Hi Niall,

I have not sailed a 501 - I have a 500 that has a slightly different rudder shape - but I would be surprised if the boat is so unbalanced when the original 500 is perfect in this regard. The 500 rudder was open to criticism (by me, at least) for its extreme extension beyond LOA and I believe the change with the 501 was to correct that, leaving the hull and keel identical. I know of at least one 500 owner who replaced the rudder with the 501 version and I heard no complaint about balance.

Before embarking on such a drastic move of rudder modification investigate the sail plan and mast positioning - as John Templar recounts in an earlier thread any fault there has a critical effect on trim and handling.

Regards, Brian.
