Don't discount the level of improvement you will see out of J Duty. You were all skeptics last year and I remember a post he couldn't play dead in a cowboy movie. Let's see what happens.

- I like Duty, I think he has a place and I think he provides leadership. However, his consistency on the floor is the issue and will likely continue to be. - You cant just look at duty as an individual player while on the court. Its the cohesive/gel aspect that provides team chemistry as a whole. This team has chemistry. I will take that over a few McDonald All Americans anyday. he is a leader. Plus he had some nice clutch shots last year. I like Duty and think he brings a lot to the team. Talk about recruiting nightmares, I just read where John Wall was recently arrested for breaking and entering, and So. Cal. and UCLA recinded their offer to recruit Renardo Sidney after learning of huge red flags regarding questionable family finances and Sidney's father expecting $ from schools. Greetings, Dukes fans. I just thought I'd let you know that Sean Johnson will be visiting Duquesne this weekend. Having followed his recruitment due to Bona's early involvement, I've come to know a few people who are close to the situation. He is an interesting case, as a number of schools have backed off of his recruitment recently, yet solid programs like Nebraska and Duquesne remain. I hope you guys keep him in the A-10. Good luck.

- Coach Schmidt and a few others consider Johnson something of a tweener. He's similar in many ways to current Bona player Malcolm Eleby. Johnson doesn't shoot it well from the perimeter but plays a slashing style in the open court. He's certainly a talented athlete and could develop into a very good A-10 player.     - From what I have read of this kid he is a young Aaron Jackson type player. He is a big athletic guard who plays very tough defense. He can take players off his dribble and can penetrate and draw the defense and kick out to open shooters. This kid supposedly is also a gym rat. Aaron was not a good shooter early but worked hard and developed his shot. We have other good shooters now, and this kid may be the perfect comliment as he develops. IN MEMORIUM OF FRANK MINIOTIS - Basketball player for the Dukes in 1963, 1965 & 1966 (Captain); died on March 23, 2009. -- Always a Duke, Tuesday, April 14, 05:27:51pm
I thought I'd bring to your attention the death of a former Dukes' basketball player and captain on March 23, 2009. I never saw Frank play for the Dukes. I was a senior in high school when Frank was a senior at Duquesne, but I hear he was a very good player. I don't recall seeing any articles about his death on the Dukes' athletic website or any mention of this in the P-G or Tribune sports pages. However, I did pass this info onto the Athletic Dept.

I would hope that some of the older contributors to the basketball forum might add some comments about Frank's contributions to Duquesne athletics. I believe he played for one year with Willie Somerst in 1965.

I knew him as a member of Annunciation Parish (now merged with Nativity to form Incarnation of the Lord Parish) on the Northside. He was a very active volunteer for many activities at the parish and school. He got me to volunteer for several things, including a parish fund-raiser, the Aerobic-a-thon. Frank, Father Jack Nance, & I were the only men participating along with maybe 25-30 women from the parish. We were led by some young and extremely fit woman who taught an aerobics class to several parishioners. Our male egos led us to believe that it would be easy to do the entire 3 hours of aerobics. The three of us were extremely sore for several days following the 3-hour exercise marathon. I believe Father Jack had difficulty saying Sunday Mass following the aerobic-a-thon. I took off work the following Monday because of the extreme pain. As I can recall, Frank had difficulty walking & was hurting for several days as well. Frank and his family moved from the Northside to Wexford at least 15 years ago.

I found Frank to be a great guy and truly a credit to our parish and to Duquesne University. Rest in peace.

- I knew Frank and we shared a class or two. Would say that Frank was a solid player for the Dukes especially his first couple years. The news of his death is a shock. Frank was a laid back kind of guy in the classroom. He was solidly built about 6-3 or 6-2 as I recall and looked like a football player. I saw this article on the A10 Board where Draft Express has forecast Damien Saunders being dafted in the second round next year. After the way he played last year I have no doubt he could be an early exit to the NBA. Enjoy him while you can in a DU uniform. That is another reason to look at recruiting differently.

He played the opponent's tallest player every night, often giving up 4-6 inches in height, played darn near 40 minutes every night, and led the team in rebounds, blocks and steals.         Three 7-footers in the A-10, five total counting non-conference teams. Saunders also faced seven players listed at 6-11, 16 listed at 6-10, and 29 listed at 6-9. Remember, the next tallest kid on the court was Billy Clark at 6-5. The point is, you can NOT say that Saunders "showed up for half the games." Getting down to rug cutting time. The next two weeks will see many kids making their decisions. I think we still have two players that we know of that we have made offers on, and probably some others we don't know. I would bet that Ron has some vists set up for this weekend. I would love to sit in on one of Ron's staff meetings as he looks at his options.

Just in passing has any one heard if the 6'9" kid from Turkey Gokhan Sirin has selected a school. He is one of the kids Ron supposedly has offered. He would be kind of easy to spot if he were visiting this weekend.

What would you guys like to see 'worked on' from our boys during the offseason?

As always, I would like to see some more time in the weight room and I would love it if one of our guys could develop a lethal 10-15ft pull up jumper.

I think we agree that our three point shooting was dramtically improved from the season before(evans, damian, bill, duty, and mel all proved they could hit from downtown), and I think we will get great penetration from eric, mel, and damian, and I know we are all banking on 'big man' play from rodrigo and mike w. If someone could develop a mid range game, watch out!

I really got to know him well when we played together for the freshman basketball team at Bethel Park, and we remained close ever since then. He was always the kid cracking jokes in the locker room and was full of life. If anyone he knew was having a bad day, he always knew the right thing to say to cheer them right back up. He loved Duquesne and appreciated everything in his life, and passed the same message on to others. He will be missed, but there comfort knowing he is in a better place. A 6th floor St. Ann's member forever. May our thoughts and prayers be with him and his family at this time.

        I just saw the discussion about moving to the Scout board. I like the open thread design of the Voy Board. You can scan the threads quickly as opposed to having to open topics. Also, I think there will be some casual posters we will lose if we abandon this site who just will not register. I think we should just monitor this Board a little more aggressively and we can get the "clowns" in line. There are two registration Boards now that are inactive, we should let the market decide.         Some of the posts that could be attributed to clowns came from public computers on the Duquesne campus. If things get out of control again those computers will have to be restricted to 'read only'. The problem with doing that is you inconvienence legitimate users of those computers. - I'd guess one more, but wouldn't be surprised regardless. Remember, Theis went to Mercersberg Academy before coming to DU. Thus, he may be at risk of having some of his credits not transferring should he want to leave. Wouldn't be surprised if one of the frosh left, or if Theis did either. My guess is one leaves. These are not really new rules but a restatement of some of the principals in our rules stated above.

1) Pick a handle and stick with it. There is no more tolerance for multiple changing signatures.

2) While rumors, speculation, and hearsay are part of the fun of this board, it should be noted as such. Statements that read as fact need to provide a link or source to back up the statement.

3) There will be no tolerance for posts intended to "flame". While we welcome spirited discussions, disrespectful, bullish, or otherwise offensive posts in the eyes of the monitors will be deleted. Repeat and you are out.

4) While some off topic discussions are fine, this is a basketball board. There are other boards for political discussions and other topics. Also, Coffee does a great job on his football board (see link above), and Denny and the Rivals site do a good job reporting other DU sports.

5) If you treat people with respect, you will be respected. All of the other rules fall under the category of treat people like you would like to be treated.

This Board (and its predecessor) has been active for almost 10 years. We will not surrender it to Pirates. Please govern yourself accordingly.
