John, this thread really bewilders me. It first started with T501 steering and as the T501 rudder is quite different to the T500 I could not comment (although typically, I did). But when others are complaining about the T500 too, it makes me confused. I just do not experience this effect; I find the balance just right, with a touch of weather helm when hard on the wind, just as it should be. Of course the rudder is too far aft for my taste, making the steering too responsive, twitchy even for leaving alone too long, but on Beachcomber the balance, when under proper control, is perfect on any point of sailing.
Up to F4-5 that is, above that I get some massive area of the mainsail, if not all, rolled up because alone, as I usually am now, it is a nightmare reefing the mainsail in a heavy wind, and like you, find she can sail so well on the genoa - even to windward - that can be adjusted by furling easily without leaving the cockpit.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with increasing the effect of a semi-balanced rudder if there is too much weight on the helm - but some weather helm is good; it is a safety factor causing a fore and aft rigged sailing ship to round up in an unexpected, heavy gust thus easing the weight of wind in the sails.
