seen runabouts take multiple hits from capital ships without loosing shields. I think the TIE Defenders are going to have to fire for some time before the shields come down. OTOH, we know that fighter level weaponary can quickly penetrate Defender shields. So while the Defender is shooting and trying to bring down the Runabout shields, the runabout is going to be shooting holes in the defender.
