Yes. GAFF did have a great reputation. I mean, we were mentioned as a contender in Time's Man of the Year last year, nominated for a Pulitzer for the badfic reviews. I heard that Bush was going to ask some of the long time posters to negotitate the Israeli/Palestinen (sp) conflict until he heard we got TOS'd off a free board.

Geez. It's a freaking MESSAGE BOARD.

That said-the reason I come to GAFF is to read about badfics and to read the comments people make about badfics. I don't particularly feel that we should organize groups to flame bad authors-with the exception of the nutjobs that write Anne Frank furry fic and that chick who wrote the Mengle romance.


The board seemed to be going lately to delibrately stir up the hornet's nest and start flame wars.

I mean, I don't mind duking it out (or watching from the sidelines, usually) with the authors, friends, and sockpuppets that come to the board to defend their fics. I didn't like it when the members of the messageboards seemed to form gangs to inflict justice on the authors of badfics (with the exceptions noted above.)

But--it's just a messageboard. I don't doubt that people here have formed friendships with each other. But all messageboards evolve. As places on the net grow more popular the original meaning of boards, the cozyness, changes.

Calling names and picking on Heywood and the people who are chums with him isn't going to magically return the board to the state in which you think we once were. What it will do is start a flame war amoung the board regulars.

I'd like to see GAFF focus on finding and snarking on badfic as it once did. I vote for a website and a chatroom and a messageboard. I'd be willing to donate a small amount of money for a stable envirnoment in the same way I support sluggy.com. I'd also support a small bit of moderation-a gentle hand can nudge things in the right direction.

And someone needs to take a happy pill and apologize to Heywood.
