As I understand things, the keel studs have a cone head with the threaded end of the shank coming up into the bilges.

Undoing the nuts of course drops the keel, but frankly I wouldnt fancy my chances at getting any of the studs out to check the condition.

Once the keel is off and laying down I would imagine it would be relatively easy to clear the studs of whatever it is covering them and then you could try to drive them out for examination.

Removing the bolts singly without dropping the keel would require the bottom of the keel to have something like 5 ft ground cleance and each bolt would have to be driven for at least the first few inches until it comes free. I cant imagine them being to sloppy a fit so they would have to be able to slide straight until free.

BUT, and its a big BUT, if those studs where in situ when the keel was cast......ALL BETS ARE OFF!

thoughts ...
The shite these things were cast from says minimum cost, so ...sand casting to allow stud holes to be formed is more expensive than just setting the studs in the keel ...take your pick....(dont even think about machining the holes out afterwards)

Whatever you do tho' your going to be stuck with the C&C/TRAPPER GRIN come what may, sikkoflex will hold it for a few years but it will be back sooner or later

Harold... where are you ????? you could tell us
