John, it sounds as though you were wrongly advised and sold for too little. But of course a broker has an interest to keep the price down - to get a quicker sale; the difference in commission is less than the delay and extra work to sell a higher priced yacht.

The moral is, do your own research, make a price judgement based on a valuation that you think the yacht is worth (plus a bit for adjustment), instruct your broker accordingly accepting no attempts to get you to lower the price (he/she will surely not refuse to act for you), negotiate (through your broker) with a potential buyer with adjustments for any deficiencies found by buyer’s survey that you were genuinely unaware of.

But the original poster has a very valid point – the price that you judge is fair value must be based on the national price median for that class of yacht and its model/year – give or take the variance of your boat’s condition from the median. If the value perception of a class is above or below other similar yachts that is a result of free market forces that we must accept, after all, there has to be reasons for it, even if they are fuzzy and irrational. “The market is always right”.

Best, Brian.
