- This changes my whole philosophy on Juco's. We'd be replacing one junior with another, so bring on a guy who can play both guard positions. But what do we do with the other scholarship? Hold it for a player released from his scholarship at a bigger program? Target a position? Take the best high school/ prep player we can get to sign reguardless of where he plays? - We will certainly sign a point guard in the spring - I'm betting it is someone the majority of the board does not expect. Marhold is a player I suspect he'll get minutes. Wouldn't be shocked if a transfer appears ( released from "Overbooking" ) or a player who shines in the spring AAU season and has fallen thru the cracks. RE has connections virtually EVERYWHERE - and will use them if needed. Teams rarely "Hold" the schollie if a player is available for fear of getting caught short - they reason, lets's worry about this season and worry about next year when the time comes. - Just to follow on CLK's point, it seemed rather evident these two would be leaving since Barton's comments the last RE radio show. In that interview with Ray he specifically mentioned as contributors next year all players but 3. Barton was conspiculously silent re the 2 named above plus Robinson.     - yeah, i would think he mentioned robinson as when he played, i know he played little, he did well, what about milovic? he played almost as little as patterson, and i saw nothing from him in the moments he had a chance to play that showed his is indeed a knock down shooter as RE described, even in warmups he wasnt hitting shots consistently. It must've been a difficult year for him because not only was he learning about basketball at the NCAA level, he was learning a new culture.       - You are right Milovich did not show anything during his limited PT, but I think we can all agree he has a Division I body. - Predictable. At times Theis was the best player on the court for the other team. We were in desperate need for size, and as bad as Theis was, 2 other 6�7� players never played, so I wondered to myself how bad they must have been. I am not hating, just saying. (I stole that). Sometimes recruits are misjudged and they are better off, if they want to play competitively, being at a school or level that better suits their talent. I wish everybody luck.     - It's my understanding that when a coach signs a long term employment contact, the school has no obligation to let him out of it prior to end of the term because he got a better offer from another school, unless there were specific provisions allowing for this. Colleges seem to let their coaches out of the contracts automatically because they fear that the retained coach will be resentful if forced to stay and actually live up to his signed agreement.         Also, while I'm not sure about the other pro leagues, the NFL prohibits teams from preventing assistant coaches from taking a promotion with another team.     - Coaches are hired to be fired. If a coach isn't doing well, he's fired, whatever the terms of his contract. From an employer's point of view, an early buy-out is the only thing that makes sense. If a coach is happy (money, program, family, whatever), then he stays. If not , he moves on. Don Donaher at Dayton is a prime example. After giving so much, he was canned by Dayton. That's just the way it is. So if one of DU's coaches wants to move on, so be it. All good questions. Here's my take:

Peggau's health is a major concern./// Yes but by all accounts he will be fine.
Is Williams any good?///He's got the physique, that's for sure. All he has to do is even up the rebounding disparity and keep guys like Olmos from turning the game into a low blocks clinic. It also means Saunders will shut down the team's best forward and Clark should stay out of foul trouble.

Who is going to get better over the summer?///Best question. I think Monteiro has the biggest upside, Duty the lowest, only because he's done more than anyone thought already. Lewinson is another guy who looks like he has some potential.

Can Evans be a leader?///Yep. Was in HS. Isn't afraid to have the ball in his hands at the end of the game.

Who is going to replace Aaron's leadership and will that person be effective?/// This will be a team effort.

Will we schedule correctly to have a shot at the dance?//Better question - will the team get to 20 regular season wins? If that happens schedule is (almost) irrelevant.

How will the new recruits fit in? Doesn't matter - their contribution is not needed, but would be appreciated...

Are we going back to the full court frenzy ball?/// Could be. Another question would be will we see more trapping with Saunders at one end and Williams at the other? Also, how about a little 1-3-1 with Bolding out front, Williams and his monster wingspan in the middle flanked by two of the better defensive players in the league in Saunders and Clark with Evans underneath.

Just my own thoughts, but Ollie seems to lack good hands and feet and certainly has no quickness. And he plays with little or no confidence on offense. However he appears to be strong. If he has any upside it will result from his strength and more offensive confidence under the rim. These should get better with maturity and experience, so there is some upside.         I agree that he has a role to play. Just how big a role depends on how he matures and develops. Never have seen a bigger heart than AJ's dressed in Red n Blue. AJ took a bunch of Frosh, Sophs and a walk-on to a place not seen on the bluff in 30 + years that don't think the others could match. Therefore, will humbly stick to my guns on this one and place AJ in the company of Si and Nixon and possibly Coop.         I saw Norm Nixon play, and he was that good for 3 + years. But remember Norm came into a great program that had been to the final four just 3 years before he signed with Duquesne. He got alot of notice and played on some good teams early that helped him look better than Ajax, who on the other hand took a chance of coming to a losing program with just a chance it might turn around.         First of all, the Dukes haven't been to the Final 4 since 1940. They made the round of 16, five years before Norm came. Norm never played on a good team the whole time he was here, and he got no attention outside of Pittsburgh. Red Manning couldn't even get him an invite to the Olympic trials. Norm played on one winning team at Duquesne, 14-11 his sophomore year. The other records were; 12-12 (74), 12-13 (76), 15-15 (77).         My mistake on how far the Dukes made it in the NCAA in 69, but my point was, Nixon was recruited to a winning program. In 69(21-5); in70(17-7); 71(21-4); 72(20-5). And you're right, Nixon played on teams that played 500 ball, yet got drafted by the Lakers. Aaron did a great job on an undersize team, but because of Duquesne's 20 years of losing, he may not get the looks in the draft that Nixon got. I hope he gets a shot at the NBA, he worked hard, stuck with us, didn't leave after his fr. year, worked hard, thrived in a rebuilding year, led the Dukes to the A-10 finals, he'll be remembered.         Trust me, Aaron is on the NBA's radar, and as a long time fan, I appreciate all he's done for the program. I just think some folks are getting carried away. Dick Ricketts was a two time All American, and he's being dismissed like he was some kind of bum.         C'mon '81. They're just being fans. This is the fist time in a long time (and for some fans and students EVER) that a DU basketball fan could actually get a little carried away with stuff. Keeping the nucleus of Saunders, Clark, Bolding, Evans, Peggau, Monteiro together the next two years and having the right complementary pieces (e.g., a big man and another reliable PG) will keep us dancing the next two years, Let's enjoy the ride! The NCAA is cracking down on Facebook users who are using a social medium to try to entice recruits. Click here Yet Jim Calhoun is still out there, having admitted to recruiting violations, and nothing is being done about it.

We all know there's a double standard. I just want to know how the NCAA has the resources to scour the Internet looking for needles in a haystack, but never seems to read the big headlines when someone like Calhoun gets caught in the dirt.

- He had surgery and it's very early in his recovery. I doubt that we'll know anything until June. If he is doing well, I suspect he'll be a big factor in the fall. I'm sitting here thinking about next year's Dukes and believing 20 wins during the regular season, a legitimate shot at winning the A-10 tournament, and a return trip to the NIT are minimum expectations. Winning the regular season and the A-10 tournament and a shot at the "Big Dance" are the upside.

This is the place to be, huh?

Having had the privilege to watch and study Ron Everhart the past three seasons, my guess is that when we tip off the season the starting five will be Saunders, Clark, Bolding, Duty and Evans, and the non-con schedule will give us a chance to take long looks at Rodrigo Peggau, Morakinyo Williams and a seasoned Ollie Lewinson up front and BJ Monteiro and possibly Chase Robinson in the backcourt.

Plus whoever signs this spring (Marhold, etc.).

As the season progresses I can see either Peggau or Williams bumping Duty to the bench to start some games, but Duty will still get his share of PT. But I can't see Saunders, Clark, Bolding or Evans sitting at the outset or end of any games (assuming Billy stays out of foul trouble). Saunders may be the A-10's best defender next year, and an all-conference player. I think Bolding, Evans and Duty will form one of the best backcourt combinations in the conference.

I don't see the Dukes running away and hiding atop the A-10, but I predict a slight power shift starting to emerge. X (new coach) and Temple (minus Christmas) will not be as good, although both will probably win 17-20 games. Dayton, URI, St. Joe's will stick around. I think LaSalle and Richmond will rise a little, and St. Louis, Charlotte, St. Bonaventure, and UMass will be mediocre. GWU and Fordham will bring up the rear.

But I'm excited. I think the schedule will have some tougher games and I would love to see the Dukes visit the Lehigh Valley early in the year (anything but a Wednesday night). I see us beating either WVU (more likely) or Pitt. Would love to get both of those.

And I hope we can keep the conversation going all summer.

Officer Sciullo grew up in Bloomfield, attended the former St. Joseph School and excelled in hockey and golf at Central Catholic High School.

Despite being relatively small, he stood out on the ice, making all-star teams in his junior and senior seasons and going on to play hockey at Duquesne University.

"He was one of the tiniest kids we had as a freshman. But he had the ability to score," said Kevin Zielmanski, a teammate and close friend who went on to coach hockey at Central Catholic and, currently, at Bishop Canevin High School.

He said Officer Sciullo also enjoyed golf and after college took a stab at playing professional golf. In 1993, while playing for Duquesne, he was medalist in a tournament hosted by St. Bonaventure University, shooting a 72.

"He liked to play golf and be with friends. He was always joking and having fun. He was a good guy, just a guy from the neighborhood.

"Obviously by choosing to be a police officer he was someone who wanted to help," Mr. Zielmanski said. "He told me he really enjoyed being an officer. He didn't want a desk job. He enjoyed being out in the patrol car."

Officers Sciullo and Mayhle were "young, energetic," said Sgt. Eric Holmes, a supervisor at Zone 5.

"They were always early, ready to start their shift," said Sgt. Holmes, who also taught both officers in an ethics class at the city's police academy. "They just loved being cops."

Miller told Arizona he would remain at Xavier late last night, then asked for a chance to sleep on the decision. After going back and forth during the morning, a source said, he informed XU athletic director Mike Bobinski of his decision at noon ET.

Miller could not immediately be reached for comment. A message left for Xavier officials has not been immediately returned.

Miller led Xavier to two Elite Eights and a Sweet 16 over five seasons. His overall record 120-47. He had met with UA officials Sunday in Santa Fe, N.M. and flown back to Cincinnati to make his final decision.

So, I was in Detroit for the FInal Four(huge UNC fan as well as a duquesne fan) and got to meet by chance our arch nemesis Jimmy Baron(the player not coach) from Rhode Island. The kid is a total class act. I went up to him, shook his hand, and said, Jimmy, I am a Duquesne fan and there is no one else in the A-10 that I would rather see graduate than you. You're killing us! ( I said it with a smile). We then talked about him and AJAX at prep school and both of them getting ready for the Portsmouth Invit. He was a really nice and funny kid and I wish him well.

- Not a surprise to nay URI fan. Jimmy is a class act on and off the court. It has not been easy on him being the coach's son. He and his father have had a strained relationship these last 4 years and his mom has had to be the mediator (see Thamel article in NY Times). He however never aired things in public. Coach Jim Baron never gave Jimmy any praise and credit until the last week of his career. I hope that is a trend that begins to take shape amongst some of the smaller conference schools with big programs. While Arizona could offer more money and the Pac-10, the situation over there at this time is terrible with 3 years of recruiting lost. It's not worth the risk. Now, if someone retires at a really good program and they want Miller I cannot blame him for going. But this goes to show that if we continue to win and get RE a salary that is competitive in this league, he may not bolt for something just because it's in a BCS league...or at least I hope. That having been said, if WVU or VaTech opens up and they want RE, he is gone. Those are the only 2 jobs I completely fear.

Just heard that Fordham's best player, Jio Fontan is leaving. I also heard that his leaving is just the tip of the iceberg. Many other players are going to transfer. Too bad, the A-10 needs a strong anchor in the New York area.
