Opening with a D-2 Opponent -- Phoenix Rising, Monday, November 15, 04:20:20pm
As you know, we got stuck playing a D-2 opponent for our home opener. It was reported the reason for this was that St. Francis dropped us at a late date from their schedule creating an opening that we could not fill with a Division 1 opponent. (Although, if I recall, the Dukes knew about St. Francis early this summer.) Saint Louis is the only other A-10 school that has a D-2 school on their schedule (although it's not their home opener).

When I took a look at scores from around the country this past weekend, I noticed that about 60 other Division 1 teams opened at home with a D-2 or D-3 opponent. Here's a sampling of some of the teams that opened with a D-2 school - Hofstra, Winthrop, Radford, High Point, Akron, Army, Liberty, Marshall, Savannah St., Delaware St., North Carolina Central, etc. I would have thought that all of these teams would be looking for a D-1 game, but it seems to be more important to them to open up the season at home.

It looks to me the Dukes had 3 choices: 1) open up at home with a D-2 opponent; 2) open up at home with a D-1 opponent by paying the opponent to come into Palumbo - another buy game; or 3) starting with an away game with an opponent who gives you a home game next year.

What are your thoughts on the scheduling options? What would you have done as the Dukes coach/AD?

- We also were going to play Portland but the deal fell through. Given the circumstance I would have gone with the D2 school as well. Switching gears, a friend of mine asked if TJ could be the next Bill Zoph. I thought about that, and although freshman were not eligible back then, and Bill was left handed, in one respect his hustle, leadership, and drive to win could be a comparison.         I thought that both Greg & Ron understood the local angle & agreed to play SFU home & home. Looking at SFU's non-conf home games (Drexel, Bucknell and Colgate this year), the Dukes would usually be the highest ranked team to go into Stokes every other year. It seemed to be good for SFU and a nice gesture on the Dukes' part. I think SFU was looking for a big check from Duquesne rather than a return visit. And with the late date cancellation or ultimatum from SFU, I don't think the Dukes wanted to pay another 300+ RPI team to come here (already have Northwestern St. and Norfolk St.). - I would start Saunders, Clark, Monteiro, Johnson and McConnell. RMU started 3 guards and 2 forwards against St. Peter. Tallest starter is 6' 6''. Peggau is prone to foul trouble and RMU with a smallish team would probably get Peggau into foul trouble. I would use Talley, Jones and Marhold off the bench and limit Peggau's minutes I have nothing against Peggau but I don't think he would match up well with RMU. My only gripe about last night's game is what happen to the defense in the second half? I know it is natural to let up a little with a big lead.

Colin Dunlap said nice things about Alan Robinson, the AP reporter who is responsible for those Duquesne stories in the Seattle newspapers and other major media outlets across the country. Alan always finds good stuff.

Reminded me of the days when the press room at halftime of Dukes games was a place of awe and wonder for me as a budding journalist. The local media - a young Phil Axelrod, the veteran Russ Franke, the sports editors (Pat Livingston, Phil Musick), the TV guys, and the occasional visit by the legends (Myron Cope) - creating a nice buzz and intelligent sports conversation. Mostly I just enjoyed listening and learning as a young guy, especially when Cope was holding court.

And as a Jersey guy, it was fun for me when Rutgers was in town and the local (Star-Ledger) guys were in the Civic Arena.

One of my favorite memories was when some guy from one of the papers "in the sticks" gave me a tongue lashing because I had let out an "Oh, yeah!" after a great play by the Dukes once. The guy - he was about 30 years old - lectured me for five minutes on "having decorum" on the sideline. As he was winding down, one of the veterans walked over to him and said, "Hey Dave, lighten up. The kid's still a student. Let him enjoy the games. He has plenty of time to turn into an old fart like you after he graduates."

Also, Dave Mackall had a great quote by RE on Joel Wright. While I know the guys who cover the Dukes could give a flying crap less about anything I write, Mackall "answered" the question I had the other night about Joel Wright: "You've got to understand your role," Everhart said. "If you don't play the way we want you to play, if you don't do the things your taught in practice, you're going to have to sit and watch until you understand what to do."

On top of that, I want to say again how highly I thought of the coverage in the Duke. Great stories, great headlines. Great quotes from the players.

I feel pretty well-prepared for today's game. I expect the Dukes to come out running, and to do so until the final buzzer. Billy Clark will have a career day. TJ and Mike Talley will dazzle. Andre Marhold will be a monster. BJ will bring the crowd to its feet. Dukes will win 103-51.

Penn State just got commits from TWO 6'11"players who are rated very good. Penn St is football-I love how Pitt is jealous of them and how Pitt football inthe Big Least is weak. Per the A-10 Board
Apparently three of our players (unnamed) have been suspended for the first two games of the season (Gardner Webb and South Carolina State). With Charles Dewhurst and KJ Sherrill being injured and Luka Voncina still potentially ineligible, that leaves us with 5 scholarship players available.

To make matters worse, our first two games are in two consecutive days.

Neither opponent is particularly strong, but having only 5 players and one walkon (maybe 2) that can play, this is going to be a challenge

- Unfortunately the women's volleyball team lost to St Louis, 3-1, last evening. The scores of all sets were very close. This is the team's 2nd loss to St Louis and will likely preclude its finishing in as high as 2nd place in the regular season. Next week the team will close the regular season by hosting GW, La Salle, & Charlotte. The Dukes beat all three teams in their away matches; however, the wins over GW and Charlotte were both by a 3-2 margin. Let's win all three, ladies!         Nothing wrong with expectations TMH. I tend to view my expectations as neither "high" nor "low" but "realistic." I am able to put my fandom aside and see the holes in the roster and holes in particular players games. This team should have a "goal" to make the NCAA tourney but it's a bit unrealistic for the fans to have an "expectation" that they will. Observations from tonight -- VBC, Saturday, October 30, 10:33:17pm
LaRoche is low level competition. I would say about the level of the top grade intramural players from when I was in school in the mid-70s. We should double the score on them.

I haven't seen any stats but I doubt we hit half of our free throws. If we don't improve immediately it will be a disappointing season.

I was impressed by all of the freshman. TJ was best, followed by Mike Talley, Jerry Jones then Joel Wright. If Wright would have hit his free throws I'd have graded him higher than Jones. But all played well.

Bill Clark played very well. Just the kind of performance that I had hoped for from him. He took a good first step towards a fine senior season.

I'm disappointed in Damian. A 3 game disciplinary suspension is not what I expect from a senior captain.

TJ and Mike might be the best pair of guards to arrive on the Bluff together since OJ and Yunnie.

Shortly after TJ verballed a former Dukes player who had seen many of his HS games told me that he'd never make it as an A-10 player. WRONG! TJ has excellent court sense and showed great defense tonight. Granted, it wasn't close to D-1 competition, but he did all you could have expected on D tonight and then some.

TJ's shot release is a bit low for my liking, but then again so was BB's.

The new seats are okay.

Foul shooting stunk tonight.

No direct access from the premium seats to press row due to the new railing. This makes it harder for me to annoy Ray, JD and the beat writers. I don't like it.

Once again, no sisters on the cheerleading squad. Has there been a minority cheerleader of any ancestory in the 21st century? When was the last time we had a minority cheerleader?

The problems with the new scoreboard must be resolved before the next exhibition game. As of now it's like putting a thirteen inch TV on top of your 50 inch HD TV.

Did I mention that our free throw shooting was awful?

  - CLK - The "Problem", to my eyes at least, with our guys and free throws is largely mechanical. Some of our better players will just not be good free throw shooters ( 75% or higher ) due to their technique. I'm guessing the coaches will not covert BJ, DS, EE ( to a lesser degree ), AM, RP, JW or DT to 75% shooters from the line. Heck, I'd settle for 70%.         Not to belabor the point but ... By all accounts the players practice free throws constantly. Whether they are practicing with proper fundamentals - I'm not sure. The in game results are what they are. Maybe this year, BJ and DS, in particular, will improve enough to pick up more of of those "Gift Points" from the line to materially improve the W-L record.   - Good suggestion shushurara, Magee was a great teacher of the fundamentals of the game such as free throw shooting, taking care of the ball, and playing sound defense. His record speaks for itself. It amazes me that Everhart as a former guard himself hasn't gotten these guys to improve their techniques on the line. Maybe it's tiime to bring someone on board who can get these guys to hit 70% of their foul shots. A 10% improvement could mean the differnce between a 16-17 win season and a 20 plus win season. Noah Cottrill has been suspended indefinitely from our team for conduct unbecoming of a Mountaineer,� said Hugginsin a school statement.

The 6-foot-3, 195-lb guard attended Logan (WV) High School in his senior season and won the Evans Award as West Virginia�s top boys high school basketball player. Cottrill committed to the Mountaineers as a sophomore while attending Poca (WV) High School. He also spent a season at Mountain State Academy before finishing at Logan last season.

Cottrill was a member of a four-player incoming freshman class that has nearly evaporated before the first game of the 2010-2011 season. Mountain State Academy big man David Nyarsuk failed to qualify and enrolled at Mountain State University, an NAIA school. Darrious Curry was medically disqualified based on a medical condition and will not play basketball this season. With Cottrill now suspended indefinitely only 6-foot-10 freshman Kevin Noreen, a late addition after being released from his letter of intent with Boston College, remains active with the team of the scholarship freshman.
