Subject: Miles Teg: an interesting type of prescience
In reply to: AntiPaul 's message, "What is Teg? What will he become in Book 7?" on 20:11:43 05/11/03 Sun

So, one who has the ability of prescience can see the past, present and future flowing past, the past already fixed, the present determining itself constantly and the future, constantly changing with respect to the determinations of the present, and itself flowing back to become the present. Yes, I absolutely realize that the previous sentence makes no sense.

Basically, prescience is the ability to see time. So, consider how something could be hidden from prescient view, by comparing it to the much better-known ability to see light. One can imagine how something could be hidden from a persons vision if light could be directed in such a way to bend around the object and continue its course so that the eye sees what is behind the object, rather than seeing the object itself. I suppose that the previous sentence may or may not make sense. Just consider the idea: light bends around an object, so you can't see it. So, no-ships might be rendered invisible to prescience by the bending of time around them, so that one who sees time can't discern that there is anything there.

Miles Teg's ability is different. Rather than being able to SEE time, he can actually FEEL it. He is so comfortable with time at the local level that he can actually make his mind and body work within very incredibly short periods of time; he can actually slow down time with respect to himself, though at a high energy cost.

Now, with his ability to actually FEEL the flow of time, rather than just see it, he would easily sense an anomoly in its flow where it's bending around a no-ship.

As for the possibility of a return of the machines, it's very likely that these machines would have prescience like that in the machines used to navigate through fold space, and it's also very likely that they would be using no-ship technology. This presents a huge problem for the survival of humanity, because the machines can see them as little glowing dots all over the universe, while remaining completely invisible to their prey. But, with the Siona genes making humans invisible to this vision, and now with Teg's ability to expose the no-ships, the human race just might have a fighting chance. Yay!
