The Marhold eye surgery didn't receive much play here on this board; but it could play a big part in the future success of the team. Jalen Ragland (6'5/2011) of Chillicothe listed UTEP, Duquesne, Tulane, and Wright State as his favorites in that order.

Ragland told us those are his top four at this time, but he is still "pretty much open" in case others decide to call.

Ragland will take a visit to UTEP next weekend and he will be on an official to Duquesne (September 10 and 11).

The above is from the Ohio Hoops website. It was mentioned elsewhere on the site that he has an "Offer."

- Belma Nuric of Baldwin High has already verbally commitee to go to Duquesne in 2011. She & Madison Cable were first team AAAA all-state this past season, and they both play on the same AAU team. Let's hope that playing for a hometown university attended by both her mom & dad will sway Madison's college decision. These two girls coupled with the recruits who will be freshmen this season, 6-3 wing Orsi Szecsi, (Budapest, Hungary/Oak Hill (Va.)     - Frankly, if you have the #57th ranked high school senior sitting in your back yard (Mt Lebanon), you don't necessarily need to go to California or Arizona to get a player. However, I do believe that you will see a wider geographic distribution of recruits for 2011 than we have ever seen before. Susie did say that when she was 1st hired, she would attempt to lock in the cream of thr crop in western PA, which is generally regarded as a pretty good area for D-1 girls' talent.       - Good points. I think Suzie has a different challenge trying to compete on a national or international than Ron does. High school boys know more about the NCAA men's scene than the girls do, largely because of the high level of exposure given to men's sports. So Suzie trying to talk to girls from Paterson Catholic in NJ, or a school in Indiana, is a little tougher until Duquesne gets a higher profile. This includes: Anthony Dallier, Tyler Scott, Barnett Harris, and Stefan Jankovic. They have also
expressed interest in Highlands guard, Micah Mason.

- When I lived in Pittsburgh the best area players could be found in Uniontown, McKeesport, Aliquipa, Farrell, Midland, Clairton, and New Kensington, cities in the river valleys. Also, 5th Avenue and Perry had good players in Pittsburgh. I know there was a big realignment of the WPIAL in 1980 and that the river valleys have lost their industry. The selection of Greg Gattusso into Duquesne's athletic hall of fame is a no-brainer. Man had the best record in the history of the sport at DU, and along with Dan McCann and Elmer Layden will always rate as one of the best and most memorable.

The selection of a prominent booster to the HOF is what I'd like to kick around. And please, let me preface this discussion by saying that this is not meant to disparage the gentleman who has been selected this year, or anyone who has been selected in past years. What I want to kick around is the notion of electing non-athletes and non-coaches into an athletic HOF.

I'll start the discussion by saying two things:

1. I think there are other ways for the athletic department to recognize donors than to elect them into the hall. You can, for example, name something on one of our facilities for them. You can set up a separate plaque or wall of honor with the names of all of our significant boosters. In other words, I think their contributions should be acknowledged, but separately from the coaches and athletes.

2. There are a number of deserving athletes who should be well-qualified who haven't been elected to the HOF. I've taken the time to nominate a couple, and based on their achievements as athletes, I'm perplexed by the fact that they haven't gotten in. Now, when you add to that the fact that several boosters have gotten in during the past couple of years, it just seems to be a bit unfair.

Again, I'm not knocking anyone and I am appreciative that these boosters have supported the University and the Dukes.

Your thoughts?

- Agree, aside from Mossie and Palumbo and Goss. I would've wished the booster had graciously declined knowing that the HOF intentions are to highlight exceptional athletes. I'd go along with a designated 'Morreale Lounge' or another appropriate naming right area. Not meaning to rain on his parade because I am sure he is not the average booster. I am a Duquesne basketball fan. Have been for years. I've seen the Dukes in better days, when the NCAA Tournament was an expectation for the program, and the NIT was a good place to hang out hat when times were tough.

Then along came a couple bumps in the road, and the next thing I know, my Dukes are locked in a death spiral. Coaches come and go. Players come and go. Sometimes good players, but somehow never enough.

Next thing I know, the Dukes hit rock bottom. Winning becomes like a solar eclipse. Rare, and hard to watch anyway.

Now I'm thinking there's no way out of this. No coach can come in here and change this program. It's the George Costanza of college basketball, a loser, and not a loveable one. It longs to be seen with Angelina Jolie, even though it couldn't buy a date with Ugly Betty, or Murphy Brown (who names a girl "Ugly" or "Murphy," anyway?)

But still, I dream. After all, when Danny Nee was here, a turnaround was always only a year away. Big man signed on the dotted line. A backup JV guy at LeBron's school. A benchwarmer at a better program. They were out there. Never mind that the big man was coming off a free agency year in Spain, or whatever. We signed him and maybe the NCAA won't notice. Then it's goodbye Ugly and Murphy and hello Angelina.

Along comes the new regime. Greg Amodio - curse him, he messed with the pep band - and Ron Everhart. After one losing season, things have turned around. Three consecutive seasons of .500 ball or better. Big time players, like Shawn James and Damian Saunders. Suddenly the Dukes can play with almost anyone. No more laughing stock.

And best of all, no more Ugly and Murphy.

Instead, Ron has set me up with ... wait, is that Jennifer Aniston? I mean, she's OK and everything, but she ain't no Angelina Jolie. Or Megan Fox.

Oh, woe is me.

Everhart can't bring me frickin' Angelina Jolie.

I'll just do what I do best. Whine, b*tch, complain.

Tear down the new recruits.

Act like I'm being cheated.

They did take away the men's swimming team, after all.

Never mind that Everhart busted his hump to try to get the most prized big man in the nation, only to have Blob Thuggins steal him away. At a time when every freaking major program in the country was after him.

All I got was some hotshot kid who's only here because his aunt is a coach, and some guys from Michigan (where is that, South America?), and now some kid from New York who just can't be that good because he's coming here.

And he's probably an emotional train wreck, you know, because most teenagers are smart, like the guys on "Big Bang Theory." NEVER MIND THAT I SCREAMED FOR YEARS THAT WE NEED TO RECRUIT KIDS FROM THE CITY!!!

No, I am a Duquesne basketball fan. I'm frickin' stuck with Jennifer Aniston. Can you imagine that? Let me go on that message board and whine some more. After all, I am the only one making a real contribution to this program.

ESPN has a great new article on the Pirates. It seems it has leaked out that the Pirates made 29.4 million dollars in 2007 and 2008. The General Manager states that the Pirates are in the middle of their long range plan to become winners. The Pirates just signed a 16 year old kid from Mexico named Luis Heredia. He could be the best Pirate pitcher from Mexico since Diomedes Olivo (who was actually Dominican). Also, the Pirates have built a big baseball academy in the Dominican Republic which is expected to pay dividends down the road. Good article!

Joel Wright, Air Jamaica, has to be the most confusing person I've read about.
Apparently he attended Thomas Jefferson HS through his junior year (23 pts,17 rbs). He committed to Fordham during that period of time. He later decommitted and then committed to Manhattan. In order to raise his grades, he transfered to Central Carolina Sports Academy. The YouTube video against Quality Education was in fact from Dec '09 but posted as 3/10 because apparently the program folded at mid year. He then transfered to Central Jersy Each One Teach One which from their website appears to be some kind of glorified AAU program. The Duquesne website however has Wright matriculating from New Brittain Academy.
Talk about the circuitous route.

My buddy duq81 is not going to like this, but now that the roster is set I see Ron going with the two platoon system again to start the season, much like he did last season in the first half of the games. The difference is there is more talent and way more speed & quickness than he had last year. There are various combinations he can use. He will most likely split the "starters" on the two team, but I think it would be fun at some point to see the five freshman on the floor together. I know we still lack the coveted big man, unless Martin turns out to be him, but I believe this team is going to be exciting to watch. Any thoughts?

  - Slim, you could be right, but I think we could go 10 or 11 deep. We still have the issue of bering undersized. Ron's answer in past years has been to speed up the game. I really see him putting the pedal to the metal this year as he has the horses to run. It could be the platoon, or just wholesale substitutions like Dayton used last year. It may only be for half of the game before he limits his rotation like last year, but maybe longer as he won't have to use walk ons.
