I am glad to have seen some nice things in Fresno. I initially wasn’t going to be able to attend Fresno and was going to appoint another committee member to attend from our team, but I am glad I went. It may be the same thing year after year, but frankly I think it is good to regroup without the girls around so we are able to enjoy a team experience. Furthermore, I love seeing all of your faces year after year. This is a time to regroup and stay connected. For starters, Mikaela and Crystal made us so proud. Their stage presence and gratitude seemed unparalleled. Beautiful, articulate, relatable, and gracious. We had some innovative ideas from volunteers across the state this year. I am all for the new changes and ideas. Next up, Jenna Aluisi is a bundle of fun energy. After workshop I think we decided we will finally commit to starting a princess program this year in our local. Speaking of Jenna’s, I was shocked to see Jenna Harvey, former 1st runner up back as an ED for Gavilan Hills/Northern Ca. I remember speaking to her years ago about coming back as an ED, but didn’t expect to see her back so soon. I love seeing strong formers come back to be on our team. Additionally, I am thrilled more girls will have another chance to get to state since I heard Gavilan Hills wasn’t going to happen this year. At the meeting it was announced that the Jenna’s are teaming up to revamp the princess program. With young energy like these young girls, it will help us old folks keep the program sustainable. We appreciated everyone who spoke and took the time to put together presentations.

Take a moment to reflect on how lucky we are. Life really isn’t so bad, and if people still want to complain about every detail, I hope they reevaluate their lives. I’d surely like to think everyone had just one thing to be thankful for this weekend. If you can’t think of anything then I feel exceptionally sorry for you. Teen talents are now only 90 seconds (praise the sky), and hopefully we can secure that car sponsor for our new Miss California. I, for one, am glad to have spent time with you all, I’m glad to be a part of this organization, and I’m glad to have such an organized and powerhouse state family. Whether workshop was redundant or not, thank you for yet another year of laughs, smiles, and memories everyone.

I removed the entire post about Miss California's host family since there were far too many unproven allegations about the host family and about Miss California and her alleged inability to get along with others. I have no way of knowing what is true and what isn't, but if anyone has any proof that the host family treats Miss California's improperly, I'd like to think you would contact Bob and tell him what you know. Likewise, if you have knowledge from the titleholders themselves, then you should encourage them to speak up so future titleholders don't have to endure conditions that hamper, rather than encourage their success. And if none of it is true, then you all have some apologizing to do to a family that has been staunch supporters of this program for years.

The new pageant year is beginning and I was reflecting on the last few years. Miss California Organization is the largest and should be the strongest. Our organization needs to unite and each of us need to rethink about past behavior. We have the most fabulous people in our state and we need to let everyone else see the best of us. Have a wonderful year!

Well, until we find out who the actual Miss CA prelim swimsuit winners were, here's a chance for everyone to express their opinion on their own favorites. You can select one contestant from each prelim group (refer back to your program book for prelim groupings, unless some kind soul still has the prelim group graphic they can re-post). PLEASE, no comments about your picks or anyone else's. Just the names, or names and titles, of the contestants. Don't list them by titles only, since many people might not remember who held that title.

This is just for fun, so let's keep it fun. The votes will run through the end of September. The whole thing will be removed at the first signs of negativity.

Another California local titleholder is on facebook complaining that she has not been able to collect any of the scholarship money won at the local and state level. The hold up is the local pageant. I have figured out why Bob keeps these local EDs who don't pay their scholarships. If a girl can't collect her local scholarship then she can not collect her state scholarship. Both Bob and the local ED win.

Subject: Miss CA "Prediction" Message Removed

Author:
Marge the Moderator

Date Posted: 15:55:12 09/17/13 Tue

I removed a message regarding a prediction that a certain contestant had the 2014 Miss California title "in the bag." At least one of the responses was sensible - they noted that the contestant in question wouldn't even agree with that assessment. It is a bit premature, to say the least - California has yet to crown a single local titleholder, so at this point, no one's going to win.

As we learned this past weekend, what you did in the past, doesn't predict the outcome of the next pageant. Neither Miss NY nor Crystal had won a preliminary competition at Miss America, yet they outscored every single preliminary winner. Last year's Sweetheart winner, who was touted as a Miss America winner from the moment she won Sweetheart, didn't make the top 15, though she did win her state pageant, but if I'm not mistaken, she was the first Sweetheart in several years to do so.

So for every Miss California hopeful out there, and for every Local Director out there, don't for a minute think this won't be another highly competitive year at Miss California, as long as each one of you puts your heart and soul into preparing for the competition and being the very best "you" that you can be. Take nothing for granted. One of the exciting things about pageants is that surprises do happen, new girls "come out of nowhere," veterans who weren't contenders return vastly improved. If, as a director, you don't feel you can offer your titleholder all the support she needs to prepare her to her highest potential, seek help. Start with your Field Director, and see who else they can bring in.

Good luck to EVERYONE competing this year. And one word of caution - if your talent is ballet en pointe, I recommend against performing any ballet with the word "swan" in the title. People from other states get horribly confused and upset for some reason!

Most Auspicious Name: Miss Alabama, a.k.a. Chandler Champion. Then again, maybe not; she didn’t even make it to the semi-finals.

Weirdest Intro Joke: ”Listening to your phone calls from the nation’s capital. Just kidding! I’m Miss District of Columbia, Bindhu Pamarthi.”

Runner Up: “From the home of fast horses and beautiful women — better not get those two things confused. I am Jenna Day, Miss Kentucky!”

Best Sports: Misses Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, and Nevada. Other girls got to dance on Atlantic City’s boardwalk or the deck of a swanky boat; this group had to pretend they were super pumped to deliver their intros inside the White House sub shop. (And not even the location that serves salads!)

Most Shameless Plug: “From the home of Nashville, the country music capital of the world and the hit ABC show, I’m Shelby Thompson, Miss Tennessee.”

Clumsiest Attempt at Cultural Literacy: “I’m not breaking bad, I’m breaking through. Say my name! Alexis Duprey, Miss New Mexico.”

Greatest Achievement in Passive Aggression: “Our Utah Jazz sure aren’t bringing home the championship. Guess It’s up to me! Ciera Pekarcik, Miss Utah.”

Most Anonymous Experts: The team of pros who judged the pageant’s preliminary rounds. Sorry, guys — if the hosts had actually said your names on camera, Mario Cantone would have had barely any time to mug.

Loosest Definition of the Term “Celebrity Judging Panel”: Here’s our roll call: Lance Bass, who shot for the moon but landed in Atlantic City; the aforementioned Mr. Cantone; Dr. Deidre Downs Gunn, a.k.a. Miss America 2005 (so it really is a scholarship program!); Barbara Corcoran of Shark Tank; The Chew co-host and all-around great lady Carla Hall; subway busker Joshua Bell; and New York Knick Amar’e Stoudemire. What, Heidi Montag was busy?

Most Awkward Utterance: Pat Pruitt of Ernst & Young, proving why he usually doesn’t talk onstage: ”It’s very good, and we’re very proud of our relationship with MissAmorgOoverization.”

Strangest Tradition: The Shoe Parade. Seriously, what’s the deal with the shoe parade?

Best Personality: Miss Missouri Shelby Ringdahl, who said this after preparing for the swimsuit competition in about two minutes: “I had time for hairspray and butt glue. That was it.” Butt glue! I’d have given her the crown based on butt glue alone.

Runner Up: Miss Kansas Theresa Vail, a tattooed army sergeant who sings opera but prefers to play Katniss. “My original talent was going to be archery,” she explained. “I’m singing by default because there is a clause against projectile objects.” There is no clause against stealing our hearts, though.

Best Accessory: Miss Florida Myrrhanda Jones’s bedazzled knee brace, a functional yet versatile piece that complements bikinis, eveningwear, and ghastly baton-twirling getups equally. (Maybe it was actually a good luck charm — Florida absolutely killed it in Talent.)

Biggest Head-Scratcher: This fun fact, which flashed onscreen as Miss Georgia Carly Mathis sang “On My Own”: “Her dog has met the President.” Think they shook hands?

Worst Judgment: ABC and the Miss America Organization determined that it was totally fair to ask the first finalist about Miley Cyrus, the second about scorned political wives… and the third whether she thinks the U.S. should intervene in Syria. One of those things: not like the others! Kudos to Miss California Crystal Lee for keeping her cool — and actually delivering a coherent answer to that absurdly tough question.

Most Diplomatic: Miss Oklahoma Kelsey Griswold, who, for the record, believes that Miley’s antics have been “a little bit not super tasteful” — but “ha[s] to respect her creativity.”

Most Skillful Non-Answer: As delivered by eventual winner Nina Davuluri, Miss New York. She was asked what message Julie Chen is sending by admitting that she’s had plastic surgery on her eyes. Full transcript: “Unfortunately, I don’t agree with plastic surgery. However, I can understand that from a standpoint. But more importantly, I’ve always viewed Miss America as the girl next door, and the girl next door is evolving as the diversity in America evolves. She’s not who she was 10 years ago, and she’s not going to be the same person come 10 years down the road. So I wouldn’t want to change someone’s looks or appearance, but definitely be confident in who you are.”

Clearest Foreshadowing: Miss New York and Miss California stood in front of a curtain decorated with the Miss America logo as they clutched hands, waiting to hear the panel’s final verdict. The logo includes a crown — which appeared to be floating over NY’s head. Lesson learned for next year’s finalists: Try to stand stage left.

Best Consolation: Courtesy of Jason Derulo’s “The Other Side,” which played as Davuluri received her actual crown: “Tonight we’ll just get drunk.” Sound advice for a celebratory Davuluri — as well as the pageant’s 52 non-winners.

Congratulations to our Miss California, Crystal Lee, on being named First Runner Up to Miss America 2014. I have to admit I was a little disappointed because I thought she had it, but it is what it is. I congratulate our new Miss America, Nina Davuluri, I know she will make a fantastic Miss America.

This morning, I went from feeling a little disappointed to being upset after reading the national message boards. Why is it when a woman of color wins there has to be some sort of reason for her win, other then the judges felt she was the best suited for the title. Why is it that people say the only reason why they won or places is because they are a minority. Why do people have to call Nina a terrorist, mistakenly assuming she is middle eastern. She is of Indian Heritage. These comments and other negative comments posted on the boards show the ugly side of pageantry. I wish it would stop.

Subject: Why Crystal should (and can) be the next Miss America

Author:
Ernie Koneck
[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 21:02:09 09/13/13 Fri

Here's my take on the events in Atlantic City, going back to the arrival ceremony through the 3 nights of prelims.

1) Crystal has presented a hip, fashion-forward, consistent image through her wardrobe from the moment she arrived in AC through the 3 nights of competition. If MAO wants a Miss America to propel them forward into the future, and not a throwback to the past, she's their girl.

2) But it's more than clothes. Crystal has embraced "Women In STEM" as her platform, which happens to be a major MAO initiative and something she has strong personal experience with. As she has pointed out, her inspiration is her mother, the only woman computer programmer in her department for 20 years. And this was after she left her native Taiwan to pursue greater opportunities in the US.

3) Crystal has a BS in Human Biology from Stanford, which she earned concurrently (in less than 4 years) with a MA in Communications. She is one of 3 principals in Nanoly, a biotech startup that won $70,000 in a competition sponsored by Duke University. Nanoly is applying for patents on its technology, which uses nanotechnology (microscopically shrinking molecules) to make vaccines infinitesimally small, so they can be shipped long distances without refrigeration, as all normal vaccines require. The result - vaccines can be sent to poor 3rd World countries and poor rural areas of the US at very low cost, allowing people who have never been vaccinated for contagious diseases to be vaccinated for the first time. In other words, Nanoly's technology has the potential to save millions of lives - at this point you may start to realize that Crystal isn't your average pageant titleholder.

4) Crystal's goal with her platform, should she become Miss America, is to use connections she has made, working at Silicon Valley companies such as Yahoo! and Dropbox, as well as with 2 Northern CA congressmen, to launch major initiatives to encourage STEM education among young women, and to potentially bring major new high tech sponsors to the MAO to sponsor ongoing STEM programs, which will significantly contribute to the MAO's scholarship fund, and build the MAO's visibility and prestige as a scholarship program.

5) The above points outline why Crystal should be Miss America 2014. On more pageant-related issues, she has been consistently strong in every area of competition. While she hasn't won a preliminary award, it's worth noting that no one on the prelim judging panel has any experience or knowledge of dance (her talent) and the talent winners were a singer, a violinist and a baton twirler - with an injury. The 2 areas of talent expertise on the panel were vocal and instrumental. And let's face it, there is never a judge on a Miss America panel who is a technical expert in twirling, but every amateur feels comfortable judging a twirler - whether that's right or wrong, it's the truth. And the fact that this twirler suffered an injury in rehearsal and performed that night may earned her a few pity points. In the interview after her win, she talked about her injury, which sounded more serious than it could have possibly been for her to perform at all, so it likely was somewhat less serious than reported. That's not "sour grapes," it's just common sense.

As for swimsuit, well if you look at Miss GA - the ss winner in Crystal's group, and you look at Crystal, their body type's are very similar. Now I'm not in AC to evaluate one' presentation vs. the other's, but worse case scenario, they were really close.

6) As an outsider (not in AC) looking in (via the Internet) it appears to me that Crystal is a) one of the few contestants who is forward-thinking, not concerned with the past of the program, but the future, and b) one of the most consistent contestants across all areas of competition. I will admit that I have spoken to her briefly about her interview, and her major concern was that she was cut off before she finished her close. But when she told what she did get to say in her close, my reaction was that being cut off wouldn't hurt her at all. She said what she needed to say. And for the record, being cut off wasn't her fault; one of the judges started asking a question after the 30-second time limit was signaled, so she ate about 10 seconds into Crystal's close time.

7) I think the final night panel will like her more than the prelim panel. The prelim panel seems to be more "old school," especially when you consider their prelim winner choices. From what I've read and heard, none of the prelim winners were runaway, obvious choices. Yet every time, this panel went with the "old school" choice over the more contemporary choice. Also, based on what Crystal told me, they seemed like a very inexperienced panel in interview.

8) I'm assuming the final night panel will watch all the top 15 interviews - and it is inconceivable to me that Crystal won't make the top 15. I think this panel will like her more because
a) one of them is on "Shark Tank" and will appreciate her experience with Nanoly and will understand her desire to create other tech startups.
b) The two gay guys on the panel will appreciate her trendy, non-pageanty style, which really sets her apart from the crowd.
c) Deidre Downs is smart, a doctor, and not a typical Southern Pageant patty. So I think she will see Crystal as a soulmate. (Heck, she was Veena's bridesmaid. And she has a great, dry sense of humor.)
d) Joshua Bell is a violinist and apparently a ladies' man, so I think he will go for any hottie with a classical talent - which pretty much narrows it down to Crystal and Miss MN.
e) And as for the pro basketball player - well Crystal looks pretty tall in 5-inch heels and in pointe shoes, so he might consider her dating material.

And that, in a nutshell, is how she can win. It may sound a little lowbrow (like dating the b-ball player), but sometimes, that's how celebrity panels work ... I think.
