But why, Nicholas, does their name command a premium? Surely the (perceived) quality is what has given them their name. We are not talking about designer labels here, where marketing hype can inflate public perception of a brand so that it becomes desirable to possess some useless trinket to impress….. hmmm, or are we? No, that’s for stinkpot people.

Of the above I am only familiar with Westerly and Moody – the Westerlys I sailed in were certainly well made (although I am going back many years) and the modern Moody I know is excellent, better, in fact, than one I chartered 20 years ago. They are both more well-known than Trappers, volume production may be responsible – there are just more of them about.

One marque I did some research into because I almost bought one once, is Hallberg-Rassy – these have a legendry reputation, which is well deserved I found out as I went over, with the proverbial fine tooth-comb, the 23 year-old H-R31 I was interested in. The sheer workmanship and materials quality of the internal joinery was a revelation. I am not so impressed with the H-R26, which a marina neighbour owns and which would perhaps be a competitor for the Trapper 300. I would be interested for James’ professional opinion on how that compares price-wise to the Sadler and Trapper.

Regards, Brian.
