Giles

On FOOSTER (Hull No 26), the keel lifting cable is attached to a bolt through the steel cage on the top of the keel. If the cage should disintegrate totally, it would be possible to drop the keel. The cage can be inspected by removing the port lining from the keel box and winding or jacking up the keel.

Like Kim, we have a large hex SS bolt low down on the port side. When screwed in, this contacts and bears against the very top edge of the steel cage. This helps to control the slight knocking sound from the keel when in a short sea. As Kim says, it would also help to prevent the keel exiting through the roof in the event of a seriously over-cooked broach. Note that broaching is not normally a problem. The boat handles easily in a broach due to the large rudder. I think this locking bolt is just above the waterline, depending on how well loaded the boat is. When heeled, the waterlevel drops lower as the wide hull lifts the bottom of the keel box nearer to the surface. We have no sealing on our locking bolt and occasional get a slight weep past the thread.

The roller runs on a SS bolt about 10mm dia which is right at the bottom of the keel box at the point where the keel box is joined to the hull. Both bolt head and nut are invisible behind the thick layers of glass lay-up in this area. We recently replaced the roller on Fooster and fitted the new roller on a small SS subframe which is fixed inside the keel box from underneath the boat.

Hope this is useful. Let me know if further details would be a help.

Regards

Godfrey
