  One of the first beats I covered for the Post-Gazette was Duquesne basketball, which then called the arena home, in the tortured sense that 650 people sitting around a 17,000-seat facility is in some way homey. The home-court advantage in that era must have been that any five people selected randomly from the 650 had as good a chance to win as the student-athletes available.

    • Alan, I think you mentioned your era at one time or another but I can't remember. Were you around for the inception of the ECBL/EAA? Arena crowds were admittedly small (@3,300 per game), but there were plenty of instances when the placed would be filled - and positively electric. The DU-Pitt NIT game at the Arena, in my mind, rivaled any major, hoop crazy venue you can name. I clearly did not see what happened after I graduated in 1980, but for a couple years the team was at least competitive and there were still some great games played there.   • Frankly I'm not sure I put too much merit in the directionaly challenged Collier's memories of significant events at the Arena. Sounds like he had to get a column done and threw this piece together in about 15 minutes without actually doing some homework by checking Duquesne's attendance records. From the way he talked about being so confused in finding his way around the arena, it's a wonder he ever found the basketball court when he covered the Dukes.   • Gene is very old and also from Philly so he should be forgiven for memory lapses; and lack of knowledge regarding Duquesne hoops. I was at almost every game in that era at the Arena and the crowds were not as small as 650; unless there was a blizzard etc. He is also wrong about the quality of play; these teams were at least competitive and many of them were pretty good. The Dukes were above average in the league and Satalin had some talent ( Dobbs, Suder, Sellers; C. Adams etc) until the rape allegations destroyed a potential A-10 champion. The "student athlete" barely spent two semesters at Kentucky before turning professional, and their worried about if he got a C instead of an A in a night class in high school. • WOMEN'S NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED. Ohio State (A), Vanderbuilt (H), Lehigh (H), WVU (A): all had final RPIs below 72 last season. Only 6 home games out of a 15 non-conference game schedule. The women's team concludes its non-conference schedule with Pitt on Jan 5, 2011, at the Palumbo. This will be one difficult schedule.       • That brings back memories of Mickey at the Arena, feeding the "Jewel" with crisp passes and scoring and rebounding against top flight teams. I was saddened when he quit school and went to the Pipers in the ABA. While he was with the Bucks he had a nice, but short career. On my second day ever on campus, I foolishly got myself into a pickup game on the little court by the music school that was literally a "cage". At one point, I was left wide open and tried a shot from the corner. Mickey Davis took about two strides from the opposite corner and swatted it out of the cage.   Villanova football considering joining Big East

  IF VILLANOVA WANTS its football program to move up from the Football Championship Subdivision level to join the Big East, all the university has to do is say yes.
  
  The Daily News has learned that the Big East, one of six BCS conferences, has asked the Wildcats to make the jump.
  
  And the school is officially considering the offer.
  
  "The Big East very recently communicated its interest in adding Villanova as a football member," Villanova athletic director Vince Nicastro told the Daily News yesterday. "As a result, we have decided to embark on an in-depth evaluation of this opportunity.
  
  "As you might suspect, this is a complex issue, which entails many dimensions - both quantitative and qualitative. While we will move forward on this as quickly as possible, it is critical that all of those dimensions are vetted thoroughly prior to making any final decision."
  
  The Big East, through a spokesperson, opted not to comment. But conference sources confirmed Nicastro's statement. Sources added that while no formal proposal has been made, if Villanova says yes, it will become a reality.
  
  Villanova, which has informally looked at the many factors involved for about a year, will now officially start the due-diligence process.
  
  No timetable for a decision has been set. Sources said that in a best-case scenario, the Big East would like to have an answer by the end of the year. The conference presidents hold their annual meeting in November, and aren't scheduled to meet again until March. The Big Ten has its meetings in December, at which point it is expected to discuss additional expansion. The names of Big East teams reportedly have come up in past talks about the Big Ten.
  
  From Villanova's standpoint, the discussion next proceeds to a committee composed of Board of Trustees members. The committee will conduct a study and present a recommendation to that 32-member governing body before a vote is taken. Whether that can be done by the end of the year remains unclear.
  
  The Big East would like, for practical purposes, to add a ninth football team. Having eight teams means each team must schedule five nonconference games, which isn't always easy. And four of them play only three conference home games each season. Again, not preferable.
  
  Villanova, which won its first FCS national football championship last year and is ranked No. 2 this season, following last week's 31-24 loss to Temple, has been a Big East member for every other sport since 1980-81, the conference's second year of existence.
  
  'Nova played football at what was then called the Division I-A level until 1980, before the program was disbanded. It resurfaced 5 years later at I-AA. In 1997, Villanova and Connecticut were given the opening to join the Big East for football. Villanova turned it down, but UConn accepted. The biggest considerations for declining at that time were the increased financial commitment and lack of an adequate on-campus facility.
  
  Maybe the times have changed. College athletics certainly have changed, with many schools switching conferences.
  
  "I do think people are much more aware, especially of what happened this summer, of the changing landscape of college athletics, than they were 15 years ago," Nicastro said. "They sort of knew it was out there, but now it's real. Conferences are realigning, schools that have traditionally been in conferences for many, many years have shifted affiliations. Things nobody thought would happen have happened.
  
  "And the conventional wisdom is they'll continue to happen."
  
  If Villanova elects to move up, it likely would play one more season at FCS, followed by a mandatory 2-year provisional period. So the Wildcats wouldn't gain full-time status in the larger Football Bowl Subdivision until 2014.
  
  Where Villanova would play is an issue. Temple calls Lincoln Financial Field home. Sources said that makes it unlikely Villanova also would play there. Villanova Stadium has a capacity of 12,000, and the prospect of enlarging it apparently is not feasible. The NCAA requires 15,000 in actual or paid attendance for all home games for FBS schools. The attendance requirement must be met in 1 year over a 2-year period.
  
  A viable venue is the new PPL Park in Chester, which holds 18,500 for Union soccer games. And there is room for a few thousand portable seats, as well as a potential for more permanent additions.
  
  Other possibilities could include Franklin Field, and maybe even Citizens Bank Park (at least in November), now that Yankee Stadium and Wrigley Field are being used for college football.
  
  Temple was a football-only member of the Big East from 1991 until the conference ended the affiliation after the 2004 season.
  
  The Owls, who are in the Atlantic 10 for all other sports, have played football in the Mid-American Conference since 2007.
  
  To compete on a higher level, Villanova knows it would have to upgrade its infrastructure (weight rooms, practice fields, etc.). It also would need to fund 22 more football scholarships, and as many additional women's scholarships to comply with Title IX. The opportunities to increase revenue also would be much greater.
  
  To help offset Villanova's transition costs, sources said one way the Big East could help is to schedule home games against the Wildcats that would include guaranteed payouts.
  
  Villanova's basketball program is part of the equation regarding the football decision.
  
  If the Big East football schools ever went their separate ways, as many have projected, that would leave the Wildcats in the non-football half of the 16-team conference. That means Villanova would lose basketball opponents Connecticut, Syracuse, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Louisville, Cincinnati and South Florida.
  
  With Villanova's renewed national basketball profile, it would be important for the school to protect its brand and the football program could help.
  
  The process to decide whether to play big-time football figures to be complicated for Villanova. At the same time, it could be a simple yes or no. Either way, the ramifications could be profound. *

As far as getting back in a snow storm it is pretty hard to fly when the planes are grounded. That is why Ron took the bus back from DC during that horrible snow storm. I would think sometimes logistics play in travel plans, like the trip to Canada. Easier to bus and haul equipment around when playing in various locations. If they have to fly commercial, they can't fly out after night games - in many cases, they would not arrive until afternoon the next day, missing classes. The only rule that I'm aware of is that you can't play in the same exempt tourney for 5 years, so the Dukes can't be invited back to the CBE for 4 more years. This change of the exempt rule has hurt teams like the Dukes;because now larger BCS schools can play every year in some exempt tourney. • Studying the OCC schedule -- CLK, Thursday, September 09, 12:52:14pm
  Assuming we start with Bluefield State, I think we win the first four games with Bluefield, at RMU, at Bowling Green,and UMBC. The next three are road games at Pitt, at PSU and at Green Bay, and then WVU at the Consol. This is the hardest stretch. Optimistic guy that I am, I think we can win all three road games but to be realistic maybe we win one. I would be very surprised if we were able to beat WVU as they are loaded. Got to pencil that one in the L column. Although there could be a surprise with the balance of the OCC, I think we can run the table against IUPUI, George Mason, Northwestern State, Northfolk State, and at Houston Baptist. Therefore my best guess is that we will be 10-3 in the non coference, although it could be 9-4. Any other thoughts?

• A New Strategy to Get Local Press Coverage -- Marquis, Monday, September 06, 10:38:55am

  How in the world can the Duquesne Press Box be full (it was) and there still be no story of the Bucknell game in the local Sunday Papers? It was a beautiful opening game evening with a good crowd, Pitt had played earlier, a Patriot League opponent, the NEC is now a legitimate NCAA FCS Playoff Conference, with three radio broadcasts (one nationally) and neither the Press nor Trib had even a wire service summary. The Press had a nice picture of the Dukes swarming under the Bucknell QB for a loss so they were aware that there was a game, but not one word in print. There was more national and Bucknell media there than local and the field is within two miles of both papers offices.
  
  Robert Morris was covered. So was St. Francis, Cal. CMU, IUP, Edinboro, Westminster, St. Vincent, Grove City, Allegheny, Bethany, and Seton Hill, but a nationally recognized (Forbes and USN&WR)Tier I University with over 10,000 students right in the heart of the city playing a home game in a FCS, Division I Conference was not.
  
  The game didn't last that late so there was time to patch together wire service copies from out of town. Duquesne couldn't have played closer to the heart of Pittsburgh if they moved the game to Point Park.
  
  I advise playing the next home game on the roof of the Tribune Review Building or on the street outside the PG Building. Either that or move the entire university to some small town in northern West Virginia and change conferences to D-III to get an article in the "College Round-Up" section of the "local" press.

  MORGANTOWN - West Virginia basketball players Joe Mazzulla and Dalton Pepper were issued citations by Morgantown police early Sunday morning for conduct downtown.
  
  Mazzulla, a senior point guard, and Pepper, a sophomore shooting guard, were accused of disorderly conduct and public urination at around 12:30 a.m. near Chestnut and Reid Streets. Both have the option to contest the charge in municipal court Nov. 1 or to plead guilty and pay a fine.
  
  In a statement released through the sports information department, WVU Coach Bob Huggins said, "We are aware of the situation and the matter will be handled internally."
