I've seen the mod on alkanet and it is an excellent design, well executed.

I would say, though, that when most people complain of excessive weather helm on a 500/501 they really should be looking at their sailplan.

By depowereing the sails you can reduce weather helm and not affect the speed of the boat. The 500/501 carries rather more sail than it needs in anything of a blow, it's for that reason it outperforms heavier boats in lighter winds, you can't have everything. You don't necessarily need to reef but you can let the main down the track a bit.

One of the things I'm sure alkanet's mod does is reduce the vicious pull on the tiller that occurs under engine, when I always found the best thing was to leave the autohelm in charge.
