Gwenneth's eyes widened at the pretentious nature of Gabriel's question. She could see instantly where he was headed, and awaited her boy's reply with some trepidation.

"Of course I have friends!" Jeff replied, his voice thick with defensiveness. "Lots of them! We do stuff... all the time..." Even to him, the lie sounded weak, and he saw the Cheysuli demon raise one eyebrow. No, it wouldn't hold water.

"All right, fine," he said quietly after a moment. "I guess... I guess I only have one or two friends, and even they abandon me sometimes. It's like I'm not even there." He hung his head, examining his hands with studious care. "They have fun together, and they often will let me join if I come up and ask, but... it's almost as though I don't really exist to them."

He glanced sharply at the warrior. "But it doesn't matter. I have a family that loves me, and Gwennie... And why would you care, anyhow? Why should the troublings of a human boy concern you?"

::What he says is true,:: Gwenneth explained to the warrior and his wolf. ::If he is included in any of his peers' activities, it is almost like an afterthought. If he does not speak up, they honestly seem not to notice him. But, of course, he has had his share of malicious treatment. In fact, just the other morning...:: She sighed, and rested her chin on her boy's knee. ::They teased him about me. Called him a Cheysuli, if you can believe that, accused him that I was his-- oh, what did they say?-- beast-lover, or something horrible to that effect. The boy was most distressed, and reacted violently towards me. It was directly after this event that I left the city in search of aid... and found the two of you.:: She smiled with gentle sadness. ::This accusation hurt him most particularly of all the others that have been directed towards him. It is painfully ironic.::
