Hi Niall
When we bought ALKANET (Bilge keel 501) in 1994 it had a fearsomely heavy helm (with some weather helm). During our first winter ashore we compared our rudder to another and found the rudder stock bent at the point it exited from the blade. The result of hitting something pretty hard we assumed. I cut it off, sleeved it and welded it back on again in the position of the undamaged rudder.
The following season there was an improvement but the helm was still very heavy despite playing about with mast rake.
The following winter I made a new rudder, moving the axis if the rudder stock back in the blade. I have all the details if you want them.
Result - finger light helm (maybe a tad too light) but certainly much easier on a long passage and much easier on the auto-helm.
regards
Poul
