Angie rolled her eyes, scooting around on the rock to face completely away from Alexis, who was muttering to herself as though mad.
Marble and metal, what a mess, she thought bitterly, propping her chin in her hands. They were quite high up now, and the mountain pass was bleak and chilly; as she looked down into the lush forests of the western valleys the girl reflected upon how very different the East was from the West. The hills and woods that she looked upon presently were quiet and peaceful - the trees themselves seemed ordered, and here and there great tilled fields broke the monotony, each patch with a walled city in the center. But the woods of the East were deep and dark and wild, with few paths and fewer clearings, and only a traveler with a brave heart and determined spirit would dare to travel there; a small body helped, as well, Angie reflected, and her mouth twisted into a half-smile of gratification. She was looking forward to returning East, burdens in tow or not.
Jeff curled into a nook beneath the rock with Gwennie cradled in his lap. The warm presence of the little cat was a great comfort to him and he felt almost safe in that moment. Much as he was coming to dislike the fire-haired imp Angie, he felt strangely secure when she was out on the watch. She was tougher than anyone he had ever met - almost brittle, he thought to himself sleepily.
But before he drifted off, he returned his thoughts to the moon-bright girl sitting just outside his shelter. She was a far more pleasant object to have in his mind just before sleep.
Gwenneth rested her chin on her boy's knee, weary but unwilling to sleep while the girls remained out in the open. But then she sensed the presence of Monet quite close, and knew that he was watchful. Grateful beyond measure, the masked Silent Paw closed her eyes and followed her boy down into sleep.
