While admittedly the Dukes' playing Penn State will not carry the stature of an opponent such as Duke, Villanova (who owes us a home game from way back, as I recall) or Ohio St., I view it as a positive step in improving the Dukes' non-conference schedule. Even though PS is not a b-ball power in the Big 10, the addtion of a team to the schedule from a conference that has an RPI rating higher than the A-10's, is generally an improvement over playing a team from a conference with an historically low RPI rating, such as the NEC. While not all of these alumni are die-hard PS B-ball fans, the opportunity to see PS play in the Burgh will certainly serve as an attraction for approximately 1,500 Penn Staters to attend a game at the Palumbo. Obviously the records of both the Dukes and PS prior to their game will have a big influence on the attendance. Lastly, the geographical proximity of the schools and PS's former membership in the A-10 would suggest that a home and home series is a good fit.

Well, let's at least see what kind of interest the series will generate before we put a negative label to it.

PSU's RPI ( 194 ) from last year would be lower than the RPI of 6 of our ( 2009-10 ) non-con opponents and be higher than 7 of our non-con opponents. Generally speaking the RPI's of top teams in the lower level conferences ( Iona , Fairfield, Sam Houston St. ) would be better than the RPI's of bottom feeders in power conferences (i.e. Indiana, Iowa, PSU )due to the way RPI is calculated.
