I REALLY like this one and thought that many of you here would as well. After all, as the hardcore DU alums and students, we should know the fight song.

On the other hand, in every single version that I've seen of any DU spirit song, it has never been "grand ole red and blue," I've only seen the world "old." This includes the 1934 publication that I purchased via e-bay as well as the song as it appears on the website. It also includes the more obscure "The Dukes of Duquesne" fight/drinking song. It also includes the "alma mater." So as much as I like the shirt, it really has nothing to do with the fight song or any other school song simply because of the one letter.

On a related note, here are the DU songs that I know about... does anyone know of any others that have been lost over the years? The Dukes of Duquesne is REALLY good; I'd love to see it put back into use!

  - Duquesne was Maquise de Duquesne, the Governor of New France, who established Fort Duquesne in 1858. Why Duquesne University is named after him I do not know-maybe because French Canadians are mostly Catholic. Many other places and things are named after him such as an incline, a City on the Monongahela, an executive club, a light company, a beer, a bridge, a boulevard, and an extinct ice arena. Seaking of JUCOS. Looks like Ron has an offer out to this 6'6" JUCO from Marshalltown CC acording to an article on Rivals. He wants to go to Iowa State but they heve not extended an offer yet. He is the #53 ranked JUCO by Rivals. SLU and Central Michigan have offered among others. Will is from Michigan. Not a true "big man" at 185 lbs, but looks like a stat stuffer in points, rebounds and assists. It may be an interesting Spring.

    - Personally, I suspect he'll test the waters without hiring an agent. If he isn't projected in the first round, I hope he'll be back next year. While many may not think he has much more to prove at the college level, I think they are wrong. If he works his a$$ off this summer and can develop an average to above average jump shot, I think he could end up a strong contender for national player of the year. He's a "tweener" body type whose jump-shooting and free-throw shooting are concerns at this point. Has anyone seen what GW is doing to the Smith Center? I realize that we don't have 30 million to throw around, or a ten million donor, but I hope that when Greg makes the decision that he does it right. We already have the power center so we don't have to be as exotic as the new smith center. GW has an arena of a similar size to us, so I am intrigued to see what we can do in response to them. 1. Bolding was one RB short of a double double. Again.
2. On the post game, Ray commented to RE that it looked like the weather might have helped them with preparations since there were ne distractions. RE replied that they didn't even talk about GW. They talked about the things they had to do to get better as a team. Looks like the kids were alright. Maybe they've turned the corner. We'll see in the next 2 games.

Does anybody here keep in touch with Jimmy Sherwood??? Reading the paper this morning, I saw that Arkansas-Monticello (who the Dukes beat in overtime) lost to Arkansas Tech (where Jimmy transferred) by 2 points. Looked it up and found out that Arkansas Tech is undefeated and #1 in the country in D-2. Obviously a pretty good team.

Then I checked Jimmy's stats. He is not playing much here; only played 5 minutes in mop up roles in the 8 conference games so far. I was wondering if he was hurt or if Arkansas Tech is that good (because I thought the Jimmy could put the ball in the bucket pretty darn well).

Since the cold start to conference play, I've been thinking about what's gone wrong to make this team what it is today after Ron's promising second and third year at Duquesne. My initial thought was that Aaron's play made everyone else better around him last year, and we are really missing that. But than I looked at the numbers and the only players really doing worse are Bill and Duty. We actually have 5 players averaging in double figures. After the Temple game, I looked at the bench scoring and our lack of "A-10 ready" depth has become apparent.

But how could this have happened given the quality and size of classes that Ron has brought in so far. My first reaction was that we are now paying for the turbulence we went through after the '07 and 08' seasons. As you look closer, it did not hurt as much as I thought it would've. If it weren't for the turnover we wouldn't have Saunders or Boulding and none of the players that left after '08 would contribute today. As I was dissecting the classes in my brain, it occurred to me that maybe Ron hasn't done as good a job recruiting as we thought. While he's done well finding some diamonds in the rough and being opportunistic to bring in some high end talent, reality has it that the majority of the players he has signed didn't fit, aren't producing or busted completely. In fact he's only hitting at about a 40-50% success rate. His first class was particularly disastrous The four year players would be seniors now and none of them stuck. Only two of the Juco's worked out, but they're long gone. I know what most of you are going to say. The program was at an all time low coming off a 3 win season, what should one expect. Well, I'm not expecting Sebastian Telfair but I'd have liked to hit at better than 17% of the players recruited that year. Had all the players from this class played their entire careers, we'd have gotten 32 individual seasons of potential eligibility. We got 7 good ones )2 from Reggie and 1 each from Mitchell, Grote, and James) and only 13 years of that eligibility were actually used. 2/3's of the second class have turned into contributors, but Theis hasn't even provided reasonable depth. In the third class, 3 of the 9 players have worked well, 2 haven't proven that they're A-10 players, 1 is not playing like a redshirt sophomore, and 2 are gone. While '08 still has time to prove itself, this class is on track to be another bust. I think both players from our most recent class have shown some great potential but do not have long enough resumes to be judged.

Now, I'm not trying to say that I dislike this team, but I think that we've got very little beyond our top 6 right now and that is just not going to cut it in the A-10. We need more depth and better recruiting from top to bottom not just at the top. We're not going to sustain success if only 40-50% of our players make it. Ron has no excuses moving forward.

We stay around .500 or better, we can then recruit on the promise that whatever specific recruit is going to be one of THE guys to get the team over the top. Call it "spin" or "putting lipstick on a pig"...whatever you want...but, here is one way of looking at the season:

Our RPI continues to hover in the low 100s, which is partially the result of having a top-40 Strength of Schedule. Looking at the schedule, we have had 8 games against top-50 RPI teams. We have lost them all. That's not good on the face, but 6 of those have been on the road; the only exceptions being Richmond (home) and Pitt (quasi-home).

Further looking at the schedule, against RPI-51+ teams we are 10-3 (including Ark-MC in that). With those losses again, two were on the road (@ W.Carolina and @ IUPUI). I submit that the only bad loss we have sustained all year (defined as a game we should have been projected to win but didn't) is the double-overtime loss at home to St.Louis. And, of course that was the game that Bolding only played 5 minutes because of strep throat.

We have 6 games left versus teams with 51 or better RPI. If we stay to form this year, we should go 5-1 in those games. Even if we lose to Dayton (at home) and Charlotte (road), we should still finish the year 16-14 overall and 7-9 in the A-10. That should be good enough to get us in the top 8 seeds and host a first round game against a team we should be able to beat. Then it's on to AC.

That's my take. Basically we scheduled a really tough schedule, with many difficult road games, and we lost our best playmaker on opening night. Based on that, we are probably right about where we should be, and our schedule gets easier from here on out. It starts tomorrow against GW though...

Ron sounded very down in the post-game interview. I think maybe he sees what appears to be pretty obvious. This program has taken a step back this year. While I didn't think we would beat Temple, especially away, it's pretty clear we are not even close to the top teams in this conference. What's worse is that we're barely competitive with the 2nd tier and 3rd tier teams. While we have some good players, we have too many players on this team that contribute nothing - nothing more than practice players.
What does the following tell you:
Richmond - maybe a little better team, we lose at home
Dayton - a better team, lose a close one away
St. Louis - a young team, about equal to us, we lose at home
Rhode Island - a better team, can't comptete at the end, lose away
St. Bonaventure - slight advantage to the Dukes, very lucky to win by 1 at home
Xavier - much better team, blowout loss
St. Joe's - maybe slight advantage to the Dukes, barely win at home
Temple- much better team, blowout loss
What else can you conclude but that we are a long way from being the program everybody wants us to be. And I don't think anybody thought that coming into this season.I have confidence Ron knows all this and that he knows what he needs to do, but I don't know if he has the flexibility to do everything he has to do. We need inside help badly. What can he do about it? If there's anything he can do, will he be able to do enough to give Damian Saunders the Senior season he deserves?

  - You need to give this Evans hatred a rest. Have you cosidered that maybe seniors are better than sophomores because they have more experience? With the expception of rebounding and FG% Ajax and Evans are very comparable during their 2nd sesons. Aaron scored 11 points in 31 minutes;Evans has 10.5 in 32. Aaron's assist to turnover ratio was 1.7, Evans is 1.3 (up from 1.1 earlier in the season). In terms of the raw assists, Aaron only averaged about .3 more a game than Evans does now.   - DC91, my issue is this: recruiting JUCO centers seems to be way more hit or miss than normal recruiting. Of the top 13, only two are getting 5 or more rpg, and there aren't any outside of Parakhouski getting 9+ ppg. I don't like my chances if we do recruit a true JUCO center. - Generally speaking, I'm anti Juco. They really don't add much to the long term success of the program and I'm not really sure how much they even add in the short run unless you get very lucky. There is a reason these guys JuCo in the first place, and it's not normally so they could stay close to home to help their sick grandmother. I think that certainly equates to more consideration than Aaric Murray. Who would you have on your 1st and 2nd teams? Who does Gaston bump? As for Damian, he was getting some press for Player of the Year earlier...he has dropped a bit but that is because of Damian. His teammates aren't taking those godawful threes for him, and his teammates aren't shooting free throws for him. Those count against him. He's a great player, but he's got some obvious flaws too. Parakhouski was referenced as a "big man from the College of Southern Idaho" or words to that effect in a P-G story at the time. Either one might have been enough to put us past Temple and into the NCAAs last year. I like the thinking, but I think it's easier said than done to get such a player. While, there could be some dramatic transformation in the three bigs we have, at this point they have not shown they are A10 players.       - BTW, my job description for the kind of player we need is a 6'7" to 6'9" athletic quick jumper, and is someone who is strong enough not to get pushed around in the block (225 to 235 lbs). Does not have to give us a lot of points, but with enough skill to pick up garbage put back points. Most importantly is a good defender. I pointed out Lett, because he was an unheralded player, who while not great, was a godsend for Pitt, as they went from a season very much like last year for us, to 29-5 and the Sweet 16, and he was effective in his first year, averaging 8.5 points, and 4.6 boards a game, and shooting 57% in only 18 minutes a game. Question regarding the Red Ring.....before home games, how busy is it there? Is it easy to get a table and something to eat before the game? I havent been there yet, and am meeting people before the UMass game. - It is pretty crowded before games but the staff does a good job of getting people in and out. Allow up to 30 minutes to get a table but I have never had to wait longer than that. Check the schedule for Pens game though because the Pens crowd goes there as well. - Slim, I have to disagree with you on this one. Yes, you can get a table pretty easily on non-Pens nights (there is no Pens game on 2/11). But the management at this place is horrible; the servers try their best, but the overall service ranges from slow to non-existent. The food quality is mixed. - Not sure if this place is still going, but was a good place when I lived in Pittsburgh. After work at Duquesne I used to go to a steakhouse called "The Flame". It had a big window and you could see the steaks cooking on a charcoal grill. The service was very fast. Not sure where it was, but I think it was near the Jenkins Arcade.
