  - Being one of the top players in Michigan, in and of itself doesn't mean that much. Every area has it's up's and downs. I believe Evans will be good, but MSU didn't offer, so let's not get carried away. I like AJ with the ball in his hands.     - Evans was selected to the Michigan Dream Team (top 5 players). The fact that he signed with DU early means we will never know who else may have offered if he would have waited. The question is can he play with the big boys. I think he will prove that he can. AJ was not offered by Pitt and he clearly proved he can hang with their best. We all know that the AJPC will have to be massively renovated eventually. But here are some little things that can be improved until that day comes.

1. Reopen the season ticket lounge:
I was disapointed when they stopped opening that lounge in the one corner on the lower level. It was a great place to socialize with others, enjoy drinks, and catch up on other games on the tvs. There were also nice pictures of former dukes hung on the walls. It would be an actual benefit of buying season tickets.

2. Remove or update the mural inside the bleacher side entrance:
This was really nice when it was first put in. But the fact that only Ron Dokes and some nameless girls basketball player are on is kinda dumb.

3. Take out the metal detectors:
I have no problem with serching bags or any security measure like that. But come on, it feels like your going to visit someone in prison rather than go to a basketball game.

4. Better in-game activities
I have no problem with the traditional t-shirt tosses or even that pizza delivery thing, but when i saw a burrito delevery the next timeout, then it's just plain stupid. Like at PNC Park, they should have a seat upgrade where a pair of people in the cheap seats get to move down to great ones or stuff like that.

5. Do something about the band
I know there was a lot of bickering about this and im not starting anything. But nothing against them they were bad. At least in the past the band cheered and was into the game boosting the atmosphere during holiday breaks. And they could at least learn more than 3 songs.

6. Bring back the duke mascot
I knew we used to have a big-headed cartoony version of him. What ever happened to it? Kids got a kick out of seeing him.

7. Discount Promotions
I know there are people against this on the board but when the team was put in a bad situation with the St. Bona game late on a weeknight, having a BOGO there wouldn't of had hurt.

  - Let the "Big Head" Duke costume continue to hang in the closet. A duke is a real human being, not a bird, fruit, vegetable, color, or cartoon character. Our mascot needed be a caricature of a duke. Why not let the mascot be a student dressed in a black tuxedo with tails, a top hat, & walking stick. This was last done successfully in the mid '70s, I believe. It helps if the the person serving as the mascot can be animated & be a pretty good dancer. I can't make it this week but if anyone is going tonight it looks like no Dukes in the 1st game. 2nd game has Montiero, Milovic,Evans,Robinson and Theis playing against Patterson,Bolding and Newton. I got the schedule off the Pitt site. Evans and Patterson have both played on 2 different teams but I assume they will play for their rostered teams tonite. I think theis has only showed up once.

  - I think it works well at the beginning of the season because teams haven't yet build up the endurance to keep up--they get winded at the 10 min mark in the second half. As the season wears on, we are the ones who suffer as our boys are worn out and their shots are just a bit off (especially 3's) and player control becomes an issue.     - The other reason it works early in the season is because the teams you're playing don't have the depth of most A-10 team and can't go toe tot toe with teams that run.       - The main reason it works early is because our scrubs are probably as talented as the starters on the scrub teams we are playing. Their starters are tired, and our scrubs are fresh. It doesn't work in A10 play because most starters in the A10 are vastly better than our scrubs, and are able to dominate them, tired or not. You don't want Jason Duty trying to guard Stanley Burrell. - My guess is we may see a modified platoon system early as Ron looks to see what works best. It will be interesting to see how the minutes are distributed. You would think that Aaron and Saunders (assuming is ankle is ok) will 25-30 minutes a game. We are short on big men next year who can match up with A10 big guys. Peggau is our biggest player and if he is OK I see him getting 25-30 minutes. Bolding has emerged this summer, and should get major minutes. Evans I think will get plenty of play as our future PG. It limits the hot hand to 20 minutes, and often as soon as someone gets hot, its time for a line change.         There were stretches last year when both Achara and James sat and Saunders was out most effective big man. Besides, Peggau will be nursing a knee and Milovic is 6-5. Neither will be in the opening day starting lineup. Saunders will also be coming off an injury, but I will bet he is ready to go. Theis will be the first big man off the bench. - Without a true center I think this squad would do well to run a somewhat similar system to the 10/40, but in a less regimented pattern. I think you'll see the run and gun pressing style out of the gates, with ebb and flow dictating the substitution pattern. It will be interesting to see how RE plays it, but I think he has used these last two seasons as a sort of experimental stepping stone. One of my roommates at DU was a walk-on. The walk-ons in my day, just as today, could all eat my lunch on the court. Game Report - My son and I arrived too early, thought the first game was at 6:00, no, it was at 7:00. There was no one in the gym so I started shooting around. Was joined by a tall slender young man. Jimmy, Kieron and Jason played in game 1. Jason hit a tre (maybe 2) and played well on D. Jimmy had some superb slashes to the whole also great D. Kieron was awesome. No one on the other team was over 6'8". He had at least 5 blocks in the first half. That other team had Rouff and three other Mountaineers. Kieron looks like he's really slimmed down..
Aaron, Theis teamed in Game 2. Eric Evans and BJ Montiero were on the opposite side. Play of the game. Aaron streaks across the baseline to grab an offensive rebound, comes out the other side, whirls and nails a 15 footer. His drives were, again, phenomenal. (The Pitt fans around us loved him btw). Theis solid on the boards. Montiero is a leaper, great position on the boards, didn't really shoot from outside. Evans very quick at the point. Took a few outside shots but his forte is ball handling and dishing. Chatted with Aaron after the game. Always smiling...
Alex, Shawntez, Lucas and Melquan teamed in Game 3. We left at the half but Shawntez already had 8 points including a thundering drive the lane dunk. He guarded the DeJuan Blair, forced a missed shot on DeJuan but by then Blair had scored 16 of his team's first 18 points. Melquan and Montiero are very similar but Melquan does not hesitate to put it up from outside. Reminds me of a Mitchell in the raw but one that plays D. Alex again was not in the flow but that will come. He played strong on the boards.

Talked to Coach Everhart last night and they freshmen attended the Pirates game part of the University Spiritian program. Agree that Alex is in the 6-5/6-6 range, instead of listed height of 6-7. Was pleased to see Jimmy Sherwood taking it to Pitt player Wannamaker. Wannamaker could not containn Sherwood all night, the majority of times fouling him on his drives. Sherwood also, had some nice blocks on the defensive end.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with praising and rooting for walk-ons like Sherwood and Duty .         Please don't misunderstand -- the Patriot League schools are all, in my opinion, outstanding schools. I have nothing but respect for them and the conference itself. But DU didn't help create the ECBL (the forerunner to the A-10 and its forerunner, the Eastern Eight) for academics, it did so for basketball. Dave Ricketts, a member of Duquesne's 1955 national championship team, has passed away at age 73.

Steve Blass just called him "the best major league coach I've ever been around."

Dave, like his brother Dick, played major league baseball and later coached in the Cardinals organization for many years.

I had an encounter with Dave Ricketts years ago at Three Rivers Stadium. I was sitting in the centerfield seats with three friends of mine on a weeknight when the Bucs were playing the Cards and less the 10,000 people were in the stands. Andy Van Slyke hit a home run to right field which landed between the home run fence and the stadium wall. A few moments later here comes Dave Ricketts. He had gotten up from his seat in the Cards bullpen down the right field foul line and retrieved the home run ball. He calls out, "Here you go," to my friend Betsy who was seated next to the siderailing and tossed the ball up to her. And as fate would have it Betsy was a maniacal Van Slyke fan who couldn't believe her good fortune. But that was just Dave Ricketts being Dave Ricketts.

A couple basketball notes ... WOMEN'S BASKETBALL.

The Duchesses have named former player Carmen Bruce as an assistant basketball coach. Us old guys remember Carmen's dad Kirk as a former (E-S-)Pitt player.

Former Duchesses coach Dan Durkin was named an assistant at Temple (women's team). Best of luck to him. He brought the single best basketball player of the Colleary Era, Korie Hlede, to the Bluff (sorry Mike James and Wayne Smith).

Dan will end up with another head coaching gig soon.

While he did post 5 or 6 winning seasons, he couldn't get the Duchesses in the NIT, NCAA or even the A-10 finals. Only Aaron, Duty, Sherwood and Milovic showed tonight for the Dukes. Kieron Achara also played in the second game.

In the first game Aaron had 8 points and had 10 in the second game of the night. He had the task of guarding Levance Fields in the first game and more than held his own.

Sherwood led all the Dukes with 18 points(unofficial). He was successful in getting to the basket all night.

Duty knocked down a couple of shots and plays solid defense when there really is none in the league.

Milovic really didn't see the ball because Tyrell Biggs of Pitt would try to go one on one every time he touched the ball. Aleks didn't have any points by my count.

Kieron looked good going up against Dwight Miller and Biggs from Pitt, and actually blocked maybe 4-6 shots and had 6 points.

Ron was there tonight and was mingling with some fans. I hope some other posters can make it out over the next couple of weeks, it's really worth your while.

Hello all and again, my deepest gratitude to all for the support at the Pro AM League this summer.

I received a e-mail from the Greentree Sportsplex and the Greentree Police concerning parking at the venue that I wanted to share with all that reads as follows:

For all fans that will be attending the Pro AM basketball event at the Greentree SportsPlex on Monday and Wednesday nights please be aware Greentree Police will monitor the parking lots during these busy times. Parking along Iron City drive is strictly prohibited.

If there are no empty parking spots located at the SportsPlex, fans will be allowed to park in the Vision Financial parking lot, as well as the Radisson Parking lot, which is located next to the bubble entrance, and walk up the steps.

The Greentree Police will tag, ticket, and tow any violators parking along Iron City Drive.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

Some Fordham employees from the Bronx told me of a plan to rennovate the basketball arena. Rose Hill Gym will be rennovated ala St. Joseph's Alumni Gym. The arena's roof is to be raised and an upper deck is to be added over all four sides. Struts to support the second decking will be slanted and most likely anchored outside the present walls. No word on when this is to begin, or what it will cost.

Pittsburgh Pro-am Number 3 -- BJH, Wednesday, July 02, 11:29:33pm
Tonight marked my first look at Aleks Milovic, and I was impressed. In limited minutes(bad coaching), Aleks was 4-5 from beyond the arc, and hung with Young from Pitt.

Shawntez Patterson knocked down 7 triples and was active on the glass.

B.J. Monteiro was very good defensively and chipped in a bit on offense.

Eric Evans played the point well for his team, when the coach took him out the team was lost.

Chase Robinson played a bit and made some nice drives but didn't finish.

AJAX,and Sherwood each played in two games and looked good.

No Bolding tonight, but seeing him last week he can clearly hang with the big boys.
