- Here is a question. Several A10 teams are having closed scrimmages with other D1 schools this weekend. I know as a fan hungry for basketball exhibition games feeds the hunger, but would DU be better off holding a closed scrimmage with say Providence or Akron, rather than playing La Roche ?         How do you gain confidence playing against air? Confidence is gained by holding your own against strong competition. This is not a young team.         Again, Freshman shouldn't start off with BE teams. It's a huge jump from HS to College. Ease in the first couple. I think the freshman have more confidence than they did before last night's game. My opinion. On another note- Dukes have guys in every position that are able to push each other harder in practice as compared to last year's team. Very important. Plus, I am a big guy, not many bigger than me at the AJPC, and I like my premium seats. I enjoyed the extra space. My knees arent knocking people out in front of me. Doug Anderson 6-6 218 from Mott Comm College in Michigan is the Dukes 1st verbal commitment according to the Pgh Trib's staff and wire reports.I cant link the story though.

        Yes, I know that, hence my emphasis on the word SECOND. Look, for all I know the guy is a scum as you describe, but I don't see anywhere where he said anything about them "not going through" him. If he is mentoring the kid (as a good coach should do) then I see nothing wrong with him saying, "son, there may be a school that's a better fit for you, maybe you should visit some other places just to be sure."         ...and just to be clear, I think it's possible that not a single person in this story did anything "wrong." The coaches recruited and got a verbal from the kid (that's not binding, BTW), Mackall got the info, followed up with the current coach who seemed to confirm it (miscommunication), and the current coach went to the kid and said "I think you should be more patient before making a final decision."         Slim, that quote is in the blog that is linked above. It did strike me a bit funny too. No offense to the coach, but Duquesne is dealing with the player and his family, and that is how it should be. Unless we have violated some type of NCAA recruiting rule, which doesn not appear to be the case, then he is off base. And if he steers the kid away from DU because his ego is out of joint, that word will get around among the coaches too. What's important, all the way around: Do the right thing. - A little more information on the injury. According to the Trib Article "He had been recovering from a stress fracture in the foot, which he developed during preseason workouts". - In the write-up on the fanfest, it was noted but was really downplayed. Something along the lines of "Evans played sparingly as he is nursing a stress fracture in his foot." When I first read it, I thought "that doesn't sound good" but then figured if he was playing in a srimmage the medical staff must not be that worried about it. 8 weeks is a long time, but getting him back for conference play is important. - Entering a challenging schedule with two freshman point guards is far from ideal; compound that with the fact that both will be challenged physically due to their slight body types; and this could present a huge problem on the defensive end; hopefully Sean Johnson will be healthy enough to take up some of the slack.   - Both frosh will have to use their quickness, anticipation skills, and quick hands to keep opponents PG from penetrating and breaking down the team defense. The inability to do this in the past has hurt DU and has led to some of the defensive stats ( Points allowed, opponents shooting pctg, 3 pt defense etc ... ) being a bit on the negative side. Here is hoping they play solid, fundamental "D" and keep their man in front of them, box out and refrain from too much "Gambling" for the big play. - I think RE will move Monteiro to SG spot and use TJ and Talley at PG. Peggau and Marhold will be the center by commitee with Saunders at PF and Clark at SF. Once Johnson is healthy, he will be the SG. The PG will be whoever does the best between TJ and Talley. Monteiro goes back to small forward. - The market for 35 year old journeyman guards isn't that great. Injuries could open a spot for him somwhere, but he's obviously close to the end of his career. Quickness was his calling card, and that's the first thing to go as you age. Considering where he came from, he's had a remarkable run, and has made us all proud. - This is a typical example of what is wrong with the NCAA. The let kids come in and play for one year just to get the NBA, they have no intentions of being a student athlete what so ever, and the NCAA does nothing. Now, here is a student who probably stay 4 years more than likely graduate and they make HIM sit out year. Why not help him academically and let him play? - Some quick observations: seats look really Bice and the mix of blue and red was a nice idea. I sat in the cheap red seats and they were definitely nicer than bleachers. The scoreboard is nice but the video didn't see to be HD and there is no score listed on the board. The prep band was moved to one of the side entrances and is no longer in the stands. Nice article in the Trib today about Bill Clark. He seems to be more positive and more focused this season. That is great news, because we really need him to step up and be a leader this year. Listened to the broadcast this a.m. with Greg Linnelli at 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. from fanfest. A recap follows :

First interview was with coach RE. Some interesting observations ( at least to me ) were :

1) He seems genuinely enthused with this group, especially the frosh. He really talked them up ( especially Talley and TJ ). At one point he called TJ "The best passer he ever saw." Hopefully he is correct and TJ is at least as good as Bob Cousy or John Stockton or Majic Johnson ( JUST KIDDING !!! ).

2) He said that it will be a pleasure not having to deal with "some of the issues" that occurred with last years team. The first public confirmation that the chemistry was not ideal.

3) Really praised Damian and Bill C, even admitted that Bill "did not shoot the ball well at times last year". Expects big senior year from both players.

4) Really wants to return to the "Run and gun" style from 2 years ago. Look for shots to go up quickly and fly from everywhere.

5) No real comments on Andre, Sean, BJ, David T. or Rodrigo.

Comments from J. Durham that I found "Interesting" were :

1) He call Damian - "Sanders" and not "Saunders". Gotta work on that as he is the best player on the team. The broadcaster should get the name correct.

2) RE likes this coaching staff as opposed to last years. He is able to recruit much more and trust these guys when he is away.

There were also interviews with Susie M, and Ray G. Both seemed upbeat about hte upcoming season and expect good times to roll on the Bluff.

A-10 Rookie Class And All-newcomer Team

The latest A-10 class, on paper, seems very strong. It has plenty of future starters and several likely stars. It�s mostly guard heavy, at least in terms of immediate impact players. There�s some talented bigmen, but they will need more time to develop.

Below is my All-Rookie Team with other players to watch. I base my picks not on who the most talented players are, but who�s likely to get the minutes to produce right away. Some of the players I left off my list are less likely to get the minutes or might not be physically ready to contribute right away.

Rookie of the Year

Juwan Staten

All-Rookie Team

Ron Roberts (6-7, 205), St. Joseph�s - Former St. John�s recruit is physically capable to be a force inside in his first year. Other Hawks frosh may have more talent, but he fills a huge need.

Juwan Staten (5-11, 189), Dayton � Best point guard recruit in the A-10 since Jameer Nelson. He might not be as good as Jameer in his freshman season, but Staten is ready to start from day one.

T.J. McConnell (6-0, 165) Duquesne � Slightly built combo guard just finds a way to score. And it just so happens that the Dukes badly need a shooting guard with deep range.

Rob Loe (6-11, 235), St. Louis � Billikens� top rated recruit from New Zealand will be thrown into the fire now that Willie Reed is gone. He has the size to compete in the A-10 and is a good outside shooter.

Tyreek Duren (6-0, 180), LaSalle � Top point guard from Philadelphia will probably run the show in his first year. He�s a good all-round athlete and floor leader.

Other freshmen to watch (in no particular order):

Derrick Williams, Richmond - He is a load inside at 270 pounds and could be an answer for the Spiders� rebounding woes.

Jordair Jett, St. Louis - Somebody has to run the offense with Kwamain Mitchell out. Jett, a well regarded recruit, is the only other true point guard on the roster.

Cole Stefan, LaSalle - Late signee from Minnesota might be the best pure shooter in the freshman class. The Explorers need another shooter.

Langston Galloway, St. Joseph�s � High-motor combo guard is very athletic and versatile.

Jay Canty/ Justin Martin/Jordan Latham, Xavier � All three are topnotch recruits. Martin is the deep shooter and Canty the energetic slasher, but the 245-pound Latham might the most ready to make an impact where the Muskies need it most. (Martin still needs NCAA clearance). One of these players is likely to make All-Rookie.

Daryl Traynham, Massachusetts � Small, dribble-drive point guard is likely to start sometime during the season. He�s another member of a fine class of A-10 point guards.

PS: Fordham and St. Bonaventure have plenty of time for newcomers = the Rams upfront and Bona in the backcourt - so there's opportunity there. It's just hard to gauge the quality of their recruits.

Dukes have offered Pat Forsythe of Brunswick Ohio.He is 6'10" 210 and has blown up lately it is hard to find much about him at Rivals and Scout but he has offers from Utah State James Madison Toledo and coaches from Georgetown Ohio State Cincinnati West Virginia an Virginia in to take a look at him in the last week.He just turned 17 in July.He is a shot blocker.May be a sleeper big man we need!!

It was discussed on the A10 Board after the writer started a juvenille thread. It looks like the story has been pulled from Bleacher Report, and the Post deleted from the A10 Board. Looks like someone got to the editor. It was replace by this article on SBU that makes a reference to a post on our board.

It is the burden of the player / HS /JUCO to make sure the paperwork is complete and accurate. The NCAA is also fairly detailed in making sure a course meets the criteria to be considered a "Core requirement". Perhaps they are questioning one of his courses.
