Binghamton University, the Dukes opponent on Nov. 23rd in North Carolina (O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic), dismissed 6 players, including star guard Emanual "Tiki" Mayben and American East Conference scoring leader, D J Rivera. Mayben was kicked off the team following his arraignment for cocaine distribution. Talk about troubles for a college basketball program! Click here for article. Duquesne to host opening rounds of 2012 NCAA Tournament

Sources told the Post-Gazette today that Duquesne University, and the soon-to-be-completed Consol Energy Center, has been selected as a host school for first and second round NCAA mens' basketball tournament games for the 2012 season.

Details will be finalized later today.

  - Depends on how many games you play at the site. If you play three or more I believe, you can not. I could be wrong about the number. Well, we haven't made NCAAs yet.         Theoretically both could play there. Different regions play at first round sites since the NCAA developed the "pod" format. DU could be in West and Pitt in East and still play at arena. If the NCAA were to ship out us out and keep Pitt at home (which could happen), I would be extremely angry. Also you can have this advantage and be a lower seed. - Does anybody know if the new arena will have its own basketball floor? During the NCAA Regionals that were held at Mellon, the Duquesne floor was taken there to be played on.   - Bilgy, as I recall, having Duquesne's floor transported to the Arena for use during the tournament was a choice, not a necessity. - I really don't like the idea much. In 2012 I expect to be making our 3rd trip in row to the NCCAA's. Hosting a tournament takes a great deal of time and effort for the ath. dpt. staff, especially for the weekend. - I think this is great. Last two times around, we lousy coaches/lousy teams/lousy AD with very little admin. support. now we had a good AD/Coach with a great team--this will be a good thing...might even make some extra $$$ for the athletic dept, etc. I dont think the host school can play at a site they are hosting plus I think the dukes would have to be a higher seed. if they get in the tourney as a 12 seed i wouldnt be surprised to see them shipped out west....   - cause pitt sells out every home basketball game and gets 50000+ for football games plus the extra money they make being in a BCS conference.. also, being in a BCS conference, they already get alot of exposure on ESPN, etc... - Before people accuse me of not being proud of DU, let me say this. We hosted before. We got little to no benefit from doing it. We now find out we can't play at the site. I am all for civic pride once we have some NCAA appearances under our belts. But to spend resources on this that could be better spent on any one of the other varsity sports is foolish to me.         I am imagine it takes a lot of staff time and effort. I don't know a dollar figure and neither do you. I am not interested in getting into an argument. I rather see the name Duquesne in the NCAA tournament in any sport before civic pride and our name on the floor.     - I read many newspapers, the Beaver County Times\Allegheny times circulation is in Duquesne's back yard. Has a daily circulation of 40,000 plus it is online and owned by Calkins Media, which owns 8 newspapers and television stations. So this tiny article can be picked up by a lot of media.         The major tenant is the Penguins, this is a publicly paid for facility, I am sure whether we hosted a tournament or not they would allow us to play some games there, I am sure they would even allow us to play all their games there. A83 is right, you got to fix your own ship before you start fixing others. I went to the last tournaments , I had a great time. - I know it is a bit disappointing that we are again in a position to help Pitt play at home for Rounds 1 and 2; but you need to look at the big picture; we are building a relationship with the management of Consol Energy Arena that may be quite beneficial to our program in the future.     - not arguing with you, but I bet their would be more of an emphasis on quality of the internet broadcasts if more than 10 people bought/paid for them.       - I agree with you totally here. I go to the games so this is not as much of a problem for me. But making your normal product as attractive as possible will bring in fans. Starts with winning which they have done. Then make everything else the best it can be. A very low priority is set on the quality of the internet. - This whole NCAA thing is eerily similar to the 1st time we hosted to the NCAA. Carroll took us to NIT. Times were good & everyone thought we turned the corner. The AD at the time was respected. Everyone was very proud, DU was picked to host the tournament. Before the tourney came to town, the Coach was fired. The program heading downward again. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it The focus of the Ath. Depart should be bringing ALL DU sports to the top, with an emphasis on BB and football.       - A83, we know that the 1997 and 2002 games were sold out well in advance. Dukes season ticket holders received rights to purchase tickets to these events. Thus, there will be an extra benefit to Dukes season ticket holders in 2011-2012. Let's go back to 97 and 02; the Dukes sucked and the Athletic Dept. had no marketing to speak of. If the Dukes continue with their winning ways and the Dukes are properly marketed, this could/will result in extra season tickets being sold. MoJo, Pookie, or as I prefer Pound for Pound, whichever you prefer, 5'6 2010 point guard Maurice Jones of Saginaw Arthur Hill has narrowed his decisions to Duquesne and St. Bonaventure. His next two weekends are planned, as he'll make official visits to St. Bonaventure this weekend and the following weekend he'll visit Duquesne. Jones told me that he plans to make a decision soon after those visits and it seems to be that one of those two Atlantic-10 schools will be his choice. Both programs had assistant coaches in Michigan during the first weekend of the NCAA's open period. (THIS WAS POSTED 9.10.09)

-Maurice Jones, a 5'7 PG from Saginaw, MI/Arthur Hill got his first high major offer today as USC offered him tonight. Jones will take a official visit this week to USC. Kevin O'Neil of USC came to watch Jones in an open gym today in Saginaw. Jones is the #2 PG in Michigan by BOTB, and a Top 5 player in Michigan's 2010 class. Jones is also looking at St. Bonaventure and Duquesne.

Honestly, I hope he goes somewhere other then Duquesne (or any other A10 school). He too good and I don't want SBU facing a loading Dukes team with another weapon.

I noticed that ESPN has finally graded T.J. McConnell at a very respectable 89. The write-up was highly encouraging and seems to f it into RE's style of play to a T. The only negative was his size . My sincere gratitude to Mr. Amodio and all the Duquesne officials for hosting the University of Pittsburgh appearance in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
It is sad that Duquesne will not be eligible to play in the NCAA tournament at the Consol Energy Center because it is the host school. It will be ironic, that should Duq. somehow make the tournament, they will have to play somewhere in Idaho or one of the other seven sub-regional sites, while we enjoy the beautiful confines of Consul and virtual home court advantage.
Under NCAA tournament rules, Pitt would be eligible to play games at the Consol Energy Center in the 2012 tournament as long as it does not play more than three games there during the regular season. The NCAA also is more likely to place the Panthers in Pittsburgh if they earn a high seed.

Coach Jamie Dixon sends his sincere thanks also.

In 1959, I remember looking out of Rockwell Hall to the lower hill and watching the Civic Arena go up. The big thing was its fold-under dome. Two questions: Will the Consol Arena have a removable dome, and will the Mellon Arena be demolished?

        Realistically, Gattusso was a steal for this level program. We caught him on the way up. The list of replacements for him was nice, but I didn't see any names that blew me away. Schmitt was a coordinator under Gattusso, and a successful one at that. He was not a bad choice. The Dukes have had some bad luck with injuries this year (QB, TE), the line is still maturing, the defense needs some size, and I think we need one RB to step up and take the job. Pitt's only returning starter has just been sidelined for a minimum of 8 weeks with another broken foot. With that loss, their squad will start the season with 5 different starters than last year. It remains to be seen as to whether he will make it back at the 8 week threshold.

With the loss of Gilbert Brown and now potentially Jermaine Dixon(and even if he does play, he will be severely rusty), has this game in any way turned into a must-win for us should we want to achieve the goals of this season?

The Dukes looked like they didn't belong on the same court as the Panthers in the 1st game, losing 9-25. But they played like a completely different team in the following four games, winning the fifth game, 15-9. The attendence was listed as 219, & it was a loud crowd - plenty of cheering for both teams. The Dukes (7-1) next opponent is Michigan St. (6-0), ranked 20th. I am among those who are extremely upset over the decision to give up our home game against Pitt this year. I agree with those who say we are giving away a home game. If the basketball team is doing so well that we can afford to give up our home court advantage then they obviously do not need money from me. I will continue to buy season tickets but I will not donate an extra penny to the program for the next 5 years. You guys in the athletic department know who I am. Don't waste the postage in mailing me anything to solicit donations or waste your breath calling me on the phone. The answer will be no and I will surely remind you why the answer is no if you do call.

Today in the cafeteria RE and the assistant coaches were eating lunch with TJ McConnell and another recruit who appeared to be a 6' guard. I wasn't sure if anyone might know of another player we would be going after for next year. Looking at the espn recruiting website, the only other player mentioned is Jay Harris(an espnu top 100 player). Im not sure if that was him or what are chances are of signing Harris, but even though what we might need in the near future is more depth at the forward position, I think being able to land a top 100 player would be a remarkable signing and further show the great strides this program has made in only a few years.

I'm disappointed that we've thrown in the towel on having a "home court advantage" at the Mellon Arena. When that WAS our home court, and I realize this was a generation ago, I don't remember Pitt fans having such an advantage there. And as I recall, the great NIT game of 1980 seemed to be a pretty even split from where I was sitting.

There are so many ways to control the crowd. Give Pitt 1,000 tickets, and tell them that's all they and their fans get. Hand them out to as many students as want to go. Offer them to alumni through a special e-mail. Organize some alumni and R&B Crew members to do a telethon to solicit interest among local alumni. Hand some out to HS seniors who have sent in their applications. Give season ticket holders a 2-for-1 or 3-for-1 or 10-for-1 deal.

But do something positive, in the spirit of the Third Alternative.

Saying we have surrendered home court because we're afraid Pitt fans will beat us to the tickets, that just tells me that as fans, we're not ready for a big-time program. Does anyone honestly think Ron Everhart is afraid to play them at the Arena?

- I have been to around 200 Duquesne games at the Civic Arena, and in the 60's and 70's it was a great venue with large crowds. - ED: I understand your view but you are missing the fact that we have, through neglect over the years, ceded Pittsburgh area BB fans to Pitt. I recall attending Steel Bowl games vs Pitt in the late 60's early 70's when the crowd was overwhelmingly DU, when you could literally count the number of Pitt students in their section...when UCLA was brought in because they would face the Dukes in the final (which a classy Buzz Ridl thwarted in the first round).   - To second what Mulder is saying ED...things most certainly aren't what they were. I personally know a professor, who upon getting tickets for the Pitt game two years ago, brought Pitt fans as their guests (fortunately I didn't have the guy then or afterward). The atmosphere around campus and 5th Ave that day should be popping, students should WANT to be a part of it. But, you're saying there are 5K post grad students at DU?       - Yes, the undergrad population is just under or around 5,000 right now. My experience with students at DU over the past few years as the R&B crew was taking off was that many were not BB fans or followed PItt. It would be great to get that kind of excitement going at the arena and I hope it has changed enough to do that. One advantage at the arena vs AJP would be that they could keep the students together.     - Keep �commuter� alumni in mind, as well. There are so many of us who work in the city but live in the �burbs. We may not all be season tix holders but I�m sure many could be coaxed into sticking around town for an evening if there is a nice food and game package offered. Use AJP to gather a big group (dare I say a few thousand) for refreshments and then head over to Mellon for the game. Agreed that the atmosphere in the entire area should be intense that night.
