One reason I believe why so many Canadian high schoolers leave Canada for american universities is the lack of attention by Canadian university coaches. Yes there are definate exceptions like Dave Scott-Thomas at Guelph and Dennis Farrel at Windsor, who go after the athletes and then actually deveolop them, but relativly speaking the coaches are not going after the Canadian talent and showing them the opportunities that Canadian universities can offer. Let me say this when i was leaving high school I had letters from probably 75 american schools and had coaches calling me on the phone. I wasn't a Murray Link or Jay Cantin and I was still getting this attention. How many letters did I get from Canadian coaches...zero!! I'm from London and I never ever talked to the coach at Western. I mean how hard would it have been for the coach to invite me to lunch to talk about the opportunities or even invite me to his office. Yes I wanted to attend an American University on Athletic Scholarship, but there are many kids who end up at shitty little no name schools in america who would have been better off staying at home, or would they have? Other than Guelph and Windsor where else can you go. Yes this is an Ontario point of view and I know UBC and University of Victoria in BC are quality institions, but it seems like other than the big name coaches like Marek, Farrel and Scott-Thomas, many coaches in Canada are not really doing such a great job.
