        Disagree. First, if the A10 knew we were courting the Patriot League, we'd be kicked out immediately. Secondly, we can be competitive in the A10. No need to take a step downward when you can be competitive where you are. I said it before when it was discussed...to me joining the Patriot League seemed the equivalent of giving up and saying we can't compete in the A10.         Please don't misunderstand -- the Patriot League schools are all, in my opinion, outstanding schools. I have nothing but respect for them and the conference itself. But DU didn't help create the ECBL (the forerunner to the A-10 and its forerunner, the Eastern Eight) for academics, it did so for basketball. I know the A-10 for the most part carries the "mid-major" label, but on a good year, its top teams can play with most anyone. -- El Duque, Tuesday, July 15, 03:12:05pm

Anything you do in the face of the public has a 50-50 chance to be perceived either in a positive or negative way. DU, I think, is in a position where it can only go up. Even with all the positives of the Dr. D., GA and RE era, we still carry the BC era, the shootings and the lawsuits like a lead weight around the dangly bits. - No Dukes played in game 1. A.J. played well in the 2nd game, he might be the quickest guy playing in the league. Had some nice drives and good assists. 3rd game had Achara, sherwood and Duty on 1 team and Evans, Patterson and Newton on the other.Evans showed good handle and penetrated more than the last time I saw him. Achara had 3 blocks, and hit a 3. one of the blocks on Sam Young. Sherwood hit 2 threes and scored on a couple of drives. Pattersons shot wasn't dropping and Duty and Newton didn't do much. Dave Ricketts, a member of Duquesne's 1955 national championship team, has passed away at age 73.

Steve Blass just called him "the best major league coach I've ever been around."

Dave, like his brother Dick, played major league baseball and later coached in the Cardinals organization for many years.

I had an encounter with Dave Ricketts years ago at Three Rivers Stadium. I was sitting in the centerfield seats with three friends of mine on a weeknight when the Bucs were playing the Cards and less the 10,000 people were in the stands. Andy Van Slyke hit a home run to right field which landed between the home run fence and the stadium wall. A few moments later here comes Dave Ricketts. He had gotten up from his seat in the Cards bullpen down the right field foul line and retrieved the home run ball. He calls out, "Here you go," to my friend Betsy who was seated next to the siderailing and tossed the ball up to her. And as fate would have it Betsy was a maniacal Van Slyke fan who couldn't believe her good fortune. But that was just Dave Ricketts being Dave Ricketts.

A couple basketball notes ... WOMEN'S BASKETBALL.

The Duchesses have named former player Carmen Bruce as an assistant basketball coach. Us old guys remember Carmen's dad Kirk as a former (E-S-)Pitt player.

Former Duchesses coach Dan Durkin was named an assistant at Temple (women's team). Best of luck to him. He brought the single best basketball player of the Colleary Era, Korie Hlede, to the Bluff (sorry Mike James and Wayne Smith).

Dan will end up with another head coaching gig soon.

- Even with Korie in 97-98 the Duchesses were 19-9. Many of Durkin's players' performance noticeably dropped in their sen. years. Parents of a current player told me the team had soured on him long before his final season had ended. Inexplicably he failed to recruit even one of the many outstanding Oakland Cath players. While he did post 5 or 6 winning seasons, he couldn't get the Duchesses in the NIT, NCAA or even the A-10 finals. Only by comparison to the Dukes' men's team did Durkin's record look somewhat respectable. For whatever reason, he could not get the players he needed to compete consistently in the A-10. Pittsburgh Pro-am July 9 -- BJH, Thursday, July 10, 12:09:41am
Only Aaron, Duty, Sherwood and Milovic showed tonight for the Dukes. Kieron Achara also played in the second game.

In the first game Aaron had 8 points and had 10 in the second game of the night. He had the task of guarding Levance Fields in the first game and more than held his own.

Sherwood led all the Dukes with 18 points(unofficial). He was successful in getting to the basket all night.

Duty knocked down a couple of shots and plays solid defense when there really is none in the league.

Milovic really didn't see the ball because Tyrell Biggs of Pitt would try to go one on one every time he touched the ball. Aleks didn't have any points by my count.

Kieron looked good going up against Dwight Miller and Biggs from Pitt, and actually blocked maybe 4-6 shots and had 6 points.

Ron was there tonight and was mingling with some fans. I hope some other posters can make it out over the next couple of weeks, it's really worth your while.

  - While he didn't shoot tonight, he did last Wednesday and he can really shoot the rock. He will be a solid contributor for us this season imo. He is a legit 6'7" 230, and is a very muscular build. Hello all and again, my deepest gratitude to all for the support at the Pro AM League this summer.

I received a e-mail from the Greentree Sportsplex and the Greentree Police concerning parking at the venue that I wanted to share with all that reads as follows:

For all fans that will be attending the Pro AM basketball event at the Greentree SportsPlex on Monday and Wednesday nights please be aware Greentree Police will monitor the parking lots during these busy times. Parking along Iron City drive is strictly prohibited.

If there are no empty parking spots located at the SportsPlex, fans will be allowed to park in the Vision Financial parking lot, as well as the Radisson Parking lot, which is located next to the bubble entrance, and walk up the steps.

The Greentree Police will tag, ticket, and tow any violators parking along Iron City Drive.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

New Arena for Fordham -- Bronx, Thursday, July 03, 05:56:43pm
Some Fordham employees from the Bronx told me of a plan to rennovate the basketball arena. Rose Hill Gym will be rennovated ala St. Joseph's Alumni Gym. The arena's roof is to be raised and an upper deck is to be added over all four sides. Struts to support the second decking will be slanted and most likely anchored outside the present walls. No word on when this is to begin, or what it will cost.

Tonight marked my first look at Aleks Milovic, and I was impressed. In limited minutes(bad coaching), Aleks was 4-5 from beyond the arc, and hung with Young from Pitt.

Shawntez Patterson knocked down 7 triples and was active on the glass.

B.J. Monteiro was very good defensively and chipped in a bit on offense.

Eric Evans played the point well for his team, when the coach took him out the team was lost.

Chase Robinson played a bit and made some nice drives but didn't finish.

AJAX,and Sherwood each played in two games and looked good.

No Bolding tonight, but seeing him last week he can clearly hang with the big boys.

- Nice to see we have some kids that look like they can shoot. They should get some opportunities with A. J. driving and passing it out when the defenders have to help. Sherwood also looked good when I was there and he,s played decent when he's been in the last 2 years. He seems to be improving, maybe he can get a couple extra minutes a game this year. Eyebrows raised when Duquesne University offered McConnell a scholarship last summer when he was just 5-foot-8, 125 pounds. Since then, McConnell has added some weight and now stands just a shade under 5-11, and his verbal commitment to coach Ron Everhart and the Dukes remains firm.

"I don't care if Pitt, North Carolina and Duke all come in and offer tomorrow. He's going to Duquesne," Tim McConnell said.

That's what Ron told him according to Aaron in todays P-G. Aarons playing really well at Greentree and I'm expecting him to have a fine senior season. He and Bolding should be a nice combo at the guard spots. A.J. says he's been working with Duty on his jumpshot. If he gets that straightened out he could put up some numbers this year.

- After watching all of these videos, I was struck on how well the Dukes played against Oakland (you can spot this game because the area inside the 3 point circle is painted black). There were a number of clips from this game in the player's videos; the unselfish ball movement, good decisions, defense, shooting, etc. Wish we could have bottled this and used it in Februrary/March against the A-10. - I don't agree. David may not be a starter, but they really need his size when there is foul trouble. He played better at the start of the season and should develop. He may be a role player. - I think Grote would be able to play, especially if he could play the 3 spot his natural position. Scott played the 4 and sometimes the 5 when Achara was hurting. I remember him looking like a kid trying to defend Aaron Gray aat the Pete. Scott shot well at the start of the season and I have to believe the wear and tear of banging with the big boys had a lot to do with his shooting woes the rest of thr year. - Theis is a great young man. I believe he loves being at Duquesne and would benefit from a degree from DU. But his playing time will be extremely limited. He needs to develop his outside shot, ball handling and quickness so he can play the 2 or 3 and use his height to shoot over smaller defenders.
