Niall
The main purpose of modifying the rudder on Alkanet was to reduce the 'weight' on the helm as opposed to reduce weather helm (which we still have). Weather helm can usually be handled by sail plan as indicated by Nick.
We built a new rudder and moved the axis back in the blade by 4 inches. This has made a tremendous difference to the effort required on the tiller particularly when under power.
I have a set of moulds we made up when making our new rudder and a set of photos of the stainless steel tangs we welded onto the rudder stock to give it strength (we didn't want it dropping off!) You are welcome to borrow any of this if you decide to have a go.
If we were doing it again I think that mpoving the rudder stock two and a half inches would be enough and we wouldn't need to trim off the top of the leading edge of the blade.
You need a good stainless welder and glass fabricator.
Beware - I think the blades vary for each type of keel configuration - ALKANET is a 501 bilge keeler.
She is currently in Oxfordshire - 10 weeks and back into the Thames for her annual trip to Poole!
Poul
