OK Nick – you’ve made some good comments, but I don’t see how my suggestion was made in a ‘crass’ manner. My apologies if you feel offended by my comments, but I rarely visit here because the interface is so unfriendly and you have to wade through so many pages to read a thread. Also as far as I can see, there is no search facility; this is a major benefit to a database of knowledge.

Your comments:
“Basically a lot of people with the technical know how lack the tenacity to maintain an interest long enough even to get something started let alone to run it.”

I didn’t volunteer to run it – I’m not interested in that – I said I would set it up and I have – took me ten minutes – more of that later.

“Add to that the fact that a lot of IT people seem to change jobs frequently and you have an additional instability for anyone doing it through their work.”

Yes people change jobs – all I can say is that the space I am offering is professionally maintained, regularly backed up with an excellent record of being ‘up’. Several commercial sites are running on the same box.

“I would add a word of caution though, what is needed is functionality, not a load of whizz bang, most websites are merely a vehicle for their designers to show how clever they are and nothing to do with achieving the aims of the client.”

There is no whiz bang here. It is pure functionality and is not something that I have written – it is freely available software (www.phpbb.com) – I have simply installed it on some space I have. I have no intention of modifying it although I could if I had the inclination. It is out-of-the-box forum software.

What I have done:
As I said, this took me ten minutes, I seek no remuneration and do not wish to get involved in administering the site beyond making sure it technically works.

I have placed the forum under a domain I use to play with. If you and others like it, I would want to port it to a decent domain name.

Have a look at www.command-it.co.uk

The first page lists the forums – I have created just two – the first called ‘General Chat’. The admin person can set up as many or as few of these as required. I have posted a couple of example messages under an example topic. Just click on ‘General Chat’, then one of the topics.

One of the example messages is a poll that you can reply to saying whether you like the forum or not. This is quite a useful feature albeit a bit gimmicky.

I have set this forum up so that only registered users can post to it – click on register in the top left corner – it requires only the asterisked items of info. One of the threads here said that they viewed a registration as useful but the admin person can set a forum to be open for all with no registration if you prefer. Its entirely and easily tailorable. An example of an open forum is ‘Open Forum’ – anyone can post to this, very much like this one. Personally I like the idea of users registers as the admin can send update emails – for example about the proposed solent meet.

What more can I say or do – I’ve apologised for my perceived crassness and I’m offering you the chance to move to, what is in my opinion, a better forum presentation. I’ve also acted on what I said I would do.

If you wish to take up the offer, all you need do is register yourself, let me know and I’ll make you the admin and then you plan the site and make the move. I’ll leave the site up for about a month and then if you don’t want it, I’ll delete it. No damage done to anyone.

Tony
